For what it's worth, I went to the local grocery store's customer service for my money order. Western Union there only cost $1.00. It was worth 30c to me to NOT have to step foot in Walmart.
I know the feeling! Always told the girls that below the Walmart sign they need to hang, "Abandon all hope, ye who enter here".

Walmart. Ugh. In my area the local Walmart is next to the local Canadian Tire. A friend of mine says "I always shop at Canadian Tire instead of Walmart when I can, I prefer to support a Canadian business".

I shot back "oh, so you prefer cheap Canadian Chinese crap to cheap American Chinese crap..."

Don't periods go inside of quotations? Sorry this just keeps bugging me.

If that bothers you then there's plenty of other items on these forums to drive you nuts. Misuse of its and it's is one of my favorites. Or "break" instead of "brake." I could go on.

Depends on where you are from actually. US writing styles generally call for a period to go inside quotation marks, though other forms of punctuation often go outside unless they are specifically part of the quote (ex. exclamation points or question marks), or always go outside (such as semi-colons and colons).

However; England and other European countries, as well as many other parts of the world, call for periods to go outside quotation marks. As the post you are referring to came from a Canadian, it is entirely possible that he learned the British style instead of the American style.

I got mine. Yay. Bought 2 door modules with dealer card, and $499.31 cash on the other one. Money order trick.

I purchased the Volkswagen Mountain Bike and few knickknacks. Still have $180 in credit remaining. I own enough tee shirts for two more lifetimes. I too am trying to figure out a way to spend this balance. The car will not need it's first customer paid service until well after the credit expires in November.

Just return all that junk and spend the gift card on maintenance items that you'll need later down the road. Oil filters, fuel filters, air filters, cabin filters, wiper blades, oil, brake pads... etc.

Your future self will thank you.

Update:

After over a week since my goodwill/owner package issue and still no resolution. Apparently it's moved to "Level 2". Does anybody know what that really means?

Cant tell ya about level 2 but did remember reading a few weeks ago someone else had the same issue and it took a few weeks to be resolved but did end up getting the goodwill packages.

Went in (Napleton's, Urbana IL) for the 69L2 Clock Spring Recall and a brake flush today, and had my VISA cards validated. Took the service writer about 3 minutes to do it, after gave him my ID, registration, and the cards.
Bought supplies for the 40K service on the way out, total left on dealer card: $100. That was quick!

I registered for the goodwill package and they sent me the cards in my wife's name, since she was the purchaser when we bought the car. The problem is the car is actually registered in my name and VW will not authorize the cards unless the car registration and the card holder names are identical. So I had to re-register for the cards in my name and now I'm waiting another 6 to 8 weeks for new cards.

I also couldn't help but notice the cards expire next Jan. Shouldn't be too hard to use them up but I'll have to watch out for it. I wonder if the local dealer would install a third party stereo/GPS upgrade?

Depending on your mileage, it might be best to just get future maintenance items with the dealer card. Many people have suggested this of course.

I went with VW Keffer, their online pricing is some of the best in the country. I got a hybrid grille, and the rest in oil, oil filters, and fuel filters.

Yes, this is excellent advice. In my post #2634 above, I detail how I went in to the dealer, quickly validated my cards, and just as quickly managed to spend $400 of the $500 of the dealer card.

Supplies for the 40K Service (which I will be DIYing next month) = $300

Brake flush (due, as the car is pushing 3 years old = $100

I'm thinking the other $100 will probably go for more engine oil and filters.
As far as making the other (cash) VISA card liquid, it's easy to do as many suggested and just transform it into a money order, then deposit the MO in the checking account. No worries.

And with what things cost these days, how hard can it be?

I was fortunate to get a $500 money order for the "CASH" card.

And also fortunate to sell my $500 VW card here on TDICLUB to a member.

If I do the math on the "good will" results vs the purchase price it amounts to about 4.2% of additional savings

Can we by store gift cards with the $500 "anywhere" card? I'm planning to purchase an item worth more than $500 and I would expect the transaction to be declined as the value of the card is less than the item purchase price, and I assume the clerk can't split up the transaction

IMO the cash card is usable to the full amount of $500 -- then I see no reason why you couldn't pay extra $$$$ to get the rest of the purchase done

I bought just over the dealer card, at $527 worth of items. All you do is pay the difference. Most if not all Point of Sale systems are set up this way. Same for the other Visa card. I bought tires at Costco and paid the $76 difference with my debit card. I don't understand why people are converting them to money orders... Just simply use them and when you finally run it out, you pay the difference. If you don't want to hassle with carrying another card, I see that, but the trade off is the hassle of getting a money order.

Walk to the service area of WalMart when I am making a trip there anyway. Hand them the card and three quarters. Get a money order for $500 and a nickel back. Shop. Leave. Deposit money order the next time I am at the bank for cash. If that is too much of a hassle, I would love to have your level of stress in life! ;)
By doing that I now have the money in the bank...like all of my other money. I do not have to carry another card, remember to use it, and keep track of it. I get at least 1% back on any of my credit card transactions, so even then I am coming out ahead with a minimum of $5 return on that money. Plus it is sitting in my bank account instead of someone else's.
You cannot see why so many of us are doing this; we cannot see why those of you that are not keep making such a big deal about it. :p

I don't recall making a big deal out of it, just stated that it was possible to use the cards without having to buy something for $500.00 exactly like many people in this thread have assumed.

You are also greatly oversimplifying the average trip to Walmart in terms of time spent in addition to standing in the Walmart Money Center line as well. These days my time is more important than money. Its pretty much impossible at my local Walmart to do what you mention in under 15 mins from the time you hit the parking lot. Usually even longer. You might have the nicest Walmart in the country however.

I will give you credit on the $5 credit card money back. That is an excellent reason to do what you did. Had not seen that mentioned yet.
