We're not putting the $500 spiff towards a new car with VW - and since we're out of warranty - we're using a private mechanic for any maintenance and repairs. If something comes up I guess, we'll use it but I don't see anything right now. With a 2010, we've got 105k on the clock and climbing fast. We're going to depreciate the car far faster than the lawsuit can I think.

Wife wants a new car next summer, and she's set her mind on a 328d X-drive. She let me get my new 550i last year when she took the TDI. I am not in a position to negotiate. :)

I put an ad up on Craig's List offering 10% discount to use the card with me. I'd doubt I'll get takers, but one never knows.

Are there any dealer items that people buy on a regular basis that would be easy to sell on ebay? I'm hesitant to buy $500 worth of oil, but at least I can use some and it's universal. I think the dealer will charge far more than most auto parts stores anyhow.

If anyone in the Sacramento area reads this, I'll work with you if you need something at the dealer.

As far as CARB and EPA - may the fleas of a thousand camels infest their armpits. My car runs cleaner than the generation before and your ridiculous standards do nothing more than put an ever increasing burden on the rest of us to keep you employed and expanding your ranks.

I'd have paid good money for software like this during my racing days! Germans certainly do have talented engineers, even if they weren't PC this time.

Spool up, brake off, burn out.... :)

I'm going to try that. But I may offer it at $400. Have the $500 cash in hand $900 would equal about 4.1% of what I paid for it.

Tires? I checked with one parts manager and I could get 4 tires with an other $50+ cash

This is the first time ever for me to post on this forum. I wanted to tell my experience with the VW Goodwill/Owner Credit package. I registered on December 20th and finally received my package on February 10th. I headed to the dealership, which is 45 minutes away after work yesterday to get the cards activated. The process started out fine, but after sometime later I was asked if I had tried to activate these cards before. Of course not! The lady went back to try to resolve the issue. More time goes by and she comes back out and fills me in on what's happening. Turns out that somehow, my cards were activated under someone else! How in the world could this happen?! What nonsense! There is no solution at that time and I was sent home. The lady at the dealership told she will call again to try to get this resolved and she will contact me once the cards are activated. We’ll see after Monday how the story ends on this.

Is it possible that you registered twice for the package??
No, I didn't register for the package twice. I didn't think I had to register at all for it as I thought since they already knew I had an affected vehicle because they sent me letters and emails stating so. I only found out when my dealership sent me a letter before VW Canada even sent me one stating what I needed to do to in order to get the package.
My understanding on what went wrong is that whoever had gone in to the dealership to have their cards activated, their name etc. was linked to my cards instead of their own cards. Still boggles my mind on how that can happen. Sure there's human error, but I would think there's bunch of ways to cross reference things to make sure you have the correct person linked to the correct package. I don't know how their system is set up but I don't think this sort of thing shouldn't have happened. Could the bright side be that it hasn't happened to anyone else?!

That is about what I thought to be fair for the card...80-90% cash value. The one guy on here offering to buy them will not budge from 50%. I should try the CL approach.

Can't blame him for offering 50%. If I needed-wanted the card I might offer that much. Maybe.

On the other hand other TDICLUB members may in the future offer a better price;)

I might go (LOCAL) CL at about $400 ~~ just to see. You never know. Figure $400 would be all so SWEET:D

UPDATE:

Dealership called me back to tell me there still isn't a solution, but as soon as there is a resolution she will let me know. I asked what are they going to do, sit on this and pretend there isn't a problem and i'll never hear from them again?! She said she'll give it until Friday/Monday and will keep contacting them. She said either someone with affected vehicle used my VIN or problem happened on VW's end. I responded by asking HOW IS THAT EVEN POSSIBLE?!?!?!?! She didn't know then said it's probably on VW's end. How could this have even been able to happen at all?!?!?! THIS IS SO RIDICULOUS!!! They better have a resolution real soon. Of course my maintenance is coming due.

Such a big thread so I hate asking something I am sure has been covered in detail but do I understand correctly that some of you have taken the $500 gift card to western union and paid yourself $500 cash with it and just come out of pocket the fee for that?

The $500 VISA card (not the dealership only white card) can be used to purchase a money order. However, Walmart is a lot cheaper than Western Union for the money order fee ($0.70). You will probably need the PIN number too (4569).

Have Fun!

Keep in mind that VW is working through third parties to get this done. Probably someone fat fingered a VIN or something like that. They'll figure it out.

I forget the numbers, but VW has hundreds of thousands of these refund cards in the system. Finding an issue fixing it can be a significant task.

Sure mistakes happen and yes there's thousands of eligible people for this package, but there should be something to catch such errors that would be flagged when something doesn't match.

Is anyone still skeptical and not sure if they should accept this? I don't know what to do. I don't want to regret it for some reason you know?

Yes, there should be. That something is the person at the dealer who activates the cards. They're supposed to match the vin against the registration, the name against the driver's license, etc.

Some are more diligent than others; sometimes, someone who is diligent gets interrupted (perhaps by business that actually makes them money) and fouls up. The backstop against this was a human being; we're all subject to the occasional mistake.

Have you called VW Customer Care? I do believe this thread has this exact story some 300 posts ago.

What would you be skeptical about? It's a no-strings attached gift as a way to keep us from en-masse blasting VW publicly.

Austin ~~ I am in a CAS and I talked directly to one attorney in the firm.

He told me to take th $1,000 as it would NOT effect the settlement in any way. Have the first $500 in the bank. May buy VW something or sell the other $500. Anyway it felt good to have something NOW. Who knows when (if) we will ever get any thing in a settlement.

NOTE My free advice is worth what you pay for it.

Nope, not skeptical. Used the dealer card for my 40k service, used the prepaid card to pay off the bill for a crown to my dentist. Had the cards for about 2 whole days before they were 100% used.

No I had not bothered to contact customer care because I believe the person at the dealership is taking care of this and VW should have this problem in their system already.

Glad you got 100% value quickly:)

I got the $500 in the bank ~~ but the other $500 is not needed for anything on my particular vehicle ~~ as it is a 2015 under full warranty. My card expires in 2016 ~~~ having lots of time to sell it ~~ or buy something (tires?)

Still it was-is a SLAP to not just get the full $1,000 in cash:mad:

Oh well ~~~ life goes on:p

Mine lasted about that long too. 80k service and an apple watch for the wife's Christmas present.

I just used mine to pay for the 20,000 mile service, and bought a spoiler for the wife's Jetta. Still have about $50 left on it.

For what it's worth, I went to the local grocery store's customer service for my money order. Western Union there only cost $1.00. It was worth 30c to me to NOT have to step foot in Walmart.
