The story is that the wagon was demolished and the Tahoe had a big dent in the side. 99% of the Tahoe damage wasn't caused by the Passat.

Err, 100% of the damage was caused by the Passat. Yeah, it's not an impressive dent in the side -- but, the Tahoe would not have rolled over if hadn't been hit in the side.

I've heard of top-heavy vehicles being easy to roll, but not like this! I usually think of them rolling over in response to going off the edge of the road, or similar. Not from a T-bone accident.

I assume the energy was dissipated in the Passat by structural deformation, and in the Tahoe by rolling over and crushing the roof. I don't think there's really too much to be gleaned from this particular accident except that good crush zones and airbags can help in a frontal collision, but rollovers can be dangerous.

I didn't see any front door frame deformation on the Passat, on either side.

To be fair, that was a mid-1990s Tahoe; I'm sure GM builds safer vehicles today than it did then.

To be fair, Volkswagens were pretty safe before and are also getting better.

Youtube, and the IIHS, beg to differ about the historically safe aspect....

All of those vehicles obtained a poor rating, most 90s weres were marginal at best for safety in crashes.

I realize that it all depends on the wreck, but lets face it, I don't trust GM to have improved anything from 93 to 03. I think a 2006 model would have had just as bad damage, with more airbag deployment, as that 94.

Look at those stupid tires on the Tahoe-that extra little height probably made it easier to roll than if the stock tires/rims were on it.All that matters is both people came out alive....dude was probably texting or adjusting his radio....
