The author also missed the chance of pointing out that although diesel is more expensive at the pump than regular, the price per mile is lower.
From looking at the cars, I would agree that hybrids ought to be more complex than a diesel or gasoline engine. You have batteries and regenerative brakes to charge the batteries. You have multiple engines (gas and electric) that must work in combination all the time. He did not mention anything about repairs on either car.
