"He also said that buyers don’t see diesels to be as complex as fuel-sipping hybrids."

Ohhh how the masses will learn! Everytime I mention i have a diesel, it's ohh man you're going to have that along time, diesels last forever and won't need any repairs.

"Until about a year ago, purchasers of VW’s clean diesel autos were eligible for the same “green car” federal tax credit as buyers of hybrids. The benefit expired for diesel vehicles."

Benifit expired for everything except the Volt and Leaf.

The author also missed the chance of pointing out that although diesel is more expensive at the pump than regular, the price per mile is lower.

From looking at the cars, I would agree that hybrids ought to be more complex than a diesel or gasoline engine. You have batteries and regenerative brakes to charge the batteries. You have multiple engines (gas and electric) that must work in combination all the time. He did not mention anything about repairs on either car.

Also wasn't that that the "Lean Burn" program didn't expire, wasn't it that VW used up all their credits? Similar to Toyota using up all their credits first few model years of the prius.

Emissions regs will take the cake on the diesels because there's only a few companies (Bosch and Bog Warner) willing to play with NA rules and work with VW.

Where as if a manufactur wanted to get into hybrids, how many different vendors are there to choose from?

All of the hybrid and clean burn incentives stopped Dec 31, 2010. Did not matter you produced what or how many they sold by the end of last year.

The overall incentive plan ended Dec 31, 2010. Did not matter if any manufacturer had made their goal or not.

"clean burn tax credit" was extened into 2010, but VW used up all their credits by May-June 2010, if I'm not mistaken.

Yes, VW/Audi used up all of the slots but the complete program ended in 2010.
