A question (and a bump):

What coverage is available for a 2003 Beetle TDI, 48681 miles? Looking at one now...

Don,

My apologies for the delay!

I can put the New Car Extended service contract on this one:

7yrs or 70k from a starting date of Jan 01,2003=$1556 + 6% pa tax=$1649.36

7yrs or 100k from a starting date of Jan 01,2003=$2031 + 6% Pa tax=$2152.86

Not alot of time so something to consider!

Thank you for the opportunity either way!

Thanks

Thanks for taking the time on Friday of a holiday weekend to talk to me Chris. I found him to be very nice and extremely upfront with the information regarding the warranty, which in my case being that I drive 500 miles per week might actually persuade me not to buy a warranty. It's a flip of a coin, really, and he was honest enough to say as much.

Chris - thanks for the lead and the info, and I'll talk to you next week.

Whoops! Let's try this again.

Bought a 2006 New Beetle TDI with ~32K on the clock. Certified so it has that warranty to 74K. Extended costs???

Congrats Don!

7yr or 100k entended Platinum coverage would be $1831 -$300 discount for being a CPO so the full number would be $1531 + PA tax=$1622.86

Thank you to everyone this past year that is allowed me to help them w/ their automotive needs and the trust to EARN their business on the VW RealDriver extended service contracts.

I will be posting the new contract verbage, plans, and certainly my best deal on the contract very soon. I am still figuring it out myself. They changed a few things around and I will post them for all to see.

Thanks again!

Chris

Neil,

I was off today and did not get the message. I will get it first thing in the morning and either call you or write you back.

Thank you for the consideration.

I'm confused about the difference bw extended service and warranty

I bought the Platinum extended warranty when I purchased my '09 TDI SW. I dropped off the car at the dealer yesterday for it's 40k servicing scheduled for today and was surprised when they quoted $1k for the 40k service (we bought one of the first ones off the trucks in summer '08 and do many family car trips, hence the miles).

My problem: I thought that all service was covered until 70k miles under the Platinum plan I purchased. Is that right?

I'm so confused about the difference bw an extended service and extended warranty plan. Are they the same under this plan that I purchased? I need to know ASAP as I need to let the dealer know this morning on whether to proceed with the work.

TIA

I've never heard of VW's extended warranty plans covering normal maintenance. Read what you signed as maybe you purchased an extended maintenance plan also.

What is the dealer doing for $1k? Do you have a DSG? Besides inspecting a lot of stuff, the 40k maintenance includes: oil and filter change, fuel filter change, and DSG filter and fluid change. DIY for probably $200+ in parts. If air and pollen filter need changed, add another $40+ to parts. So your cost for parts would be around $250 and the dealer's charge is probably close to $400 (maybe more) for parts. So, if dealer is doing all of that plus labor at say $125/hr, $1k is probably correct.

Yes, for the $1k, they're doing the 40k service...

$1k for the 40k service included in the maintenance manual. To be honest I was blindsided. I thought I purchased an extended maintenance *and* warranty plan. It's the Platinum plan noted in this thread and sold by VW via independent insurance co. Even in this thread, it's confusing on whether this is an extended service, which I define as "maintenance" or repair plan, which I define as covering repair/replacement of items once the manufacturer's warranty expires.

What makes things worse is when I took the car in for its first servicing the VW dealership wanted me to foot the bill...they didn't even know service for the first 3 years was included in their own warranty for the 09 Jetta...took them about 6 months to catch on.

So if the dealer is confused on what they're selling, I can see how I'm confused.

Update - Extended Service Plan vs Extended Warranty

So here's where I hate VW and myself for not understanding what I was buying!

You can buy the extended warranty...great! But you better opt for adding on that extended *service* plan (that pesky little section at the bottom of your extended warranty application) because after your free service for your TDI expires at 36k miles, you're going to pay as much as $4.5k for servicing your car from 40k to 120k miles. Amazing! After calling 3 VW dealerships in the SF Bay area, VW of Oakland was the only one responsive and informed enough to let me know that there is a difference between an extended warranty and extended service plan.

Basically from 40k to 120k miles, you could be out of pocket as much as $3.5k-$4.5k  for servicing your beloved TDI (based on California VW costs). The range is based on quotes I received for the all the servicings between 40k and 120k including the *biggie* servicings at 40k, 80k and 120k where your DSG is serviced. The 40k/80k/120k servicing could cost as much as $1k each time (per two VW dealerships that I called and got quotes from) to as little as $500 each time (a third VW dealership I called). I still need to vet the 3rd dealership because I'm concerned that $500 quote is for a 2.0 engine, not a TDI.

As far as taking the TDI to a regular mechanic. That's like rolling the dice. I called around where I live to a couple of extremely reputable/respected VW specialists and their responses were "too technical of a car" and referred me to only one other mechanic who quoted me just over $600 to service it. Based on going the regular mechanic route, the costs for servicings 40k to 120k would be in the $3k range.

What's the silver lining in all of this? You can still purchase extended *SERVICE* plans well after you've driven your TDI off the lot but it's going to cost you. If people are paying full price for their TDI SWs like we did when they were the first ones rolling off the trucks in Summer '08, you'll be out of pocket $27k plus taxes and registration so $30k plus another $4.5k for servicing to 120k miles. That's basically a $35k car!!!
