VW Caddy Maxi 1.6tdi - Engine won't turn off?

I drove home yesterday, switched the key off and removed it, yet the engine was still running? The radio, fan heater etc turned off but not the engine, even after stalling the van to turn off the motor, I still had power on the dash. I disconnected the battery, and as soon as I reconnected it, again I had lights on the dash even though the key was still in my hand. Later with the engine running, I disconnected the electrical lead off the back of the ignition barrel, and the engine kept running? I'm a bit lost so I was just wondering if anyone had come across this issue at all?

Not sure on that model (as they do not sell them here) but I would want to ask what module gets the signal from the key position and see if it thinks that the key is still where it should be. Probably a Steering Column module or Central Electronics module.
