i wonder if that 7th gear made all the difference. That and maybe generally lighter modern materials being used (plastic oil pans for the win!)
Oooh!? Plastic oil pans are thing now? Where can I get me one of those!? 😆 I'd love a plastic exhaust manifold too! Maybe a plastic turbo would be nice?!

I was able to average 82+ mpg over a 500 mile route in an observed fuel economy competition. Sustaining 80 mpg for the 27-ish gallons the "18.5 gallon" B4 wagon tank actually holds would be nearly 2,200 miles.
I had applied to the Guinness Book of World Records people about setting a record but was informed the car had to be a current production model.
