I would like to offer a sincere 'thank you' to VeeDubTDI for keeping the discourse (mostly) civil and on-point. Full-time job lately..

Also long overdue to toss in a few bucks to help support this website.

But it seems that the Cruze and the BMW are both able to meet the EPA requirements... They both have 4-cylinder 2.0L TDIs that make more power than the VW so maybe the key is to make more power!!! Just kidding, but that would be nice huh!?!?!?
Although, do we know that the Cruze actually complies?

We know the previous-gen X5 does, but that's about it.

Also, the Cruze's acceleration and city MPG problems will be a combination of a rather ordinary torque-converter automatic (less efficient at getting power to the wheels than a DSG), and GM's horrendous problems with keeping weight in check. Curb weight on the Cruze Turbo Diesel was 3471 lbs. Compare to a (larger) 2015 Jetta TDI at 3296 lbs for DSG, or a (much, much larger) 2015 Passat TDI at 3497 lbs for DSG.

(Mind you, the new Cruze will be lighter, which will likely help future generations.)

Count me in.
Thanks, guys! I appreciate it. It has, indeed, been a full-time job (with overtime) the past few days.

I am a Muslim and I agree with you, I would also like to take this opportunity and vote for an independent country El-Texas so that the Muslim patriot soldiers of US marines can invade this newly established state of El-Texas but will be mesmerized by President Donald Trump's intellectually advanced speeches and will convert to be his majesty's loyal subjects and will live happily ever after [Disclaimer: This is all sarcasm no pun intended, north America is my home and I love it]....just a humble suggestion relax and ask the "OIL MAN" who'd be happier if we were all driving V8 guzzlers...looks like the days of cheap diesels are over...very unfortunate indeed !!

And I'd be surprised if VW goes away - they're the biggest automaker in the world now, and if GM was too big to fail...

VWoA may go away, of course, but VWAG? Nah.

2010 Jetta Sportwagen DSG - Sold back to VW. Replaced with Sportwagen 2.5 GAS
I only wasted my time on like three pages of this utterly ridiculous thread, and wish I hadn't even spent that long... It's pretty sad that this community is filled with so many losers just looking for a hand-out or a free ride... Full refund of your 6+ yr old car? Punitive/personal damages for "having unknowingly polluted the earth all these years"? Are you people f***ing serious?!? You weren't crying when you were getting 40+ mpg, but now that the fun is over and you may have to go back to an unimaginable ~35 mpg you want a new car for free??? I swear I've heard it all...

Seriously people, $*** happens; People lie, cheat, and steal and guess who runs all these huge corporations?? Today it's VW and tomorrow it'll be Mars sneaking morphine into their candy to hook kids. It's all bullsh*t so take off your rose-tinted glasses and grow up. Trying to jump onto a 11-million person class-action suit with any expectation aside from a free reflash and a "we're sorry we lied" letter is pure delusion. Hopefully some of you idiots will read this post, cause: You're NOT getting a new car! You're NOT getting your DPF replaced for free! You're NOT getting a pro-rated refund or gas allowance for life! And you're NOT going to prove your soul was damaged by VW and you want $1M for it!

So STFU, quit your sniveling, and go back to driving your stupid cars.

End Rant/
And you are an Idiot. Only few people here want new cars. Most of us bought these cars for great fuel economy and torque or power. So suddenly we can not have these features. How would you feel if you bought a house with 4 bedrooms and few years later were told that you can not use one of the bedrooms? Having known that one day I will be forced to detune my car and loose an X amount on mpg and power I would have never bought it. This is what people are concerned about. I don't give a crap about the NOx amounts. If I don't have to detune my car I am not going to waste my time on any class action lawsuits and I will just keep driving. If otherwise I would expect VW to compensate me accordingly or take my car as a good trade in for a newer VW model. Hopefully a TDI without a cheating software. I am sure the value of the new models when they are allowed back will be pretty low as VW will try to get rid of them.

2002 TDI (ALH) with 513,000 km. First Owner and very happy... No Problems, never left us stranded on the Highway. Average useage is about between under 4 ltr. and 5 ltr. Normal longdistance travel: 4.1/100
Maybe after the VW TDI "stuff" is over, EPA will go after all the Gas engine cars with the wrong mileage stickers in the showrooms?

While we have not seen independent verification. We do know that the Cruze and the 328d both use 2.0L 4-cylinder engines that are rated at higher HP than the VW 2.0L and they also use additional emissions equipment and finally they both have lower MPG fuel ratings. It would seem that they are both complying when compared to the VW TDI that gets better mileage but makes less power and has a much simpler emissions system... Educated assumption on my part, but it seems like fairly sound reasoning...

The hesitation/slow acceleration from a dead stop with the Cruze seems to be built into the tuning and for all we know is emissions related, one of the tuners I know believes it is to avoid/reduce visible smoke and he removes the lag from the tuning when he tunes them. He has gotten more power and A LOT more torque from them while also improving fuel mileage!!! I want to say that he has told me ~50 MPG while averaging 85-90 MPH on long road trips!

I believe the next gen Cruze is a lot lighter than the first gen so that will help handling and driving dynamics a lot! But honestly compared to a stock TDI I did not feel that the Cruze lacked anything when I had one to review for Diesel World magazine.

I am really looking forward to the Colorado truck with the 2.8L Duramax engine!!! It should really be a blast to drive, and fun to play with!!! I will report on it after I get to slide behind the wheel of one...:D

sooner or later the shady way the German companies do business catches up with them

Siemens with bribes , HDW with submarines , Krauss Mafei with Leopard tanks

this is the 21st century , hard to conceal dirty tricks

I do think though that VAGs knee jerk reaction would be to pull out of NA market

I heard this on the way home...

WNYC "The Takeaway - Dear Volkswagen: I want my money back"

http://www.thetakeaway.org/story/volkswagen-owners-feel-betrayed/
The article is mistaken on the issue:

"On Friday, news broke that the car company had deliberately deceived EPA regulators in order to make it appear that its diesel cars were more fuel efficient than they really are."

Our vehicles *are* as fuel efficient as they say they are (and often moreso). This is not the same thing as manufacturers fibbing on their MGP estimates.

VW made the vehicles appear to be less "polluting" than they actually are.

Just so everybody knows, this thread demonstrates why TDIClub doesn't have a general discussion forum anymore.

Government of Canada opens an investigation into Volkswagen's alleged use of defeats

http://www.newswire.ca/news-release...rcumvent-emissions-regulations-528723931.html

This is big news for Canada and could be a big problem for Volkswagen. Penalties for violating Canadian emissions regulations can go up to $6,000,000 per offense plus surrender of profits earned! That makes the EPA's fines look like lunch money.

Touareg and Sportwagon Sold to VW
As one who has purchased 5 new VW vehicles in the past 12 years (4 of them diesels and at least two of them affected by this revelation...waiting on word about the Touareg) here is my $0.02, FWIW:

I love my VW cars, but VW is going to have a very difficult time selling me another car anytime soon. Like someone who has been cheated on, the trust is gone in this relationship.

As stated by others, I bought these diesels because I believed they combined fuel economy, power and a small environmental footprint like no other vehicle.

Turns out that what seemed too good to be true, was too good to be true.

VW has committed fraud against their customers, all air breathers, and the U.S. Government (and apparently other governments as well).

I am pissed, plain and simple. The longer I think about this and the more I learn, the more pissed I get.

Like most, I bought my TDI JSW for performance, efficiency, and environmental friendliness. I balanced those three things against the generally higher cost of diesel and the generally higher repair costs of VWs (anecdotal, this was my first).

I can't understand the people who are willing to ingore environmental unfriendliness as long as they get to keep performance and efficiency. That seems deliberately evil, anyone who knowingly bought a car like that would be considered a dick (sorry, I'm not trying to be inflamatory or personal)
I can't understand the people who are willing to detune and live with poor peformance and poor efficiency as long as their emissions get back to the required level. Anyone who knowingly bought a car like that would be considered an idiot.
We bought TDIs for the whole package.

I'm pretty sure VW doesn't have a miracle software fix hidden up their sleeve. I don't know how VWAG will be able to afford it, but the only way I'm not going to feel cheated is if they buyback at essentially original purchase price minus ~$100/month. Net, they rented to me for $1200 / year.

Of course then I'll have to go test drive the Prius V again, and barf. Or the CMax (didn't test drive that one last time). There's a dearth of good alternatives to "JSW with promised power, efficiency, and environmental friendliness" unless you can affort a Tesla.

Hoping that VW didn't fake the gasoline Emission results as well.

Immediate future for VW depends on Gas.

Time for VW to Sponsor independent studies to verify the emissions compliance of gas models.

China is not as much of a worry for VW. BBC reported that only a tiny fraction of VW's sold in China are diesels.
I'd guess any and all geographies are crucial to VW at this time, not only because of TDI populations within, but general sales. They'll be mired in this emissions scandal for some time to come, and in parallel they must maintain non-TDI sales to the extent possible to keep things afloat. I suspect the gassers are experiencing a significant sales slowdown due to the brand's newly-tarnished reputation.

I feel sorry right now for people whose livelihoods depend on VW.
