You are currently able to legally drive and register your TDI in all 50 states. If you think your car will suddenly become more desirable after the dust settles...then I've got a nice JSW for you. For you sir...I'll even deliver.

Holy Christ, use your effing head - after the EPA grants an emissions waiver

2nd turbo failure in less than a year!!

Hello,
I need help from the Expert Hive Mind of TDIClub!

We are locked in an ongoing struggle with a VW dealer from hell.
I have posted a few times in this discussion about it, but didn't want to add another long-winded chapter to our soap-opera here.

So I started a new discussion thread:
http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?p=5013394#post5013394

If anyone wants to chime in there on what we should do next, I'd love any and all advice!

About $27k seems to be the going price... Before tax credits!

Respectfully,

How much does the cheapest one cost? And does the tax payers (STATE or FEDERAL sub it.
After the $7500 federal tax credit and I believe there's a $2500 California incentive too, the cost is about the same as the cheapest gas Golf... And they're still only selling a few thousand a year!

I know - we were discussing resale value - my point was that if the emissions is waived, the values will pop back
Holly guacamole....You are brilliant! geez.

When you exclaim your brilliant ideas....you should be clear about them. Only you can really understand you.

I'm not sure what economics courses that you've taken....but I sure hope that you aren't licensed to offer investment advice.

Never been a big fan of SUVs either. The JSW is a very attractive little wagon, huge cargo room, and it's actually just about the same length as my sedan, never realized it until I checked the dimensions.

Our family's SUV was the 1999 Ford Explorer XLT 4.0. It was a beast in snow but sure was a gas guzzler. The Good Year Wranglers I bought were made of Kevlar and made it look awesome. I used to bring it in to the city and parallel park it in 2 feet of blizzard snow...no problem.

Not crazy about the new Explorer's styling, looks like all the others. They're all Gaz guzzlers 20 mpgs...yeah...right
Wife has a 2016 Explorer, 2.0 Ecoboost. She consistently gets 24 mpg, 80/20 hwy/city, usually obeys speed limit. I got about 20 mpg on a recent 2000 mile trip, I drive 5-10 over the limit (have a speeding ticket on the counter from Cedar Rapids to prove it). Plenty of power. I am impressed at mileage for such a big, comfortable SUV.

OK that all was totally off topic, won't do it again.

Does anybody have a total for state and federal tax credits/incentives for our TDIs? Just curious.

SUVs sure have come a long way, I rode in one of those new Explorers once, they're nice.

Very refined and well insulated ride with much less road, wind and engine vibration, feels safe.

In other words, a very comfortable ride.

did your Explorer come up with a DPF and leatherette seats ? kidding :D

Looks like 09 got $1300 but after that got nothing.

This is pretty funny.

http://www.greencarreports.com/news...s-wanted-electric-car-credits-for-diesels-too

Former EPA official Marge Oge told The New York Times that the company's German executives were "extraordinarily arrogant" during talks with the agency, and dismissed electric cars as "a waste of time."
Volkswagen suggested that its "clean diesels" weren't just equivalent to hybrids and electric cars, Oge said, but in fact better.

My wife brought our 2012 Jetta in for its last carefree maintenance today.
Service manager said that the latest scuttlebutt was that there WILL be a buyback (Gen 1's).
No idea when, though.

I have a 2010 and I received the $1,300 credit.

On hte Mel Brooks comments and they can't make movies like that any more, I thought the jokes in Ted 2 were pretty irreverent, I know I laughed and cringed and laughed some more.

There is not an option as a replacement for my JSW TDI. What vehicle has...

  • Great gas milage
  • 66+ cu ft. of cargo space
  • manual transmission
  • pano sunroof (yes I like mine even though the screen broke)
  • diesel performance

So, I will have to compromise in whatever my replacement will be and I am expecting a fair settlement...significantly more that KBB prior to dieselgate.

I own 2 (Un)clean TDi's....have followed and commented my opinions a few times regarding a potential resolution.

As has been said many times history - this too shall pass.

A lot of us here are speculating and passing on the things we have been told by someone supposedly more "In the know" than we are, but what I am concerned the most about is "Am I going to lose my car?" If a buyback does happen and I am made a "Generous offer" to purchase it back will I really do it? will I drive my car to the dealership that one last time and give it up? what will I replace it with? nothing else even comes close. If I keep it will I run into problems down the road like not being able to register it(Kentucky has no emission laws), will parts availability be an issue if the largest portion is bought back and crushed or sent away to some magical land?
Is there any chance at all that cars operating in none emissions states(we all know it WILL pass an emissions test anyway lol) be allowed to soldier on? If these cars can not be modified to be compliant I don't see how we can be allowed to keep them on the road, Buying a car and ripping off all the emission stuff is one thing, but when the emission stuff never totally worked in the first place I guess that is another :(

In 2002 I elected to go TDI because of my logging around 1000 miles/week. 100k miles is a little under 2 years of driving for me. I'm not worried about resale values. I previously was a friend of OPEC doing the same amount of driving in a Subaru WRX gas guzzler prior to my 02 Golf TDI. I like to drive and naturally I tend to gravitate toward a "driver's car". I also need good fuel economy and downsizing to a penalty box gasser econobox was not an option. After 14 years and over 800k miles of diesel car ownership experience I don't regret my decision to go TDI one bit. Regardless of what happens with dieselgate I absolutely will not be swayed from owning and driving diesel vehicles. No more gassers!

I have owned 3 TDIs since 2002 (02 Golf, 05 PD Jetta Wagen, 10 JSW). I'm into BMW Advanced Diesel now but if I still owned a TDI I would simply keep it and keep driving it. No more gassers!

Have fun!
Yup, I feel the same way. Ditching my gas tractor and buying a diesel one. When I make a truck purchase next year, also will be a diesel. If I bought another beater car whenever my Saab dies, it would be another TDI (probably an ALH or PD). And no desire to get the gassers that get 38mpg that several talk about on this forum. The first thing that comes to mind is a Chevy Sonic. No power on the turbocharged model, and if I floor it just to get to 75, I'm still back down to like 24mpg. Not to mention a blah driving experience.

BTW, I'm jealous of the torque numbers on your Beamers...

HOW DARE YOU SIR.... Saying you can't get a major repair for less than 2K...

Sir I am OFFENDED!!!!!

Please retract your statement... you are selling the VW TDI short...
You can't get a major repair for less than 5K....
What's defined as major? I've never paid more than $2000 for any repairs to my car, unless you want to count my turbo and exhaust upgrades (but for what I gained, I don't consider that a negative by any means). And for those who go to the stealership and pay that as opposed to a guru/independent shop, I don't feel the least bit sorry for them.

I would imagine the diesel Cruze would at least address the worst parts of that experience, but I am not so sure the rest of the car would be worthy. No wonder they did not sell many diesels. Paying $28k for a $14k back of the lot rental turd is probably not going to fly. My uncle's stripper Jetta S with an automatic is FAR nicer to drive, and that is an inexpensive car, too. But it is quieter, stops better, steers better, has better outward visibility, has simpler less fussy controls, LOOKS better, and I think even uses less fuel.
Wow, you really didn't like that Cruze then. I had a Jetta S loaner before, and I thought that was the biggest pile of dog poop VW had. Stalled on me going up a hill on US-101... TWICE! Chevy has come a way since its bankruptcy, but I'd still consider something like a Hyundai instead if I were looking for a crappy, basic car.

Come to Texas and drive I45 to Houston from Dallas. It's posted 75 now, and a lot of places, 85 to 90 is required to not get blown off the road . . .

Tell me about it. Just as bad or worse on I-20 heading west towards Ft. Worth. I was doing 79 in the regular lane and people were still passing me up, including big rigs!

Scary to the max

Fastest I have driven my golf is (about) 80-85 ONLY to switch lanes for an unexpected upcoming lane change and off ramp.

Thank God I had-have the TORQUE ~~ 60 mph to 80-85 in 3-5 seconds:eek:
I did a no-no; fastest I went was 114, and it was during the break-in period. Just wanted to see what I could get it up to. Fastest recently was 109/110 on SH-130. Speed limit is 85, so everyone drives fast anyways. Ironically, all the cops I saw were headed in the opposite direction and nobody was running radar. I kept my pace for a good 3 miles or so and then slowed to around 95.

I must say, I am a bit envious of you and pkhoury who reside in more rural areas, where traffic is decidedly lighter. The TDI would be fun to 'wring out' a bit but a lot of us have urban commutes that really suck. Sometimes, the 13 mile drive home takes an hour.
I don't envy you. When I lived in CA working on my undergrad, the 4 mile trip home would take 30 minutes in normal traffic, 45-60 minutes in rush hour. For FOUR miles! Now, it takes me an hour to get to San Antonio, and that's about 65-75 miles away.

Not really . . . more an excercise in controlled boredom. It's the dolt that wants to do 60 in the 75 that is running 85 that is the problem, not the speed itself. This isn't quite like Nevada, where if you fall asleep at the wheel, it takes 10 minutes to run off the road, but it's close . . .

What size OEM fuel tank?
I don't recall . . . the brain says somewhere around 32, and a search says 34, which makes sense. I usually don't go much below the low fuel light if I can manage it. . . as I said, I do a cross country from TX to MI a couple times a year, and never fail to run about 20 MPG hand calculated . . .

You nailed it several ways

My first thought is a double damn on vw

Second thought is a double damn on EPA

I live in Oklahoma and we have no testing. 19 other states also have zero testing

My is paid for ~~ sooooo what would I replace it with. Honda Civic? Toyota Camry-Corolla? Nissan (what)? No matter how generous the settlement might be ~~~~ my feeling we will get a shaft in the final act.

The only way you are going to get a "shaft" is if you part ways with the car. Period. Nobody is going to MAKE you part ways with your car. Even if it makes more financial sense to do so, the powers that be are not going to infringe that much on your freedom and take your property. Cars are not exactly imminent domain, and it isn't like these cars are randomly exploding at intersections causing direct harm to other people.

If you like your car, then just keep driving it and stop worrying so much. Life is too short for that.
