Why do you think the goodwill program was initiated?

Goodwill my ass. Anyone who bought a car AFTER this dropped, will get nothing. The good will program was to certify owners, and milages, condition at the time of scandal drop. Not "good will"
Not true at all. I emailed VAG about my car, which I purchased in January 2016. I was checking to see if the previous owner didn't claim the goodwill package, but turns out they did.

During that conversation, I asked if my information could be put on record for any outcome on the scandal. They took my information, and assured me that I'd be contacted when the decision was finalized.

This made me laugh. If I responded to all his posts as I'd like...I'd have a lifetime ban. I'm still trying to determine whether it would be worth it....and I'm thinking that yes...it would be worth it.

Just wait till you no longer have a TDi ;)

Some type of truck. I drive a Golf, the wife has a Mini Cooper S. This buyout will give me an excellent start on a "hauling/moving" type of vehicle.

Yeah... But if you were involved in a situation were your vehicle was deemed a total loss, I would fear the settlement offer from your insurance company. You are in Canada and I am uncertain how insurance laws in Canada work.
For those in the U.S....
Like it or not, these vehicles are now worth more than FMV. IF VW comes through with a settlement offer of FMV (excellent condition) plus 20-30-40-50% you would be foolish to keep driving the vehicle if you were intending on accepting the buyback offer anyway. The buyback would be CONSIDERABLY better than any insurance companies Total loss Settlement offer... Mark my words on that...
If you totaled your car, you would likely receive current FMV based on the insurance company's methodology. Nothing more and nothing less. Kiss any incentives, $5000 cash goodwill etc goodbye!!
If I had the funds to get two new vehicles right now, I would garage both my TDIs and wait until July. Driving them has now become a financial risk.
You have just won the "smartest post of the day" award. Please stop by the office at the end of the day to claim your prize.

As I understand it the company was putting 1 Billion for customer compensation or about $1700 each.
That is in addition to the FMV before Dieselgate.
Not a very tempting deal.
If your car is newer then FMV is higher. I assume the $1700 might be the same either way.
So with the $500 + $500 + 1700 = $2700 + FMV or not very tempting inless yout vehicle is a POS.
Even my non-POS 2009 JSW with 250,000 miles is worth more to me as what it is than the $5300 or so I might get.
Even the 2013 JSW would not tempt me to sell it.
I might, however, get it FIXED (however unlikely that might be) and then get it unfixed!
How much to put the DPF etc that I kept when it "fell off" back on and set the downpipe aside?

Out of TDI's
We have a 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe that the wife drives and LOVES IT. So that need is met!

I have the 2014 Passat TDI with 25,000 miles and it will go back to VW. Nice car, but fragile.

I also have a 2003 Jetta TDI that I am resurrecting from 298,000 miles of one owner bliss (see my rebuilt thread below). I will make this a daily driver and take my time deciding what to purchase to replace the Passat TDI.

Candidates are:

  1. New TSI Jetta
  2. 2004 -05 Corvette
  3. Older BMW convertible (or two seater conv.)

No Clue

I've been looking around and there isn't much out there that seems to be as fuel efficient, fun to drive or give me as much confidence that the engine is going to go well past 200k miles.
Maybe a slightly used Chevy 2500 with a duramax! Because I'm sure it puts out less NOx than my 2012 jetta tdi...
Anyone think about doing a bio-diesel conversion as a result of all this mess?

Returned 2012 Golf TDI, now 2015 Mazda CX-5 & 2018 Nissan Leaf SV
I already purchased my replacement vehicle on 3/29/16.
2016 Mazda CX-5 AWD fully loaded.

The Golf TDI sits in front of my house on the street unused until VW buys it back. I'm thinking of putting "storage" insurance on it but I would have to surrender my plates. If I do that, I have to park it in the garage and then I can't park my new car in the garage... damn you VW.
I also looked at the CX-5, but visibility was poor and passenger console armrest is missing. I hear they are a very responsive for spirited driving, at least for an SUV? I guess I need to do some test drives....

Subaru Forester XT.
I need more room for stuff and travelling now that I am retired.
I looked at the Tiguan, but it's not much bigger than my Golf.
Rear cargo area 15cu ft vs 23cu ft vs 34cu ft for Golf, Tiggy, Subie respectively.

This was good timing for me!
According to US News, the Gold has 22.8 cu ft...

Anyways, I purchased my Golf for commuting and road trips, so if I sold my car to VW my list would include:

Subaru Impreza (Hatchback)
Subaru Crosstrek
VW Golf
VW GSW
Mazda CX-5
Honda Civic (if they have the hatchback available)
GTI? it is just too beautiful of a car, but I do not know if it would be practical to put 30K miles a year to it (plus, it uses premium fuel)

I think that's my short list:D

Tesla Model 3 - need to make the TDI last a few years.

I've preordered a Tesla Model 3, who knows when I'll take delivery.

I've thought about this a lot as it's an opportunity for...

There's really nothing in the VW stable that catches my eye at all right now, and besides I have zero faith in VAG. I'll be looking closely at the Korean and Japanese offerings, perhaps Ford too.

I parked the Passat for now and pulled my F150 out.

I have no plans to replace the Passat. Maybe in a year or so, but for now I will go back to being payment free for a while.

Golf GTD - I can dream, right?

Probably going to check out the GTI, Fiesta ST, Mazda3 hatch. I'd be interested in a WRX if they brought back the hatchback.

I am in a holding pattern right now. I own a 2014 JSW, a 2011 Golf and a 2010 Chevy Silverado 1500 regular cab.

The Golf is used for work (over 100 miles per day)
The JSW is the wife's vehicle and is only driven 3-4 times a week (she works part time)
The Pickup is my hauler/camping/hunting truck and is useless for a growing family (regular cab)

My plan... when this mess finally works itself out...

1) Sell my Truck private party.
2) Sell back both my TDIs to VW immediately (Golf is paid for an I have a lien on the JSW)
3) Buy myself a 2015-2016 Ram 2500 4x4 6.4 hemi crew cab
4) Lease my wife a mid size SUV like a Dodge Durango or similar.
5) Purchase 5 year old, reliable. compact/mid size coupe/sedan... Ford Focus, Honda, Toyota, Subaru as a work only vehicle.
6) Never step foot in another VW dealer again unless it is to buy new tires with my $500.00 credit that my local dealer was nice enough to add to my account so it never expired.

That is it.... I will be jockeying vehicles for a while that is for sure...

And back on topic...

If indeed they are basing buyback off of value pre scandal, you can see why they wanted a photo of your odometer when you activated your Good Will package, and why you had to have a dealer activate it. It had little to do with verifying you as the owner of an affected vehicle as it did to establish value of your vehicle at the time.

Effective even on those that had their service done at non dealers. No chance of trying to say you put on 100k since September. Offering $1,000 is nearly a 100% effective method of getting everyone to comply, too. Sneaky, but let's face it, it is fair. You know damn well a bunch of people would lie to try to increase their value.

If the options are the buyback or the fix, I wonder if they would offer a third option: Keep the car, not fix it, and take compensation to make up the difference in value, rather than the whole KBB value. They may not be allowed to do that "officially", since it doesn't cure the problem of them being on the road.
dealer didn't ask about mileage, nor even step out from behind the desk when we activated the cards... what say ye to that?

Different reports, neither figure was mentioned in the court proceedings, stated 1b and 10b. A deal "in principal" has been agreed to. This means the specifics are still up in the air, but the general ground work has been laid out.

Anything beyond "buyback + compensation" or "compensation + wait for fix" is speculation in my book.

I have a 2013 Passat SEL. Large comfortable and efficient. And cheap. Currently owe $22K - financed by VW.

My choices would be (all used):
2011 -2013 E350 BT

An E70 BMW 35d

Both choices are in the mid to upper 20K range. Both models have a good community in term sof DIY, etc.

I'd prefer to keep my car and keep it unmolested. But since I'm in CA and will be forced into any fix presented in order to keep driving it - I may be forced to sell. Sucks for those of us in CARB states.

If I had an extra 10K laying around - I'd add in the 535d and the A6/A7 TDI into the mix. In CA the 535d's are extremely expensive. The MB's are cheap because they only start at about 45K so depreciation works out better. The 5 series STARTS at about $60K for the diesel. Ouch.

Good guy MB decided that an economy car (diesels) should cost LESS than the regular model - instead of forcing a premium for the diesel option.

The 535d's are rare around here - there's only two for sale used according to truecar in my state. And one has been in a front end accident.

Probably another VW if the incentives are right.

Wife has a Mk. VII, so I probably wouldn't go after one of those. Maybe it's bigger brother? :D

i also find it odd that the only website that had pre-scandal values has been taken off line just days before this announcement. I smell a rat here.
Your bank probably has the NADA books back to Sept still. Is it perfect, no, but it is a stake in the ground. Also the buybackmytdi.com site still has values from the days right after the release. Unlikely KBB dropped overnight, so the hit from a couple days later is about the same as from the day before.

You were required to state your mileage when you registered for the goodwill package.
True. My dealer walked out to my Touareg and snapped a few shots of the odo on his cell phone. He then uploaded those pics to some site and activated my goodwill cards.

Bummer is I drive about 3k miles/month. I had 7800 miles when the scandal hit and then put on an additional 5k miles on the car before the goodwill website went up. Ah well.

The $500 Dealer card was compensation to partially owners and mostly the dealer. I do feel bad for the dealers..

Somewhere I read about opportunity for Comment on the framework: I think each case should be heard individually. Because VW owners typically a) spend a lot on specific Mods, b) prefer long-term relationships with their vehicles and c) take care of their vehicles

However hearing cases individually would take forever, and, many (self-included) plan car investments years in advance and are not in a position to run out and buy a new car. ITS A MESS

$1Billion aint much for VW. 1,000,000,000 ÷480,000 is only $2100 per car. So they must be going to pay what the cars worth now. LOL.

Is it me, or does VW's math not work out on the announced settlement?

1 billion dollars divided by 480,000 affected cars is an average of $2,083.33 per owner. I'm guessing that VW is betting that most TDI owners are going to opt for the "fix", although the fix itself is unspecified.

My threshold on the fix is 10%. If any fix cuts the power or economy more than 10%, I think I'd take a buyout. It would be nice if TDI owners could test drive a sample vehicle with the fix and make the determination if they want to go through with it.

Once this all gets figured out, I will be replacing it with a B8.5 Allroad with sport interior. Preferrably monochrome (body colored flares, etc.), but if I can't find one, then I will monochrome it myself.

Thinking about picking up a $1500 beater Honda and parking my MK5 Jetta until buyback time. DPF failure or Total Loss accident would be disastrous. I still owe about 9500 on the car (bought 2.5 years ago).

PKhoury... Did the mods merge your "what car would you buy?" thread with this one? All this talk of staying on topic and we are not allowed to have a separate thread in the "general discussion forum" about cars we would consider.. Man.. tough crowd..
