Hello,
I emailed a few of our vendors to see if I could lower the prices of a turbo for myself and others. I got this response from AARodriguez:

For a group buy of 3 or more people
We can do free tune upgrades or
save $100 off a new tune and turbo package

I am still waiting to see what Kerma will offer, please let me know you're interested with a reply to this thread. Thank you!

Sincerely,

Is this $100 off his $849 price? Cause I already have the stage three tune.
2.5" exhaust from turbo to bumper, unrestricted egr delete. :D

For noobs, like myself, who would like to know more about any group buy options resulting in a discount can you please tell us what the difference between the VNT-15 and the VNT-17.

Or even what VNT stands for?

I will figure it out on my own eventually, but it would save me a lot of time. Also, might be able to convince me it is something I need now, otherwise I'll drive the current turbo till it blows up :D

Variable Nozzle Turbo it's what is on these cars and almost all newer diesel engines that have turbos

The Garrett VNT-17 is one of the best upgrades you can do to these cars. Add a tune with it and it's like having a brand new car

the 17 is larger than the 15 and supports hp up to 190-200hp

I believe the 17 is what the Euro PD150s have from the factory

Your car has a KP39(Borg-Warner) which is similar to the vnt15s that are on the ALH cars

Thank you for the explanation. I feel a little less in the dark now. Other than the tune is it a "bolt in" upgrade?

Yes it is completely plug and play. The only thing you may need is an adapter to connect the charge hose to the intake.

If you decide to go this route PM me and I can hook you up on an adapter. I have one or two laying around that I'll let go super cheap

There is no way you are getting 200HP out of a VNT17. About 160WHP is about the maximum it can do.

If your BEW has the EGR cooler in place you'll also need a different lower EGR cooler pipe. The OE one is too short for the VNT-17.

Mine still has the EGR cooler. Is that lower pipe something I could get off the shelf, or does it need to Looks like I might be getting myself an early Christmas Present :p. I will probably kick myself for not getting it now if my turbo goes in the next while. Lol

Read post #5 http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?p=4888027#post4888027 he had his A/C on during his dyno too. Contact him for more information about is set up/results

He has dynoed his car

There are several that easily get more than 160hp. such as idparts http://post.idparts.com/most-popular/81-text/tech/7-vnt17-vs-kp39-tdi

200hp might be stretching it but 190hp from a 17 is capable without going into disaster area.

I would be interested in a turbo + tune discount.

Would we all have to pick the same tune? Mine is stock, and I don't want to upgrade the injectors or pump so would most likely do a stage 2.0 or 2.5.

Is yours not a PD? If so, you don't have to worry about the pump or the injectors

It is a PD. Its my commuter vehicle, driven about 150 miles a day on highway.

Any recommendations on which stage would be best?

I would suggest a 1.5 tune. I averaged 55mpg with my 1.5 tune driving 140 miles daily all interstate. A 1.5 and vnt-17 will be like a whole new car

I have a stage 4 tune right now. My right foot has been pretty heavy so I haven't calculated mpg lately.

OP looks like you have enough interest for a group buy!

If you're doing an intake cleaning, then yes. If you're doing just a turbo replacement, it's 10x quicker to pull it out from the bottom. Just undo the dogbone and prop it on the frame

man this is tempting. how does the stock clutch hold up to the turbo with a decent tune. I upgraded to the DLC 1019 injectors already. Will those be useless if i upgrade to the vnt 17?

what other upgrades are recommended.

Stock clutch WON'T hold up unless you're willing to NOT use the added power. Um, well, OK, the clutch in my car will slip if I nail it while in 5th; for some reason the clutch in my wife's car, more miles and feels more aged, isn't showing any slipping, though I can only image that it's a matter of time (have new clutch ready to go, just have to get it on my schedule).

My research revealed that even DLC520s will work with the vnt17 (I believe it was IBW who informed me of this- I was thinking that the DLC520s would be the safety valve keeping me from hitting the slippery slope!:) not sure if the way mine are set, only stage 1, whether that would still be the case or not. DLC1019s would be fine/great: I was wanting to go with those nozzles but I promised my wife we could improve on fuel mileage, which is something that the DLC520s are capable of.

Oh, I'm running Malone stage 2 in both my cars. Very happy with the overall characteristic of the cars now: great fuel mileage and performance that'll now get the job done.

Ya i was afriad the clutch wouldnt be able to hold it. With the eng trans setup it ends up being easier to just yank both out to split the trans instead of doing it in the car. I dont have access to a hoist. What power do you figure your puting down

It's "easy" to pull the trans (that's my understanding, as I haven't done it yet- going to do one with a local guru, after which I'll contemplate doing the clutch on my car).

Wife's car dyno'd at 118hp and 258 ft-lbs on a DynoJet. I think my car runs better, though the numbers might not show up as such: more so I suspect it's her turbo's spiking a bit that makes it feel like less power- mine just pulls extremely hard, effortlessly and smoothly (compliments of its prior life being driven by light-footed women- yeah, kind of contrary to what a lot of folks might believe, though the intake was extremely clogged, so the turbo really didn't see a lot of action1).

Max tune is a stage 3 (according to AARodriguez, for the DLC520s). I selected the DLC stage 1 clutch through Cascade German Auto Parts (Bora Parts) because it'll hold this max while still have a stock feel (need an easy clutch for the wife- and, I need both cars to match so that's what I'll be stuffing in my car as well).

I'm here because I'm contemplating what replacement I'll go with for the turbos: the vnt15s do seem to have sufficient punch as I see it; the wife doesn't care, only cares about fuel mileage. Wife's turbo is passing a bit of oil, not too much, but it ain't getting any younger (160k miles).
