Vnt 17/22

I found out that I have an oil leak coming from my turbo yesterday. The mechanic (dealership) said it would probably need to be replaced. As much as I was hesitant to upgrade the turbo because of the cost, now I have the perfect excuse. I have an 04 BEW Jetta, and I'm wondering which turbo I should go with. I plan on keeping the car mostly stock, other than a tune.

The VNT 17 is often recommended, and I'm sure it's a great replacement, but I'd like some more opinions. Any other turbos that will work well with just a tune? If they're still available, I'm interested in upgrading to the VNT 17/22. Does anyone know if it's possible to find these?

Also, I'm only justifying the upgrade if the turbo absolutely has to be replaced. Will an oil leak inevitably lead to turbo failure, or is it possible to replace some a gasket or seal and fix the problem?

Thanks in advance!

I know kerma had a few 17/22 left and I'm sure other venders do too. I have a vnt17 but still am looking for more out of my car. The vnt17 is nice and it's has changed the car. I just want more.

Thanks for the reply. I called kerma today. Looks like they're out. They do have a new turbo from Borg Warner called the S7 though. Anyone had any experience with this turbo?

Just trying to be helpful. Use the search. Plenty of info already on here. Especially turbos.

Horchatavt, do you need the replacement turbo in your hands, or can you wait to pull yours out and have it rebuilt? If you don't need to R&R the same day, there are money saving options available.

My car is a daily driver, so it would be hard for me to wait more than a few days for a rebuild. I know there might be places that can do it within that amount of time. Do you have any suggestions?

There is no place I know of with that turn around time.

EDIT: I did not see the above post when I made mine. Frans is a very well respected reseller and his turbos are top shelf quality and his prices are unbeatable.

Read the fine print, rebuilt turbos have all new internal parts including the 360* thrust washer (read: new CHRA) and nothing made from Chinesium.

VNT 17/22s aren't a good option. period. You're taking a relatively small turbine and fitting a larger compressor, then being charged roughly a 50% mark up when there are much better turbos in that price range.

Darkside has a good table that shows boost, build RPM, power, and turbo sizing.
http://www.darksidedevelopments.co.uk/products/darkside-gtb-turbo-kit-for-1-9-8v-tdi-engines.html

A VNT20 will make boost around the same RPM, is a considerable improvement, and doesn't involve dismantling turbos. A 1756 @ 28 PSI will dominate either of those, is as far as you should go on a stock head/head bolts, and is still nearly 500 bucks cheaper than a 17/22 here http://www.fixmyvw.com/garrett-gtb1756-turbo-769701-5003s/

With the savings you can buy a better flowing exhaust manifold. If you want an improvement, don't compromise for the sake of simplicity. Swapping from a VNT17 to a 17/22 is just throwing money down the drain.

I agree with you but I don't think anyone has mentioned swapping out a vnt17 for a 17/22

If you're looking for a basically stock engine then just use the VNT 15 from an ALH. Slightly bigger than the crappy kp39 and can be had for a reasonable price.
