Ventectomy -- New guy\'s first mod!

It took about 45 seconds. No, it's true! Less than a minute in below freezing temps.

The photos posted in a thread on this subject were fantastic, and a tremendous help.

I can't find the thread right now, but whoever posted the pics, I say THANKS!

Just think in the time it took you to pull that at work you would have travelled 6.428 miles, what took you so long?

Fueling will be much easier from here on out almost like single point refueling! The hassles that tab create remind me of the fuel tanks on King Airs, PITA since they foam up so bad.

You know, my '86 A2 Gasser had the vent tab, I never thought about removing it. I did develop a way to defeat it, with the spring that wraps around the pump nozzle I could press it in and top off.

Gee, 32 MPG sounds so lame now, but it was great for the darn near 10 years and 250k I had that little car. I gave it to my brother because Icould not bear the thought of someone abusing it.

But, I digress.

P.S. The X is still a pain to fuel, as 13,000 lbs can take awhile to pump. Believe it or not, overwing fueling can be done. I'd hate to be the guy hand pumping 1800 gallons!

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Diesel foams up when you fuel the car.

The vent is a leftover (crossover) from the gasoline engines that require "Evaporative Emissions Systems". Since a TDI/Diesel does not utilize this system removing the "Vent" allows for the full capacity of the tank to be utilized allowing you to fit an additional 2-3 gallons into the standard tank. The vent also helps to settle the foam alowing for a quicker filling of the tank.

one thing to check for - golfstream's drain hose was wedged between the fender liner and the bumper trim . . . if the hose doesn't come out easily grab the hose and give it a tug - don't pull on the whole unit . . .

That was my first mod on my MKIV in Octobre after reading this forum of Fred's. [Bad english?

Hence, I showed 3 people how to vent pushing in the tab during fill-ups on their TDi's. Of the [3] individuals, [2] told me it was dangerous and would kill the motor. They informed me it was a huge risk. They in turn refused to vent during fill-ups. Both individuals can't do more than 500 miles on a fill-up and never put more than 12 gallon. [this is when their fuel light refill has been activated].

The third individual is an architect, Tdi owner since mid 90's and drives a Golf 2000 TDi. Met him at a Chase bank and discussed our cars. He drives a lot. Needless to say I showed him this trick, gave him this forum and he wrote me back last week. He thanked me for the extra 100 miles on each tank.

Now he want's UpSolute, Van Aaken, Real Street Springs, and .205 injectors. All in that order. I guess I sell a good story.

So, one in three will listen around these parts to these very useful forum suggestions. The other two are clueless, I.T. dudes who read way too much science fiction, ...and perhaps subscribe to Popular Mechanics ordering secret decoder rings on the last black and white pages of that magazine.

Has anyone experienced inconsistent fillups after ventectomy when letting the pump click off by itself?

Before ventectomy, it was amazing how consistent my fill ups were in terms of volume. Because of my driving route and habit of filling up right after the low fuel chime would sound, I'd sometimes get 2 or 3 consecutive fills that would all click off within a quarter gallon of each other.

Now, sometimes the tank gobbles a lot of fuel and sometimes not. Same pump, same slow setting. I know the true acid test is to fill up carefully until the level of fuel is visible in the filler pipe, but man, it's cold out there to be standing there doing that!

Of course, I have no intention of reinstalling the vent guts, just wondering if anyone else has the same experience. My mileage graph now looks like peaks and valleys and I think it's because sometimes I get a lot of fuel in the tank and sometimes not.

Does anyone know if there are instructions like this for the MK3 Jetta? Or is it basically the same procedure as the MKIV?

Its still very consistent for me . . . and yeah I still fill to the top - even in the single digit amounts.

I always use the slowest setting on the pump . . . and the time it takes to bring it up to teh top is pretty short . . . not too bad . . .

and my mileage graph is pretty - i'd say Extremely - consistent before and after the ventectomy was performed. . . .

Now that i've slowed down about 5 mph my mileage has jumped (for the good)

doing my part to piss off the speeders and at the same time decrease the use of petroleum oil and increase the use of biodiesel.

the better the mileage I get the more I can afford to use higher % of domestic renewable diesel fuel!

Trying to do the ventectomy but can't get the white piece to pop out from the instructions. Am I missing something? I push in on the white tab but nothing happens. I also tried pushing the vent switch or what ever it's called that's attached but still no luck. Thanks

Just to double check, if you are filling up and have the pump on by itself, it will click off once full, even after the ventectomy? I don't want fuel running down the side of my ride (or me)!!

I haven't done the ventectomy but I have a question since I'm still a newbie.

The nozzle that I use to fill is the huge truck nozzle. It's at a truck stop. It barely fits in the VW's neck. If filled up until the first click, then I topped off a little. Wound up spitting diesel when it was done. Do the big nozzles inadvertantly push the vent button when you stick it in or do I still have to manually vent?

Or maybe the diesel spitting out was because of the vent not being pushed?

If so then, I'll do the surgery and not have to worry.

Using the big nozzle does NOT push in the vent. Even after doing the ventectomy, you may still have issues with the big nozzle since it will partially block the air trying to get out of the tank. If you can, avoid the large nozzles.

Most Truck stops have a "RV" pump because diesel Rec Vehicles use the car sized filler necks. Look to see if theres one at your truck stop, they sometimes are not labled.

Yep.. well, it's not necissary, but you can do it to put more fule in your tank

On mine, it did't just pop out either: I had to push in on the button as I pryed the tabs... and broke one of them off

But It has stayed in place, so I'm gunna call it a non issue.

LOL!!!!! Tell me about it!!!!!!!!!

Every time we get a new guy/girl in, we tell him/her to fuel nice and slow on the KingAir, as it foams up. They think we are just messin with them, so they go full speed and end up wearing it!
Also, how about those lovely original Beaver fuel tanks? You are merrily fuelling away, and all of a sudden, BLAM!!! It overflows.. (If you aren't paying super careful attention).
The worst thing I ever had to do was fuel a Dash-8 overwing in the pounding rain.....

Anyway, back on topic.. The Ventectomy is a good mod.

Just finished a ventectomy on my '05 Jetta wagon. Once I took a look at GeWilli's pictures it was really easy. I was having trouble locating the white tab - its on the bottom of the "finger". You have to get down below the level of the filler to see it. Thanks!
