I just purchased a 2014 Jetta TDI w/ Premium and Im not sure what the "vent" is that's located where a row of convenience buttons usually is. It's right in front of the gear shift boot under the A/C controls.

Know exactly what you're referring to, don't know what it is.

I've not actually seen this other than photos, but it looks like something you would stick coins in for tolls or parking. Convenience feature?! :) I've got the buttons so know what you are talking about, but not sure what it is. Sorry!

I can't even find a picture of it on the internet. Im sure it's not for coins. It looks more like a air/filter vent.

I was told it's for cards - business or credit I guess. We pretty much ignore it. :)

God, you guys are all wrong. How can forum users be so stupid. Those slots are to collect lint and dirt - just like you belly button. Once those slots get filled, it is time to trade in the car and buy a new one.

You guys can be so dumb sometimes....

Could it be replaced easily with the row of convenience buttons or would that require a different trim?

Exactly what I was thinking. And for hard core enthusiasts, you can do the "expanded dirt collection" mod. This involves dremmeling out the bottoms of the slots to directly port the dirt underneath the console area, thus increasing your dirt storage capacity, which in turn increases your range before trade-in.

Pretty sure it's simply a filler panel instead of the blank button fillers (which I have). Saves them a couple of bucks a car. Doesn't seem like much until you multiply it out by the number of cars built (150,000 they sold in 2012). Gotta pay for that exec's pool somehow.

The owners manual calls it a card holder... Not sure who came up with this idea but I agree it is pretty much worthless...
