Just got VCDS and my first autoscan is giving me expected fault codes p2002 and p0401. But the dates given are 5 years ago (before I bought the car). I expected the date to be the last time the fault was detected. Not so?

the dates/times are not correct or able to be corrected on the CJAA.
clear them and see if they come back.

One of the things that anyone should do the first minute they get vcds. Lots of people have come on here and made changes but didn't make that initial scan and save and so had trouble reverting back to original if needed. Always a good idea to have an initial scan saved somewhere.

I'm so thrilled that the VCDS has paid off already... output testing and KOEO testing led me to replace the N18 EGR valve... and so far it seems to have taken care of both codes. Time will tell! Hopefully I haven't just jinxed myself.
