I've read a few different threads when it comes to replacing the valve cover gasket and some people do use sealant when they change the gasket however i have spoken to darksidedevelopments they said you don't have to use any sealant, they just told me to make sure the cylinder head surface was clean before installing the new gasket and that all bolts are tightened up in the correct sequence and to 10NM.
I know VW don't sell the gasket as a single item they sell it as a whole with the rocker cover and new bolts. I know the covers can warp over time making it harder to get a good seal but also i think the main issue is the cheap gaskets that people usually end up buying are poorer quality compared to a genuine OEM one. In my personal opinion i think it's better to get a genuine OEM rocker cover complete with a new gasket and bolts. I know it's a lot more expensive but I think the overall quality of the item is a lot better.
