got a chance to buy a 2006 jetta auto..I believe a package 1, red with tan interior...160,000 miles had the dmf replaced but no other records of service. Nice clean car...so probably no cam kit or timing belt done not to mention other issues not addressed...wants 7,800.00 but just called me and asked what's my best price?? opinions?? Thanx! I have owned a 2001 jetta tdi for around 4 years and love it..have the rocket chip and upgrade nozzles...great car. I own a shop (classic car restorations) so I'm o/k with most service here..also the car is about 15 minutes from my house....private seller kinda, he bought it to sell from the original owner..did a car fax and shows a one owner car with no issues... list service from a local dealer with regular oil changes but that's it... called the dealer for more info but to no avail!

If you have been reading, you know the two big ones are cam and followers, and the DMF, for both the DSG and the manual. Not a fan of autos, but, others are and find them reliable.

All turned back to VW. Now a 2017 Hundai Tuscon. Not a single squalk in 10k miles.
The car is worth a cam inspection. Twenty minutes will tell the story. Timing belt and associated parts are coming up anyway. Whether they were changed at about 90k miles or are original, just figure on replacing.

Based on a good cam outcome and assuming the car has evidently been cared for I'd offer somewhat less than the asking price and see where it goes. Not a deal breaker if a bad cam either as you then knock at least $2K off their price. Either they deal or they don't.

Truthfully I'd pray for a bad cam in an obviously nice car. An easy repair and the belt is due anyway. You could easily end up with a nice car at a very good price.

I'd say price is pretty good if cam checks out ok. If cam is bad, then ask for another $1K off their asking price and do timing belt as well. It will take someone without experience about an hour to fully inspect the camshaft, 15-20 mins to remove the valve cover (first time takes longer) about 30 mins to inspect rolling the engine over to see the whole cam, and 15 mins or so to reinstall the valve cover.

The price sounds about right. 06 model year cars are now 7 model years old and quickly coming on 8 MY old. The milage is high enough that is will scare off most not TDI specific buyers. Cars with about 100k typically go for closer 10K+. My most recent 06 BRM purchase was a 50 K milage car, almost perfect body, but had "head issues". I was able to get it for a somewhat under the said $7,800 price of the car you are looking at.

The BRM's are nice cars. Especially with a tune. If it is a loaded early 06 package 2 car, the $7,800 price is almost a no brainer. The easiest way to tell the difference is leather vs pleather, leather sterring wheel, the climate control, system and the cluster. Spend the time to see if it is a package 2 car. You will not regret buying one of those.

The BRM's are great cars. For a time, my 06 had a higher KBB value than I paid for it.

Thanx guys for all the info...it is a package 1 car..I will see if I can "borrow" the car to inspect in my shop (cam ect...) and also put it up on my lift to inspect for the dmf upgrade that was supposedly done, that is if there is any evidence possible of it being done... thanx.... really! by the way the cel light is on and I only have the rosstech key usb for the a4 and earlier (don't believe it will work for the a5's right?)....can I check the codes with my scan gauge ii I have in my 2001 jetta?? I also have the obii scan tool/reader but not sure it will work with the 2006 tdi vw's

The scan tool will work on an '06. You probably get more info with the VW system, but you can check codes and clear them with the scan tool.

I'd figure on egr soon also. With only dmf done it has plenty going soon. Value dives crazy nearing 200k so you don't want to be deep into it. 150-200k cost me thousands in vw flaws I never recouped in fuel savings. Fun car to drive though.
