There is a VAGCOM that works for both a 2005 TDi Passat as well as a 2009 Audi Q7 TDi. Can anyone direct me to where I can purchase this software? I suppose it goes on a laptop. Thanks.

To work on both, you will need one of the HEX+CAN models. You will probably want the USB one because many modern laptops do not have a serial port. Look here:

Yep HEX-CAN+USB is the only way to go! Works great

The detail that has not come out clearly here is that:

(1) The Vag-Com software is from http://www.ross-tech.com/ (called VCDS now) and is a free download.

(2) The VagCom cable, called Hex+Can, with a USB connector, is something you must pay big bucks to get, about US$300. The software can be used with generic OBD cables, but will only serve to display the basic OBD stuff, and will not give access to most of the sophisticated VW stuff, including things like setting preferences and resetting alarm codes.

Starting with version 5, I believe, VCDS will only work with the Key, Hex, or MicroCan series cables. Any generic cable that runs the latest software is an illegal copy.

This is correct, but a generic cable will (usually) work with VCDS-Lite. However, VCDS-Lite will not work with CAN Bus cars (2005.5+).

Have Fun!
