I had my filter canister already open so there was no way to go back, so I forged on without VAG. I very very slowly refilled the canister with the new filter in place allowing the fuel to soak the filter and displace the air. Once the canister was nearly full I placed the top, caught any overflow with paper towels and buttoned it up. Car started without a hiccup.
I was considering purchasing from Ross-Tech but I'm running an OSX-only MAC.
In case anyone was wondering why I opened it up before I started looking for someone, it was because in previous searches I had not read of the potential issues of not priming the filter. I did a search yesterday to refresh my memory and came across the debate. ah well.
