Vagcom can only access 1/2 my control modules

Hello Can anyone suggest where to start looking for the following problem ? I am using a genuine fully licenced copy of VCDS 805.3 but can only access some modules. The cable & software I am sure are fine as the modules are either accessed straight away or a great deal of trouble/don't work so I suspect there is a damaged wire somewhere - the car runs OK & nothing seems wrong. It is a Mk IV Golf R32 (found you all via Graeme76) it used to have a double DIN Delta stereo in it which I replaced with an MFD Vagcom has worked fine for ages. The K Line from the stereo is not connected hence the no comms errrors.

When I try to open all the common Modules this is the result -

Engine - VCDS goes in but no fault codes - too many comms errors to continue
Cent Elect - No Response From Controller (NRFC)
Aux Heat - NRFC
Cent Locks - NRFC
Xenon Range - NRFC
Auto - na
Air Bags - OK
CAN Gateway - 1 Fault Found: 01304 - Radio 49-00 - No Communications
Navi - NRFC
Radio - NRFC
ABS Barkes - in but no fault codes - too many comms errors to continue
S Wheel - NRFC
AWD - OK
Inter Monitor - NRFC
Auto-HVAC - OK
Instruments - 1 Fault Found: 01304 - Radio 49-00 - No Communications
Immo - go to 17 (Instruments) in German
C Conv - NRFC

If anyone can suggest where to start looking it would be much appreciated

Thanks no both K1 & K2 test as OK as I wondered this too ! Do all the diagnostics run down the K Line (Pin 7) of the OBD connector ?

It is normal to get a no response from controller message when running an autoscan. The autoscan file contains predefined list of all modules present in the MKIV platform. Your car will not have all modules installed. It varies and depends on the way the car is configured.

As for the communication issues, please look at FAQ listing:

Thanks, I had already tried disabling my AV etc. I understand it will skip modules if not fitted so do you think its just the CC unit it is really having issues with as Engine I can/can't get into but the CC seems really stuck ?

Hi, Yes it definitely has a CC module which I have previously accessed & programmed several times via Vag-com. Standard spec on these cars is AC, heated seats, Xenon lights, rain sensitive wipers, autodim mirror & AWD. Only options were sunroof, cruise, & stereo (Delta 6 or MFD) Mine has cruise as a factory fit option & I added the MFD (was Delta 6)

Looking at the list I can access Left/Right Lights but can't get into Xenon range which seems strange as list suggests I should get 55 instead (If equipped with factory Xenon HID, non-US only) ?

In fact, sometimes I can "access" the CC module but the words are all garbled as if the data is corrupted on its way to VCDS

Modules are split between K1(7) and K2(15). Without a wiring diagram in front of me, I can't be sure which modules are on which bus. But even if I had that, I think both diagnostic buses are working - so I am at a loss. I'm going to refer this thread to some of our top tech people to see if they have an idea.

Hi Bruce, Yes it seems to be an intermittent problem. I bought the cable from Ilexa & it tests OK on other cars so I don't think its the cable. Am running VCDS on a Thinkpad X60s have disabled Avast etc.

Only other thought I have then - especially since all works on other cars - is that a module in the car is messing the communications on the diagnostic bus. Only way to find out which one would be to pull fuses or unplug modules one at a time to see if things improve.

Not a very scientific approach to resolving this is it.

Hi Bruce,

Will try this at the weekend - do you any suggestion where to start & which fuses to pull to speed things up ? Do you think it would be worth disconnecting the battery ?

You could try resetting the whole system by disconnecting the battery and holding the leads together to make sure all the capacitors in the control modules bleed off.

As to which modules to start with? My suggestion is take a wiring diagram and start with the most convenient. Modules known produce troubles are the ABS and Airbag in certain model years but I don't recall problems like that in the MKIV. So, I really do not have a starting point for you.
