I can't access the "instruments", it says it can't connect, but all the other modules (engine, airbags, ABS, etc...) work fine

Any ideas?

PS: I have a 99 1/2 model that doesn't have the CAN bus going to the instrument cluster. Is that why?

volks27 are you sure you have a 99.5 and not a pre-99.5 99 model?

Older models did not have a cluster with an interface like the 99.5-2003 model Golf/Jetta and 98-on NB.

It's a MK4 made in germany, march 1999. Maybe off topic, it's a gti 2.0L

You think I should be able to communicate with the instrument cluster?

wow! Thanks for the answer! I did take a look and both my connectors at the cluster look clean and tight.

I think MK4s that are built before May 1999 don't have the CAN bus or whatever what's needed to communicate with the cluster.

The instrument cluster in the Mk.3 cars is not diagnostic capable.

All Mk.4 clusters should "talk". However, Mk.4 clusters are notorious for bad connections at the plug for the insturment cluster. The wires attach to the plug with a "scotch lock" kind of connection. Remove your cluster and check this.
