VAG COM Musts?

I would hold off on the window down addition. I set my brothers a5 jetta to operate the sunroof and windows both open and close. I thought about things for a while and decided that it could be too easy for the remote button to be pressed in a pocket. Another problem is if I ran into someone else that had the same remote coding as my car (has happened with Fords in the past not with VW yet). I went back and disabled the roll down feature but left the roll up.

Well not to be downing vw or anything but think about it like this. You drove a ford, now I don't know the technical chances of that actually happening but it's an extremely slim one, so you got very lucky. But unfortunate at that. However now you drive a vw. And the amount of fords compared to vws on the road is exponential. So honestly I wouldn't worry about it.

Has anyone documented the Key Fob windows down. I was doing some VAG COM updates and couldn't find that. All the documentation I found show that you can enable windows up/down from the key in the door, but not on the key fob.

If someone has details, I'd appreciate it.

Ok, so I have one question. I'm fairly forgetful, so already a couple of times I have turned off the car, removed the ignition, but left the headlight to on. For some reason the car interprets this as an indication that want to leave some of the lights on. Is there any way I can get it to shut off automatically after a while? Is that the coming home feature? I know that it will happen again for certain, and I don't want to waste the battery.

You have to go into 09 cent electronics or convenience ( I can't remember) and click on adaptation. You'll see a drop down bar and you need to go to comfort controls I think.

Not a chance of this happening. Accidental presses yes but duplicated remote codes not very likely.

Yup, Address 09 - Central Electronics:
Comfort Operation (via remote control) found in Adaptation. From the drop down list, choose 1 (on) and save... works just as advertised

I have had it happen on two separate occasions on Fords. One was my fathers secretary's explorer to a bronco, their remotes would work for each other. The other was still with the bronco but I dont recall the other car. Their remotes have a further range than vw remotes but I would think that there are quite a few cars out there that have the same remote as yours. I dont know the workings of how the remotes operate whether it is just a rf signal or if it is sending some specific message on that frequency. Another possibility is when I am home at my parents, we have a bowl of vw keys. Someone could grab the wrong key and be rolling down my windows while looking at one of the other cars. In the household we have one 99, two 02s, one 06, one 10 and another 10 should arrive mid May (all but the 99 are TDIs). Plus at thanksgiving or christmas whichever one my parents get there are an additional 4 vws at the house as well (mothers family all TDIs).

It's still pretty unlikely. The key fobs generate and transmit a pseudo-random number every time you press a button, and the computer uses the same number generator, accepting any of the previous 256 numbers. There are so many numbers in that sequence that you are unlikely to ever overlap with another car. Those early systems probably had a smaller number of bits in their number generator.

For more, you can read the How Stuff Works article: http://auto.howstuffworks.com/remote-entry2.htm

What is the window trick all about?

Is it lowering the windows with the remote?

If so, I don't think you need Vag Com to do that. The salesman who sold me my car showed me how to do this with the fob from outside. I can't recall exactly what he did, I will call him back to find out.

Not everybody has it from the dealer, since some dealers will probably activate the options, while others won't (or don't know how to). Mine did not have that coded in, but with somebody's VAG-COM I was able to change the coding. You press and hold the key fob buttons to do it.

Is it possible to completely disable traction/stability control with VAG-COM? I read that pressing the button does not completely disable it. At the track it still cuts power.

I had a problem with VWs first attempts at traction control on the MKIVs but the system on these cars is so advanced that I havent found any instance that it held me back so far and yes I do drive very hard on country roads.

How many times have you had your car out on a track?

Those two things can be changed in the MFI, well at least I was able to do it. I changed the others (excp blk bttns) you mentioned except for the auto lock, and ennjoy them everytime stepping in the car.
Could you post the process to change the turn indicator from 3 to 5 through the MFI?

Thank you.

I took JSW to North American Motorsports in CT last week to use their VagCom. I had them do the following things (which I highly recommend):

- Turned on the windows down via remote feature
- Changed the turn indicator from 3 to 4
- Turned on the coming home feature. Hit the high beams after you turn the car off, and the headlights turn on for 30 seconds or so.

I left the seatbelt chime on, i like the noise reminding my passengers when they don't put their seatbelt on. I also left on the horn when the car locks, for now at least.

Big shout out to North American Motorsports in Vernon CT. They took my car into the back and did everything for me, no charge (though I did try).

what is MFI? is that exclusive to the Jetta?

my Golf has the MFD (multi-function display), but it doesn't allow me to disable the beep when locking doors.
maybe i need to locate a VAG-COM for this?

I don't think you can. You can only turn in on or off from there. You need VAGCOM to change the actual number of blinks.
