What type of lap top do I need to run the Vag-Com. I have seen the spec. on the VAG-Com site but where and what type of computer will do the job? Im looking for the cheapest lap top available just to run the vag com. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Might want to take a look at this thread. That Panasonic CF-25 has a buyitnow price of $169 on E-bay so you'd be in under $200 inc. shipping.

Minimum computer would be anything with an RS-232 that can run Win 95. That is it. The program is neither complex nor is it big.

My first Vag Com computer was an Epson 486 SLC 33 monochrome with 8 MB of memory...Since the resolution was 640 x 480, I had one big Vag Com display.

Although VAG-COM will probably run on a 486 with 8MB, please bear in mind that we recommend a P-100 with 16MB, and anything less than that is unsupported.

Ok, that being said, how slow can we go before the program becomes unusuable? There are 25mhz 486SXes and 100mhz 486DX4s tablet computers on ebay just *screaming* to become VAGCOM boxes. :)

I used to run Vag-Com on a 75 Pentium laptop. It ran but was quite slow switching between screens. I would say it likely would run on a 486 but you would require a lot of patience.

If you are running on a slow computer, how long before the information gets processed? Or is CPU speed not a factor? The reason I asked is for the 'real' time data. But then again I don't know if the port speed makes a difference too. I borrowed a Vag-com and played around with it. I saw a setting for the trottle. So I stepped on the pedal and then let go. I did notice a slight delay for the numbers to refresh.

There is definitely a delay in the display of the info. I think the delay is due to the video card though, not the CPU. A 1 MB video card running Win98 set as high graphics was pushing the limit of the card.
