This machine is a bit temperamental, sometimes has startup messages of "Running Gear Fault" or "Exhaust: workshop" which generally disappear the next time it's used. Something different now.

On Friday: normal. On Sunday: low power, can just about do 50MPH on highway uphills (far from normal) and significant engine vibration when under any load (smooth when running downhill). Today; no engine vibration but power still low.

VCDS log below, taken just before today's run. Some of the codes may be old, I do not recall when I last cleared them.

Would much appreciate advice from anyone familiar with this engine. Thanks.

Start by taking a log of measured value block 23 in both ECUs.

You can do them both at the same time by using address 31, it allows you do retrieve codes, watch live data and perform basic settings in both ECUs simultaneously.

So, in address 31 "Engine-Other," go to measured values, block 23, top block will be bank 1, 2nd block bank 2's readings. Start at idle, put it in gear, go for a quick spin around the block and hit wide open throttle at some point. Let's see how the injector BIP readings change with engine load and RPM.

(this may be a near-duplicate post.. something went wrong with the previous attempt)

I don't see the ability to use address 31, (no data from that setting), ore "engine-other". I do have a log file from block 23, will post a bit below in next post. I could email the CSV file to you - would be happy to pay for your time

Cleared DTCs before today's run. The only significant DTCs to reappear are shown below. No shuddering today, power somewhat better but below normal

Very odd. I've seen a couple cars with a single injector with super high readings like that, but to have all of them reading super high is very unusual.

Makes me wonder if there's an injector harness issue with the shared ground, or a bad ground on the engine harness side.

Basic interpretation of the injector "beginning of injection period" measurements here: it's a measurement in microseconds of how much of a deviation it's taking the injector solenoids to close vs. the computer's mapped expectations for the conditions present. The computer assumes the solenoid is closed by watching for a spike in the current it's directly sending to each injector.

If the numbers are negative, that indicates the solenoids are closing faster than normal, which can indicate a loss of fuel pressure since the theory goes the injectors aren't having to fight as much pressure to fully close. If the numbers are positive, this can indicate healthy fuel pressure, or if the numbers are WAY too far positive (as in numbers approaching 100 or greater), this can mean there's more likely to be an injector problem with the solenoid or the wiring to it.

Being that ALL injectors in bank 1 are at some point maxing out the reading at 127 at some point, this is pointing to there likely being a shared wiring problem to them, also backed up by the fault codes stored for at least 2 injectors hitting their regulation limits. The ground side is shared between all the injectors on a bank. The computer sends power to each injector individually and directly to operate them.

So, lucky you, looks like you get to start tracking down wiring problems. Need to suss out if it's in the injector harness that lives inside the head or in the engine wiring harness somewhere.

Measured value block 18 might also shed some light on the injector situation. That block shows injector status in a digital-decimal form which I can decode.

You could do the same with that block, wide open throttle run logging 18, see if there's any other hints it gives us, but sometimes it's not at all helpful.

Just a thought but have you checked for any unusual cam wear? That wouldn't explain all the issues - some of them seem to indicate wiring issues (wet wiring shorting to other wires and to ground occasionally).
The turbo faults could be wiring caused of could indicate one of the turbos is crudded up and the VNT vanes are not adjusting correctly - this will also result in loss of power because of incorrect boost. If you can get at them, see if the VNT levers move freely.
Good luck.

The intermittent nature does make electrical seem likely. It's up on a lift now (though only a 10ft high garage so cannot lift very high) and will look harder in the next few days. I do notice the undertray has disappeared.. so perhaps more water in the area than normal. Looks quite clean.

The previous owner said the turbos would occasionally get sticky if it sat parked for too long - and run it hard to fix. I had a single incident about a year ago of low power coming out of a junction and black smoke behind - it recovered and nothing like that since. No significant smoke in the last few days.
There is still an occasional MFD warning "Exhaust: Workshop" which sets the MIL - yet the only MIL ON in the VCDS log is for the radio (third party head unit so not surprising) which is puzzling.

"Exhaust workshop" is for engine or transmission codes. Addresses 01, 02 (transmission) and 11. It's basically saying there's a fault that could affect emissions. Same thing as the check engine light.

Most common issue with these turbos is the external linkage corrodes and then begins to bind. Even the "Turbo Control Module defective" code is more often than not a mechanical limitation caused by corrosion in the linakges. But getting to the upper linkage in particular with the engine in situ is not easy.

It is supposed to be a part of annual maintenance/10k mile oil change intervals to apply the VW lubricating paste to the turbo linkage joints. And if that were infact religiously done, it goes a long, LONG way towards preventing turbo related issues on these. Just where those turbos are situated, they are much more prone to road grime that leads to their corrosion. They are very much exposed to the elements, much more so than 4 cylinders in other chassis and even the newer V6 diesels where the turbo is up top.

Thanks again. I have seen two of your posts on these turbos and it's very helpful information. On my initial look, I could not see them - I assume from underneath? I'll have more time over the weekend. Do you have any pictures of what the linkages look like? It's almost due for service though no warning light yet.

On the principle of fixing the obvious first, I'll replace the engine cover and see if it does any better before getting excited with wiring looms. It was a very wet day Friday when these issues started. I don't know when the cover disappeared - it is entirely possible Friday was the first wet drive since it fell off. Local VW dealer said there is just one replacement cover in North America.. it's on order. Centre cover is available from ebay (Europe) if VW don't have any - less important.
