How are things going with the urea injection? How many miles before refill? How big is the urea tank and how much are you paying for urea?

Most of us are still getting urea for free from the dealership via service through 30,000 miles. My dealership has been putting in approx 2.5 gallons every 10,000 miles, so the 5 gallon tank should last 20,000ish miles.

Yep, although I'm now at 38,600 miles so no more freebees.

The one time the dealership didn't refill it I ended up going just over 15,000 miles before the warning came on. Took it in and they filled it. After that I remembered to remind them to fill the tank at every service.

5 gallon tank which is about 15k miles for most people. There are filling stations at truck stops that pump it similar to fuel at nominal rates. You can purchase it at most auto parts stores for $10-15 per 2.5 gallon jug.

It works out to 0.13 cents per mile, after the first 30k miles since it is included in scheduled service. Seem insignificant for the benefits it provides.

Maybe we should take our cars in for 12,000, 24,000, and 35,999 mile extended oil, filter and DEF fluid services instead, if our highway mileage makes up over 80% of the miles traveled.

You mean, 29,999.

A person getting a lifetime of 48MPG in a 6 man passat on Fuelly won't have as much junk from burnt fuel in their motor oil as someone getting 38 MPG with a DSG. Oil contamination is a function of amount of fuel used/burnt that the additives in the oil can hold.

When 90% of the miles on my oil change are done at FWY conditions in light to non existent traffic conditions, extended oil changes are in line. Check out Rukings posts some time.

The 10k oil changes are to play it safe for the spirited drivers and Mario Andretti wannabes among us that hammer on the equipment or that drive abusively.

I'm an Old Man, hence, I drive like one. YMMV....

You have some very bizarre recommendations.

Back to urea discussion...

The car doesn't have space for 6 men. 4 men is about it. Do you strap two men on the roof of the car?
No Strap On's here! Or is it Snap Ons? Tools? Oiy... Men and their toys. Still waiting for veedub or compu to get grounded.... in a High Discharge sort of way.

Back to urea discussion...
Does it matter if you use an oil burner heater or a wood burner heater, the more material you burn, the more ash you have left over to remove. Oil removes or catches the by product of the burn.... the more fuel you burn per mile traveled, the more by product and residue you have from the burning of the fuel in your oil.

Drive a car hard, get the combustion hot, you create more NoX, and require more AdBlue Urea usage to clean the Nox filter, drive it more conservatively, use less urea, due to generating less Nox.

My thought process is that 10000 miles / 38 MPG = 263 gallons of fuel burnt with the corresponding amount of contaminants in the oil, for a DSG. If I average 48MPG in my 6 manual then 48 x 263 gallons of fuel = 12,631 miles to put the same amount of byproducts or contamination into the same 4.5 liters of oil that a DSG puts in 10,000 miles.

Since 12,000 is less that 12,631 miles on an oil change, I should be good. Same amount of fuel burned, same amount of contaminants in the oil, same TBN at the oil change.

;)

YMMV, I don't recommend extended oil changes for most people's driving techniques and MPG they get with their 6 manual, just what I get with mine, as my driving conditions are somewhat unique with so much highway driving. A good look at Tarbe's latest Blackstone results confirm what I suspected, low iron readings on 10k miles and still good TBN left at I believe 2.6, on a Mobil 1 ESP oil change at 10 k miles.

where are you getting a 10mpg difference from a DSG to a manual trans? Should only be a few mpg at most.

anyway, please SEARCH! These questions are all easily answered.

Because those with the 6M transmission are applying hypermiling techniques to get that mpg.

The DSG just does what it does consistently without skipping gears and we are driving more and worrying less.

^ thanks for the clarification. Well, at any rate, the urea should be pretty non relevant considering its low cost and infrequent need for refill no matter what trans you have.

No hypermiling techniques used on mine, certainly not hauling a mtn bike on a rack in back of my car, which cuts into the MPG average. I just keep the cruise control engaged as much as I can so that my GPS indicates I'm doing 64-65MPH, and let the MPG end up where ever it does.

Niner likes to compare his 6M under his driving conditions (ideal at 65mph?) to fuelly averages for DSG, which is closer to 38mpg. He neglects the driving conditions to achieve those averages. There is a 2012 6M owner at VW vortex that is happily getting 30mpg too.

Figures dont lie!!
but
Liers always figure!!

At a press conference in 1966, Lyndon B Johnson told the press that we will now embark on our new mission, and NASA will send a space craft to the Sun. One of the young press reporters asked, "Sir, Wont it burn up?" To which he replied, "No, We will just go a night."

So just mix a little truth into any lie and its good to go.

liars/it's

secondly, *** are you talking about? how did we get from discussing someone's mpg to lyndon johnson and a sun mission?

if niner wants to putt putt around at 65mpg to get the best possible mpg, so what? that is his business, his hobby, his little joy in life. So what if he is proud of it?

gee...I figured from the beginning that this thread about a urine by-product would turn into a pi$$ing contest...

I like Niner and I don't think his driving style is specifically hypermiling or trying to achieve good fuel economy. I think his normal driving route yields very good FE.

Who would be "Happy" with those numbers? Can you substantiate this claim?

Hey... y'all need to know that urea may be close to recycled beer, but what it does in the passat for your tank average MPG's regardless how spirited or grandfatherly your driving technique, for the most part, it's better than most jetta's, jsw's and golfs.
BTW, I expect Veedub or compu to post up some grandfatherly mpg numbers today of at or over 45MPG from their last fillup coming back from Ypsi... so you can jump on him instead about his drafting, dodging and hypermiling techniques instead of me. :p

I wish I could brag about how low my urea consumption is too, but, truth be known, it's so infrequent.... we'd wait years to compare numbers.

Yeah, where are those MPG figures from their trip? I saw 46.x reported on the trip North I think.

If I run across the user at Vortex, I'll link it. I'm not a member there and do not read the threads as frequently.

42.6 MPG heading west, 45.7 MPG heading east. Cruise set at 74 MPH, no drafting, A/C on, no hypermiling... in a hurry to get where we were going. Very impressed!

Urea consumption? I'm sure there was some. I saw 3 regens on our 1400 mile trip.
