I absolutely love how the aggressive my car looks with the OSRAM headlights on my Golf Wagon, but I just couldn't get over the fact that the HID lights had little improvement over the Halogen bulbs. I did some research on the European market and I found out the regulations to use 35w bulbs (D3S) and ballasts, the vehicle needs to be equipped with headlight washer fluid and auto-leveling. That's the reason why OSRAM went with 25w bulbs (D8S) and ballasts in order for the headlights to be certified for street use and to keep the cost down.

The D8S bulbs and ballast that comes with the OSRAM headlights are 25w. I did some research and I found out that you can upgrade the bulbs to 35w by changing the bulbs and the ballasts. The D8S bulbs projects approximately 2,000 lumen and D3S bulbs projects approximately 3,500 lumen.

I opted for the Morimoto XB 4300k D3S and ebay 35w OSRAM ballasts. The 35w OSRAM ballasts are more common in Kia, Hyundai, GM, Telsa, Jaguar, etc. The result is literally night and day difference!

I tried to take before and after pictures and the pictures does not do justice on the brightness comparison with the D8S and the D3S bulbs.

There's no drilling, no cutting, no modification and it is a 100% direct bolt on. The nice thing about the OSRAM bulb ring, you there's no bulb specific notch, it can be used between D3S and D8S! The Focus and Telsa Group had to drill the bulb to make a D8S notch for the bulb ring to accept the D3S bulb.

The only issue I had with the ebay OSRAM ballast cable is 90 degree angle and the stock OSRAM ballast cable is a straight angle.

If you want to upgrade your OSRAM ballasts, make sure the part number is either 10R-044663 or 10R-034663 and 35XT6-S-D3. Obviously make sure there's a 3 point mounting point on the ballast. Otherwise you can take the 4 point and swap the internals inside your 25w 3 point ballast.

I ended up upgrading the ballasts and bulbs in mine as well right after I got them. The 25w OSRAMs that come in the housings are better than the stock JSW/GSW housings but they leave a lot to be desired, especially for waht you're paying for the OSRAMs.

I know this is an old thread, anyone else do this upgrade? With the price im thinking about skipping hid replacements and going right to d8s led replacements for the projectors.

OP? JY BALLASTS hold up this long?

I haven't found any d8s LED replacement. The benefit to upgrade to d3s is significant and literally night and day improvement. You'll see the retaining ring for the bulb does not have a notch for a specific bulb which allows me to upgrade to d3s whereas most people who had a d8s had to motifiy the retaining ring to accept the d3s bulb.

I highly recommend to upgrade to 35w system. Everything is still working and shining bright and strong.

I am curious,

Do you have pictures of her at the night time with before and after?

I've switched everything I own from hid to led now. No light fade with old age, or color shift to worry about with replacment bulbs. No more huge ballasts to find a place to mount.
Been using this brand for years now.
HIKARI 2023 Future 30000LM H11/H8/H9 LED Bulbs, 65W Titanova LED, High Lumens LED Kit,6000K Cool White, IP68 Waterproof, Halogen Upgrade Replacement, H16 Foglight https://a.co/d/d8m5umW

Oldest set I have is 6 years old and still going strong. Put a set in my jetta a few months ago. Wouldn't ever go back to std bulbs or hid.

DeAuto LED makes an LED D3S which just so happened to show up at my house yesterday. I was able to install them this morning and they are night and day difference in the daylight. Eager to see how they perform at night.

Do you continue to use the ballast with the LED bulb? Details on how you were able to install it.

Same! I think de auto might be like a forum sponsor? But the website is scanty on details.

There are 2 or 3 options for led replacements, hard to decide which one to try and range from like 25$-200?.

So juat to put a fine point on it, you used the osram d8s ledhl102 headlights and the d8s osram balasts pluged right in?

Or did you swap factory vw hid bulbs for these led?

Bummer that the ballast still need to work, a couple of the other led replacements have new power supply.

I swapped mine out for these D3S: Osram 66340XNN Night Breaker Laser. So much better! The 25 watters were ok, the cutoff is amazing but the output was meh. These are on another level. Not cheap but worth it to me, I was driving home at night 4 days a week so well worth the investment.

Having recently acquired a set of these headlights & I’m in the process of upgrading bulbs/ballasts, I have a question. Am I able to reuse the existing cables or will I need to source a set to fit the new bulbs & ballasts?

I ran across mine on Facebook marketplace of all places. Guy was parting some goodies out off his car, and the two jewels were a set of these lights along with one of the VW Helix subwoofers. I have seen them on eBay though. That was going to be my path until I did find these.

following along in Speedmaster’s footsteps, I’ve sourced a set of the Morimoto D3S bulbs as well, and have my ballasts on their way. Only questions I have now are; what is involved in removing the bulbs from the housings? I did try for a bit but didn’t want to bugger anything up if possible. I couldn’t see anything that was an obvious release mechanism.

It's been a while since I opened up my headlights. LOL

I think you turn the bulb to the left to take it out.
Sorry; you were correct. I looked closer at your initial bulb pic & saw the two-piece adapters & figured it out. Got the new bulbs in new ballasts on & new harnesses between the two (thought the ballast end had a 90 degree I wasn't anticipating). Just need some dry weather to install 'em and time to figure out any coding necessary.

There's zero coding required. It's a 100% plug n play kit.

Well; lights are in, and the bulb upgrade seems to have worked fine. Problem, I’m running into though is the bank of DRL‘s on the right side headlight don’t come on. For whatever reason, the plug on the back of the headlight to the car seems to be inverted that the release tab is up against the access port for the DRL module. Doubt, that is the cause of the problem but it is annoying. Still need to dig my way in and see what’s causing the issue with the DRL not working. Probably should have not completely bolted them in without trying to plug it in on the other side to see if it functions off that plug.

Followup; once I had a chance to do some research & testing. coding seemed to be the cause of the DRL issue. I’d coded byte 18 on the CCM to 1F in order to eliminate the fault codes for the LED tails and this is what seemed to cause the right-side DRL to not come on. Tried 04, 15, 22, 23, with various (unsatisfactory) outcomes. Only thing that seemed to sort the front was using 20 (US-market Golf/GTI) in byte 18 but that still gives me the various warnings for the tail lights.

I'm needing to do this upgrade to as the 25W are useless on dark Bog Roads!

Only question I need answering is "do I need new cables between the ballast and the bulb"?

Thanks
