I absolutely love how the aggressive my car looks with the OSRAM headlights on my Golf Wagon, but I just couldn't get over the fact that the HID lights had little improvement over the Halogen bulbs. I did some research on the European market and I found out the regulations to use 35w bulbs (D3S) and ballasts, the vehicle needs to be equipped with headlight washer fluid and auto-leveling. That's the reason why OSRAM went with 25w bulbs (D8S) and ballasts in order for the headlights to be certified for street use and to keep the cost down.
The D8S bulbs and ballast that comes with the OSRAM headlights are 25w. I did some research and I found out that you can upgrade the bulbs to 35w by changing the bulbs and the ballasts. The D8S bulbs projects approximately 2,000 lumen and D3S bulbs projects approximately 3,500 lumen.
I opted for the Morimoto XB 4300k D3S and ebay 35w OSRAM ballasts. The 35w OSRAM ballasts are more common in Kia, Hyundai, GM, Telsa, Jaguar, etc. The result is literally night and day difference!
I tried to take before and after pictures and the pictures does not do justice on the brightness comparison with the D8S and the D3S bulbs.
There's no drilling, no cutting, no modification and it is a 100% direct bolt on. The nice thing about the OSRAM bulb ring, you there's no bulb specific notch, it can be used between D3S and D8S! The Focus and Telsa Group had to drill the bulb to make a D8S notch for the bulb ring to accept the D3S bulb.
The only issue I had with the ebay OSRAM ballast cable is 90 degree angle and the stock OSRAM ballast cable is a straight angle.
If you want to upgrade your OSRAM ballasts, make sure the part number is either 10R-044663 or 10R-034663 and 35XT6-S-D3. Obviously make sure there's a 3 point mounting point on the ballast. Otherwise you can take the 4 point and swap the internals inside your 25w 3 point ballast.
