I suppose they could've stuck with the oil filter housing "cap" (now on the bottom) that does NOT have a separate drain hole in it, so that you would absolutely be guaranteed to get oil splashed over everything.

But yeah - this is such a PITA compared to the earlier cars that had the oil filter housing accessible up top.
