Unknown Item Under Hood

Proud new owner and trying to get up to speed....and hoping to soon post info back! So I was poking around from underneath (belly pan removed) and noticed a stack plate cooler with a cap similar to the oil filter housing cap. Anyone know what this is? Is there a filter in there? Or is it a drain ? It is in the front of the engine, closer to the driver's side, and has two hoses that go towards the top side of the car to ????? Thank you in advance!!

Sounds like the engine oil cooler.

The two hoses should transport coolant through the system to and from the cooler.

That's what I am thinking too....but then what is the cap for. It has a hex head on it for a socket and appears threaded??

The cap is probably just a means of attaching it to the block.

Any Vw that uses a cartridge filter and a stand alone oil cooler uses the same setup.

Instead of using bolts to hold it to the block, it uses a threaded cap.
