Under Hood DPF Regen System Always Running

2015 Golf Sportwagen 6-speed manual, about 140,000 miles. I took a trip from Massachusetts to Nova Scotia, including a ferry. While driving back through Maine today I pulled over to do some things and the DPF system that runs after the engine turns off came on. I’ve seen this many times. It’s on briefly then goes off.

When I started up a CEL came on. Driving performance seemed fine. But now that I’m home the radiator fan keeps running, turning off, then running.

I’m not technically knowledgeable, but obviously this has to do with something in the DPF/emissions system.

What should I do first? I’m within the Dieselgate warranty period. Is my battery going to go dead because of this?

If you're within the extended warranty, my understanding is that everything emissions equipment related, and almost everything that talks to the emissions equipment, is a covered replacement/repair. May want to take it in to your local dealer and see what they read. Just mention you think it's covered in the phone and they'll be able to verify by vin.

You mentioned your golf has 140k mi on it, but do you know when (or if) the DPF has been replaced most recently?

Sorry that it managed to kill your battery... I'm a noob so bear with me for a second:

The fan is supposed to kick on when the car runs an "active" regen cycle to burn off the organic matter in the DPF, and does so to keep everything cool. If your DPF was really good and clogged with ash it and the car was trying to regen constantly in a futile attempt to clear it out, I would have thought you would get a DPF specific dash light, and the car would potentially be driving poorly. Is your tail pipe clean or do you get soot residue on your finger if you run it on the inside of the pipe?

If instead you have a faulty temp probe sending a "it's hotter than the sun in here!!!" reading to computer, the car may be running the fan thinking everything is going to melt if it doesn't. I had a temperature sensor on my engine freak out and throw crazy high numbers at the computer after a glow plug and glow plug module replacement. But in that case, my car threw both a CEL and a flashing glow plug light.

I think you’re on to something. My fingers don’t get any soot from the tail pipe. And no dash light specific to the DPF. From what you say, temp sensor seems likely. Is there a ton of labor involved to change it?

The only dealer I trust at all is Portsmouth VW about 40 minutes from me. I’ll try jumping the battery and if it works I can get it there.

Don't thank me unless I'm right. Definitely call the dealer you trust ahead of time, and let them know you think it will be warranty work. I have no idea about book time for individual sensors. We're all just spitballing until you can get a scan tool on it.

VCDS is still around $200 for unlimited service on 3 different VINs. Even if this car is the only one you'll ever scan with it, what's the price the shop will charge for an hour of diagnostic time on top of the hassle and cost of driving the car there and back (assuming it can drive at all)? Probably not that much less.

I mean, it will run on all windows 7, 8, and 10 versions. Any FB marketplace special will work as long as it has a USB drive and a GB of space on it.

You can buy a bottom dollar Walmart laptop and it will run vcds like a champ. Heck a refurbished lap top off Amazon will work just fine. Pretty sure this conversation was had a few months ago, with several guys offering solutions for you.

iI is cheap up front and for a one issue use, what's it $70-90?

But the yearly subscription to actually do anything does add up.

even if you know the codes, i don't think you'll be ontop of trying to fix anything, especially with VW warranty willing to replace anything.

I'd say get a tow (or charge up the battery enough to drive) to the dealer of your choice and let them work their magic.

I did have Autofair Nashua just complete Phase 2B on our Passat, they had it for a full week, i can't complain as the cars been trouble free for the week since and i haven't seen any issues.

I'd go back to them and I had to travel 25 min to them.

I can use my wife’s Golf this week until she gets home on Monday. But then I’d probably need to rent a car. Dealers aren’t going furnish loaners for this.

I'm only slightly embarrassed to say that the Malibu is my favorite rental car, and I wish they kept making the 2.0T as it was proper quick (0-60 in the mid fives).

I also really appreciate how GM's headlight knob defaults to Auto, and clicks back if you turn your headlights off.

So I plugged an OBD module into the car and ran Car Scanner. I made an educated guess for the engine profile. Ran diagnostics. I saw nothing that referred to DPF. And I don’t understand most of what

Also, after jumping the battery and driving for 35 minutes, it didn’t restart again without another boost.

Even though it gives me some dread, I’m taking it to a dealer tomorrow. All seemed to run well until that fan kept coming on. So I’m still hoping it's emissions related and covered.

If you plugged in a generic obd scanner, it may not give all your codes. What, specifically, did it ask you for as far as "engine profile"? And what did you tell it? Can you dump the readout here?

And yeah, I would expect that your car needed a boost after driving some more. The underlying cause is still there.

You are correct that low voltage is making the car freakout and drop dozens of errors on you. If you have a jump pack that can supply power, could you slap that on the car and run a scan again? That way the only issues will be ones NOT related to having a dead battery.
