Was into my local dealer yesterday for my last free service (30K) and the service advisor reminded me of that and proceeded to prepare me for the 40K service costs. He gives me an estimate for $919.00 and describes the service DSG blah blah...He then goes into the reminder of the goodwill package and suggesting I might want to use it for this service blah blah...I looked at him and nodded blah blah. I get home to look a the details and besides the oil change and the DSG service the rest of the list items were inspect this, that but no other materials or parts required. $550 for labor (about 5 hours worth) and $375 for parts. I dont have a reference point for the dealer 40K service but it sure seems to me they will be hiking their service costs to take a share of the goodwill above the $500 to be spent at the dealer. When I get ready to do it and if I go to a dealer the work done will be the DSG service and the oil change...period.nothing else.

Has anyone recently had the 40K service done at any of the VW Twin Cities dealer ships and what did you pay? and was there a lot of this nonsense list of inspection items like check the pinch level of the windows :)

Thanks for your input.

The DSG service alone is about $400. It's not the cost of the replacement fluid as the time and expertise involved. Do a search here and you'll find a posting on steps involved if you'd like to tackle it yourself.

Other than that, the 40K service isn't much different than others. I forget where the brake fluid flush falls, that might be the 40K as well. And again, not much material but a lot of work.

The 40k service is a whopper for cost, mainly due to the DSG service. Around I've heard quotes of $600 to $700. So being concerned about it I bought a service package for the 40k and 50k service to save some bucks. Got a good deal and recently looked at trying to buy add'l service packages with the $500 dealer goodwill card, but none is offered. I guess I'll use it for tires or something. I'll have to pay full price after 50k.:(

The information given here is pretty accurate. While the DSG service makes the 40K service interval expensive, evidently the overall cost can vary from dealer to dealer. At >$900, I'd sure shop around.
It's not that intimidating to DIY the 40K service, as long as one has the physical facilities and the tools. I've done all the rest (engine O&F, fuel, passenger compartment filters) for decades, and so running the Passat up on the ramps and doing the DSG isn't that much different.
Like others on this forum, I intend to service the DSG via the drain / measure /refill method, rather than the more involved "official" VW method that uses the pricey tool. Idparts (a TDI Club forum sponsor) has the complete NMS Passat 40K service kit (including DSG) for $200, and I won't be out more than $50 for the additional tools I'll need. Even for the people who are paying $600-650 at indy shops for this service, that's a good deal. The first time I do this, I'll basically pay for my VCDS, which is also a good deal.

I'll do the same thing when the time comes. Forums have a lot of info on how to do stuff. Saves money and time.

I just re-visited idparts' web page, and they're also running a $50 credit if you turn in the VW "dieselgate" $500 Visa card and use it on their merchandise. So the $500 free money from VW is turned into $550 by idparts. Pretty sweet. Then I can use the $500 "dealer money" towards a new set of tires or something, and if we decide to trade the car, throw it down as money off the deal.

I clicked through 3 dealer's online systems to schedule maintenance (email and VIN). Did not make a reservation, but a few days later 2 dealers sent a 20% coupon for the 40k.

Then I called and got estimates on the phone, took the 20% to the cheapest dealer. With tax and fees, $640. Service did not include a loaner, had to use the shuttle. The quote at $950 included a loaner, no thank you.

have the dsg done at the dealer, that way if they screw it up they can replace the trans for you , and then do your own oil change , fuel filter, air filter and cabin filter.

Do what I did and order the services a la cart. Told him to write me up for DSG fluid, fuel filter replacement and oil change. Came out quite a bit cheaper than the 40K service. That inspection stuff I did myself. Had the tires rotated for free elsewhere.

First, I don't have a DSG and I do my maintenance myself, therefore would recommend DIY as your best and cheapest option (assuming you have the tools). However, I have a few friends who do have the DSG, and prefer our dealer do the work. If you don't mind about an hour drive, depending on where you are in the metro, I'd recommend having it done at Mankato VW. Contact Steve Tuschen and he can hook you up. From what my buddies tell me, you'll save a few hundred. They have taken care of several things for me including the free maintenance early on, replacing my DEF Tank Heater and Heater Core R&R (the last two out of warranty at no cost to me). They are good about only doing the specific maintenance you want, which will help you avoid them charging to check for pinch protection ;). Their work has been top notch and within the time promised. PM me if you want any more info.

Cheers,

Aaron

My local dealer quoted $1150 for full 40k service. I ordered the $200 service kit from Idparts and paid a TDI Guru $180 in labor for engine oil/filter, DSG oil/filter, and fuel filter changes. You may find one near you as well.

If you a are physically able to change the oil, you can change the trans fluid. It's not hard at all. Just look at the information on the forum and follow it. Buy the walmart flotool funnel for 2 dollars along with the id parts package for 200 and save yourself alot of money.

Got my 40k service done at the Ann Arbor VW Michigan dealer today. My total cost out the door was $567. No coupons, no specials, no haggling.

That was oil change, dsg service, fuel filter, cabin air filter and adblue topoff.

Dealerships charging over $1,000 are flat out gouging.

I am in the Twin Cities and had the dealer activate my goodwill package today. My 40k service will come up this spring some time. I asked the 40k service cost and was told $892. I plan to do the work myself. I let the dealer do the free services (along with a failed turbo) to support them, but I am looking forward to starting to do the maintenance myself.

I am in the Twin Cities and the dealer I bought the car from performed my 40K service back in May of this year for $639.61 (40K plus DSG service).

I did not use a coupon and the service was performed correctly with no issues. PM me for the dealer name/location.
