A VW staffer told me the turbo in the 02 TDI is a new, stronger design with the designation "R" added to the turbo. Has anyone else heard of this? He was telling me about other non advertised 2002 TDI power improvements and just touched on this.

He has been a very reliable source of info so far. He says the turbo "R" is a part of the long term VW marketing plan which is already in motion to upgrade TDI engines to the US, with some big improvements in the foreseeable future.

Sorry Steve, I see no difference for the ALH in the Euro parts catalogue (update 10th of October). It is still 038 253 019 C (or CX for reconditionned), for my 98 to 02. Included in the manifold.
One interesting thing is that on the newest 110HP (ASV, the older was called AHF), there is indeed a new part number: 038 253 019 N (or NX), whereas the AHF and the ALH had the same old turbo. The 100 HP pumpe-duese engine uses that new turbo as well. Maybe is that the stronger turbo? Dunno. No "R" here anyway. A special US turbo? Looks expensive to me, but who knows...

PS: for Mickey: the VNT 17 is 038 253 016 G (used by the ARL aka 150 HP PD). Having problems with your new toy? E-mail me!

No-it's a straight VW dealer. He also mentioned 100 hp as the new rating, but he went on to talk about how he wanted more. I was very interested and wanted to get more, but this talk can dry up in a second if you ask questions.

There have been rumors that the ALH is going to be replaced by a version of the 100hp Pumpe Deuse. But other sources have said "don't count on it."

My guess...and this is only a guess...is that the engine change will be made when they start doing the new 6-speeds in a couple of years. You know...the "all new" transmissions, built to handle the torque of the TDI.

Actually, I take it back. My guess is none of these things will ever happen, and the emissions laws will wipe out new TDIs because our fuel quality isn't going to improve.
