Blown turbo

My car is still at the dealer and I am going to trade it in on a 2014MY identical car. The trade in value they are offering is outstanding and the new vehicle price is very good too... so I won't own this car any longer.

  • Miles on car at failure: 15,500 miles
  • Build date: I think it was 8/12
  • Corrective actions from dealership: in the shop now for a turbo, oil lines and intercooler as the dealer said it had blown metal chunks into the intake stream
  • Outside air temps at failure: about 25F
  • Failure warning signs, if any: loud whine from turbo - but it didn't acutally stop working, just got really noisy so I took it in
  • Warning lights on dash/MFI: none
  • Problems since replacement: I don't have the car back yet.
  • Repair time: it's already been in 5 days
  • Any dealer divulged info on other incidents involving other failures:
  • Did the dealership perform all maintenance and on schedule: yes
  • If not dealership, what oil was used/miles on oil:
  • Are you the original owner of the car: yes
  • Did you baby your car or not: no - I ride it hard
  • Do you interrupt DPF regenerations: yes
  • How long is your daily commute: 20-25 miles usually round trip

Which dealer are you going to? And, how happy are you with them?
Just curious, as I'm a local that may need a turbo replaced at some point.

FROM MEMBER kat1234 PM'd.

For some reason, I cant post on this page but I looked up this thread because I have had TWO Turbo Blowouts on my 2013 Volkswagen Passat.

The first one occurred in January (1 month after receiving the brand new car) and the second one just happened yesterday while driving on the highway.

#1 Under 10k Miles
#2 Under 30k Miles.

This is very concerning to me because when this occurs, my entire engine and battery turns off almost immediately after the glow plug light goes on. Therefore, there is no time to react and get to a safe location.

I am not receiving any answers, any apology for safety risks, or any guarantee that this wont happen again.

The first incident caused my car to be in the shop for 6 weeks and I am being told that the part is on backorder and probably will not be available for 2 weeks.

I am seeing the first incident occur for many and it concerns me that they probably dont know that this could or probably will happen again.

I cant think of a greater safety risk than an engine and battery shutting down while driving on the highway.

Thought this information might be helpful.

Thanks,

Auburn VW -- this is 4th TDI from them, have been very satisfied up to this point. Frustrated, working with VW now although dealer has been very supportive -- I think we should have another vehicle. Will report back.

New member. Two failures to report. Will post twice.

Miles on car at failure: 15,150 miles. January 22, 2014
Build date: ? Purchased April 2013
Corrective actions from dealership: New turbo. They said different model number than the original unit, but couldn't give me the part number. Because I drove it to dealership, dumping oil through the exhaust, they also replaced the intercooler, EGR and DPF.
Outside air temps at failure: about -10
Failure warning signs, if any: slight whine from turbo for about a week before failure. Temps were VERY cold. (-7 to -21). The car failed in the evening, but that morning when leaving for work, the turbo made a split second choo-choo train whistle, but continued to function, although it felt like the turbo was free-wheeling and not really in sync with the actual boost. When it failed, there was a muffled bang, followed by a locomotive type black oily smoke rolling out of the exhaust. I was only 2 miles from the dealership, so I drove it there immediately. When standing on the throttle, it sounded like a nut rattling around in a can.
Warning lights on dash/MFI: Flashing glow plug.
Problems since replacement: Another blown turbo today.
Repair time: 13 Days.
Any dealer divulged info on other incidents involving other failures: "Yeah, we've seen a couple of those".
Did the dealership perform all maintenance and on schedule: yes
If not dealership, what oil was used/miles on oil:
Are you the original owner of the car: yes
Did you baby your car or not: Baby it, until fully warmed up.
Do you interrupt DPF regenerations: yes
How long is your daily commute: 90 miles usually round trip
Transmission (DSG/auto or manual): manual
Failed turbo part number (if known): 0005
Replacement turbo part number (if known): ?

Miles on car at failure: 17,510 miles. Failed this morning.
Build date: ? Purchased April 2013
Corrective actions from dealership: New turbo. They told me that they didn't replace an oil line previously, and that was the reason for the failure this time.
Outside air temps at failure: about 24F.
Failure warning signs, if any: No warning signs at all! Just a sudden "phew" sound, followed by no boost. Wasn't even up to speed yet from leaving my driveway. No oil pouring out of exhaust this time, so I again drove to dealership.
Warning lights on dash/MFI: Flashing glow plug.
Problems since replacement:
Repair time:
Any dealer divulged info on other incidents involving other failures: This is funny. There was the exact car pulling into the service bay ahead of me. I listened as the driver told the service writer at the counter about his problem...it was the same as mine. Here's the funny part. He's is a sales guy at the dealership! He tossed the counter guy the keys and said, "I'm probably not your first priority right now, am I?"
Did the dealership perform all maintenance and on schedule: yes

  • Any dealer divulged info on other incidents involving other failures: Said 'one other' 2014 car had a similar failure.

  • Do you interrupt DPF regenerations: No idea.

  • Transmission (DSG/auto or manual): 6MT
  • Failed turbo part number (if known):

I'm going to pick this up today, browsing this thread so I'll know what to ask when I do. I appear to be the first 2014 model year reporting in - I purchased it back in October of 2013. I was on my way to the dealership for the 10k mile service when the it started to get bad. Noticed some bad smells. I'll get some more details and post them when I pick it up this afternoon.

Just finished climbing a hill.
95% of the miles on this car were highway speed, they are all generally long drives of 1 hour or more.
I only know of 3 regens interrupted

From BadNewsMike:

He texted me this:
Here are the answers to the question on the bottom (in order) if you would like to post:***27,207 miles, (don’t know the build date), complete replacement with EGR, intercooler, etc. etc, 30º’s, a few minutes of a light squeal varying with RPMS, blinking glow plug light, then limp mode, 16 days, due to backordered parts, dealer acknowledged that they had seen a couple of others, dealer oil changes, just under 5,000 since last oil change, yes original owner, deliberately easy driving for the first 5,000 then typical (lots of highway, but still plenty of hills), I’m not aware of interrupting DPF regens, various distances, 6-speed manual, replacement part # 03L-253-056-QX.***Enjoy!
