  • Failure warning signs, if any: Friend said it made a “white puff” when I drove away and then the turbo blew.

if its me, xman turbos in UK (quick shipper) he never disappoints me. he tend to beef them up with billet impeller that will do better than the rest out there.

Corrective actions from dealership: Out of Warranty.

Failure warning signs, if any: High pitch whine (louder with acceleration / RPM), low performance at start from stop

Warning lights on dash/MFI: No CEL or OBDII codes. scan at dealership ID'd turbo related code

Problems since replacement: TBD (Awaiting discussion w/VW Customer Care)

Repair time: TBD (Est. 10 hr

New to the Forum, so this is a bit time-late.
  • Miles on car at failure: 126,000 Miles/Oct 2023
  • Build date: 2014
  • Corrective actions from dealership: Replaced Turbo (at my expense of course)
  • Outside air temps at failure: 40s-70sF
  • Failure warning signs, if any: Began to hear whistling noise when accelerating. Occurred over the course of 1 week. First heard as I was driving on the highway on a roadtrip (about 7 hours). Then, EML. From there, sluggish acceleration to no acceleration. Limped it to dealership at morning rush hour. Couldn't get above 35mph.
  • Warning lights on dash/MFI: Received the blinking glow plug (Engine Malfunction Light) about a day before full failure. Day of full failure, also received the Engine Warning light.
  • Problems since replacement: 6 months since. No issues.
  • Repair time: 2 weeks
  • Any dealer divulged info on other incidents involving other failures: No
  • Did the dealership perform all maintenance and on schedule: Yes through 80K. Routine Oil changes at dealer since. Other maintenance (fuel and air filters, brakes, etc) by me since that time.
  • If not dealership, what oil was used/miles on oil: N/A
  • Are you the original owner of the car: Yes.
  • Did you baby your car or not: Mostly.
  • Do you interrupt DPF regenerations: No.

  • Failure warning signs, if any: Idling at a red light, slow loss of power and instant death.
  • Warning lights on dash/MFI: During the weeks before, would randomly get flashing glowplug symbol. Power was greatly reduced. Turbo had specific whistling sound (almost sounds like someone whispering??)
  • Problems since replacement: none
  • Repair time: 2 days
  • Any dealer divulged info on other incidents involving other failures: no dealer involved
  • Did the dealership perform all maintenance and on schedule: I did.
  • If not dealership, what oil was used/miles on oil: liqui-moly 5w40
  • Are you the original owner of the car: No, 2nd Owner.
  • Did you baby your car or not: More or less, gets pushed from time to time.
  • Do you interrupt DPF regenerations: yes, it had multiple faults in the regen system.
  • How long is your daily commute: 15-20 minutes.
