I asked for the turbo warranty for my new 2014 Passat and I got it; Here is a copy of the email;

I researched your concern and found out that VW is going to extend the warranty on the turbo of your vehicle for 01.29.2024 or 120,000 miles whichever occurs first. This warranty extension is posted to your VIN on the VW dealer page so any VW dealer can access this information to display the Turbo warranty extension. Please see me with any questions.

Hi VW, The 2014 Passat car I bought from you, has an engine code of CKRA, and was built in NOV 14th of 2013. I heard the 2012 and 2013 passat's are getting an extended warranty for the emission controls part that covers the turbo. Will my 2014 passat get that extension? Here i a copy of the article; Turbocharger Limited Warranty Extension VWP-14-04.

FYI - I tried this too, but my build date was March 2014, and I was told via email response the extended warranty didn't apply to my VIN. The letter said when defects are found they are isolated to time and place of manufacture, and apparently mine didn't fall into those parameters. So I assume the fix was found and applied by the date my car was built - HOPE SO!

This time I got a copy of all of the handwritten tech notes from the dealer, 14 pages of stuff. The cashier said they usually don't give that out, so I asked her if she was saying that they refused to give it to me. I even offered to pay for the copies. Needless to day, I was not pleasant with anyone at the dealership, but got my copies. The service writer from the first time my turbo failed quit, so I had a new writer who was more interested in getting the loaner back than explaining anything concrete even after I told him I filed a complaint with VW. VW verified the car was fixed and that was it. After several emails and phone calls with non english speaking people, and after I asked for a lifetime warranty on the turbo and emissions system, they offered 12,000 more on the replacement turbo, that's it. I declined.
This is my first VW, and my first diesel. I doubt I will buy a VW again.

The way my dealer explained it to me is that only two parts are covered under this extended warrant, the turbo itself and the exhaust flap. I thought I got an extended emissions warranty too, but I guess this is not the case.

Well mine gave out today. It started to whine about a week and a half ago and has been increasingly louder each day. I decided to stop by the dealer today to have them listen to it. After a brief test drive with the tech he agreed it was the turbo but needed to further diagnosis. They were able to take a closer look while I waited. Service guy came out about 30 minutes later and said he had to order parts and scheduled me for next Monday. He reassured me it would be fine to drive until Monday! Well after picking the kids up from school and 3 miles from home it gave up! Dead, done!!! After a brief cool down on the side of the road I made an attempt to start it and it made a round or two and wouldn't do any more.

Not as lucky as I'd hoped

Turbo gave out on the way home from work yesterday. We just came back from a 1000 mile round trip last weekend and never noticed any whine or other issues. Was accelerating gently through an intersection when it refused to upshift, then a flashing glow plug light and no power. Drove another mile to get to a safe parking area and restarted. Glow plug light was gone, but steady CEL was now on. Read the codes with Torque - "Powertrain - turbo underboost condition". Ouch. Called the dealer, was able to drive it the 20 miles to drop it off.

The good news - it waited until after our road trip to go out on us (I'm sure the Wisconsin weather didn't help with this).

Insult to injury - the recall notice letter from VW had arrived the same day. My wife says as we're driving home from the dealership, "We got something in the mail from VW today, I didn't read it yet."

My first Turbo failure, 2013 Passat TDI, 48k miles, 6sp, 45F, WA, UNK.

Turbo seized while on cruise control at 60mph on highway. glowplug light started flashing and check engine light came on shortly after. I was able to drive in limp mode to the dealer.
VW is now replacing turbo, turbo lines, oil pump, catalytic converter under warranty. Dealer claims they found contaminated oil, but refusing to replace engine, or provide a metallurgical oil test showing no major damage to engine. They also claim Catalytic converter and oil pump is precautionary replacement under a VW service bulletin. I got a recall notice a week prior that they needed reprogram the turbo startup psi. Hope the info helps someone, but with the drivetrain warranty up in 12k, this one may just end up for sale soon.

Several intermittent power failures with RPM jumping to redline for a 10 seconds or so and then recovering
One complete power loss in the passing lane of the PA turnpike with all warning lights on (including tire pressure) and had to coast to the side of the road across three lanes of traffic
Dealer did the ECM software upgrade -- although I don't see that being relevant-- and I have only had two short losses in the past two months
The only code the dealer found was "Engine lost communication with Transmission' failure obvious. They have no knowledge of this being a problem, so they say.

Notes: Turbo did not catastrophically fail. Car was still very drivable, I just heard the turbo getting louder over the course of a day or two. Went out to lunch one day and it was really noticable. Not a bad sound, just like a loud turbo whistle. Drove it into the shop on my lunch hour and later that afternoon they told me they were replacing the turbo.
Dealer said that part of the TSB is to R&I Intercooler. Tech notes said that the compressor impeller had made contact with the housing and debris was found in the intercooler.

• Corrective actions from dealership: Replaced boost pressure sensor, turbo, DPF, oil pump, oil line, oil and filter. Dealer commented the turbo was covered in oil and the shaft had play. Turbo was intact.

• Failure warning signs, if any: 4 days before failure, car went in to limp mode with flashing glow plug. Code indicated mass air sensor, thus pulled sensor and cleaned it, reinstalled and ran fine. Day of failure, car would not start and showed no signs of compression. Had car towed to shop.
• Warning lights on dash/MFI: With car unable to start, there were no lights.
• Problems since replacement: none yet. picked up car this morning.

Corrective actions from dealership: Replaced turbo, inter-cooler, catalytic converter, oil pump and shaft, all hoses and plumbing... gaskets nuts bolts etc.
Outside air temps at failure: 46 F
Failure warning signs, if any: None
Warning lights on dash/MFI: None
Problems since replacement:
Repair time: 48hrs
Any dealer divulged info on other incidents involving other failures: Siad they have the parts because they do these all the time. Had ALL the parts in stock.
Did the dealership perform all maintenance and on schedule: YES
If not dealership, what oil was used/miles on oil:

Did you baby your car or not: YES
Do you interrupt DPF regenerations: By this I assume you mean shut off the car when happening. I asked dealer about this specifically when I got the car and they said it makes no difference.

Did you have the Jan 2015 23N5 software update: Didn't even know about it. I should come here more often.

So can I drive this thing home or to the dealer or not at all?

If your glow plug light is on, do not run the engine- it will empty all your oil into the exhaust and you will toast your engine.
