Reinstalled the code today.... must have missed a digit yesterday. Works now and I am now getting those higher temps. I may have been happier with those other numbers! LOL.

My question now is what were those other codes I was running? Wonder why it actually worked?

I think there are multiple ways to call a data set, and depending on the math that is applied to the coding, it may not reflect reality. I think you were viewing one of the downstream sensors before, perhaps something labeled as Cat B1S1 or something similar.

ScanGauge called it EG1 when I first installed it.... they call it something else now...Catalyst Temperature
(Bank 1, Sensor 1)

I just noticed that what I HAD for EG1 is the same thing as you have for CAT 1.... that sure explains a lot! Duh! CAtalyst Temp

Phew - sure is weird seeing the numbers I'm seeing now! These are going higher than in my F250 6.0 when pulling my 30' 5th wheel up a mountain!

NOW he gets it! Welcome to the, "Gee...I'm TRYING to drive more and worry less, but every time I look at my ScanGuagII I just can't believe the scalding air that's being forced into my cold-soaked little turbo." club...:D

According to my Bluetooth adapter and Torque (on my android phone) I typically see peaks on the EGT of about 1100 F when not in regen, but have seen it go into the low 1300's during a regen!, cruising is something around 600 to 700. Idling EGT's somewhere between 360 and 400 depending on outside temps and if I have the AC on. I have taken to trying to make sure I am at or below 400 before turning the car off. I set an alarm to warn me when the car goes into regen, it plays a blairing alarm sound through the cars audio system. So far I've had 2 times when I was just about to turn the car off and it went into regen. My alarm is set for 1000 degrees at what I think is the entrance to the cat.

Are these numbers similar to what other people see?

Exactly, if my Dodge Cummins spikes over 1200F for long I start to back out of it, I have always owned Diesels but these DPF equipped rides are a new chapter for sure
Be careful with that 6.0, Google powerstrokehelp.com for some great videos and advice to keep it alive :)

OK, I sent a note to VWoA a few days ago regarding my 2014.

Here was their response, and included a PDF of the warranty extension already posted. So this must be VIN specific, as I've read others with 2014's are not receiving the same response on their Turbo coverage...

Dear Mr. Aaron,

Thank you for your patience while I got back to you.

It’s always a pleasure to hear from drivers who keep up with the news on their cars. I checked your VIN, and confirmed that we have extended the warranty on your Passat TDI’s turbocharger.

We’re now warrantying against manufacturer’s shortcomings in materials or workmanship for 10 years or 120,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the original in service date of 10/28/2013. I’ve also attached a document with describes this warranty in greater detail.

It’s my goal to make your ownership as fun and easy as possible, so if you ever have any further questions about your Passat, please don’t hesitate to email me again.

Drive safe!

I tried the same thing with VWoA with my 2014, but was told otherwise. My build date was March 2014 so the fix for the turbo problem was already in production by then. Your build date could have been as early as July 2013 when they switched over from the 2012's to 13's. It would be interesting to know the date the fix was made on the production line.

You're making the assumption that there was actually a fix. That's a bold assumption, with Volkswagen's history (*cough* intercooler icing).

Just the same, it's also a bold assumption that nothing was changed.
It's actually a reasonable assumption if you're familiar with Volkswagen's history on problem resolution. ;)

It's easy enough to know for sure, as all of the turbochargers have data plates with part numbers on them.

Yeah, I found it interesting. My build date was September 25, 2013. The reason I posted is that I had originally surmised based on the Turbo Part Number and Build date thread http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=381481 , that my turbo was the updated version....
P/N 03L 253 256 Q
S/N PG 50225981 01127
BW: BV40 E - 0020

Earlier versions/model years had an "E" where the "Q" is in my part number above and that "E" was followed by a "Vxxx" number...

I am happy to know I am covered by warranty until 120K, but curious as to VW's rational. I suppose we'll never know...

When I traded 2012 for 2014, I specifically asked about turbo extended warranty, and was told YES, it was included.
I didn't pursue it any further, but now I'm curious...

TURBO: 2012+ Passat turbo failures [discussion thread]

So I have another failure. And the TSB guide for repairs (what to replace and flush out, etc) added an extra step - replace the oil pump. So I have an excuse to give you all some pictures of a CR with the oil pan off.

BTW it sounded like a Halloween ghost sound effect from the turbo.

Thanks for the awesome pics!

I'm guessing they're worried about the oil pump ingesting debris or something.

or the original pump lacked pressure that's causing failures and the random lifter tick? Looks easier to access than my dodge Cummins that has a front axle in the way :D

No MIL, DTC stored was starter mechanical blockage or electrical fault. The old starter felt rough when you tried to turn it.

So I guess this is a first for most people? She's naked!!

Sure does make the job of replacing a DPF and turbo easy.

Jason,

Random question, but is that tube that plugs into the air intake right before the turbo inlet for low-pressure EGR or for crankcase venting?

I've spotted that same tube on my car and assumed it was for the LP EGR because it seems way too beefy to be for the PCV system, but I'm not entirely sure.

Thanks for the pics! It's interesting to see what failures come our "inside mechanic's" way.

In the black plastic tube? That's where the PCV breather hose is in most all of the TDIs I have seen, including this one. There is a electrical connector on the tube for the PCV heater.

So I was at the dealer yesterday dealing with the frozen driver door lock problem and asked about the updated, supposedly wider I.D. turbo oil lines. I was told there aren't any.

If anyone has an actual part number I would be glad to see it.

I don't believe the oil pipes are actually different, just replaced to prevent some debris from damaging the new turbo.

OTOH I just performed a software update that lists improved emmissions and revised warm up strategy in the changes section. 23N5 software update.

Sure, here is the first page with the most pertinent details.

Jason

PS: please note that they are NOT starting the mailing of letters to customers until January 15 (is noted in the above screen shot). So don't go running down to the dealer asking to have it done yet. They won't show it as available and won't be able to do anything for you. This only came up because it is in dealer inventory. Probably want us to be the guinee pigs in case there are bugs in the software??
