I can't more highly recommend Mike and his work. I've been around vehicles for decades, worked in Heavy Equipment shops, known a lot of Mechanics, and can do just about anything on anything that moves but at my age, choose to not get under cars as much as I used to! Mike is very, very good... a TDI specialist... but more important, he is a fair-and-square guy. His work is efficient and his prices are reasonable. He explains what he did, keeps the old parts, and only charges for the work he DID, not the work he can "get away with billing", like so many other shops. Contact me on the side for more details.

Already in the list, but I wanted to add my 2 cents. Just had cam/lifters replaced here in my 2004 Golf around 200k. Roman was easy to deal with, genuinely knowledgeable, thorough, and was able to get the job done quickly without much heads up on my part.

He took the time to poke through the rest of the car with me and answer all my other questions, and he didn't even make too much fun of the headlight access panel I made out of duct tape and a coat hanger. I don't think he liked it all that much, but he didn't pass down harsh judgement either.

Bottom line, I wouldn't hesitate to head back to him if I needed something else major done.

I concur, Roman is a great guy to work with and also very knowledgeable. I'll be going to him to do my timing belt once I receive my Christmas bonus.

There aren't many online reviews for the Joetown Garage, but they are all positive. It's too soon to declare that Wally and Scott are TDI experts, but I think it's worth adding them to the list and then hope that some other Club members will check them out. AFAIK there's never been a shop or mechanic on the list from Iowa. This one is fairly close to Iowa City, so reasonably convenient for folks in eastern and central Iowa.

Long-time lurker on this site but I would like to recommend Kevin Lichty at Lichty Automotive in Waterloo, Iowa. He specializes in VWs and Audis but has expanded to include other European makes as well. I've been taking my VWs ('84 GTI, '85 Jetta Turbodiesel, '96 Passat Wagon TDI, '01 New Beetle, '03 Jetta TDI) to Kevin since 1990. I have lived in Minnesota for 8 years and am closer to several Gurus but still go to Kevin. And once my '11 JSW TDI is done with Carefree Maintenance he'll see that as well. Besides most of the routine maintenance he's done all of the timing belt/water pump and related parts replacements (at least 5 on the diesels) plus 2 more on the gassers. His shop is well equipped and he has been able to diagnose and fix the few problems I have encountered (including a CEL issue, fixed by replacing the glow plug bridge) over the years.

This is an old post, but the address and website are still current. Lichty got several mentions in the last decade, but not recently. That's why it has never been added to the Recommended Mechanic list.

Just wanted to put in a plug for TDI guru Mark Talbot in Berryville, VA from the recommended list. Over the past year he's done cam, t-belt, correctly diagnosed need for injector rebuild in my BEW engine, installed relay set from Cobra in my 09A automatic, and corrected several other smaller problems. Car runs better than new with best fuel economy ever at 250,000 miles. Straightforward, charges very reasonable labor rate. If you are in the Shenandoah Valley, Northern Piedmont or Northern Virginia, take your TDI to Mark!

I took my 2003 Jetta in to verify my injection pump timing. As it turned out, I was very far advanced, even though it ran, it had a loud rattly idle. They were able to get it dialed back in, in just a few minutes. These guys know their stuff. These guys are true dub-heads, and definitely work on the old flat four platform as well. All VW's and Audis.

My apologies. I didn’t think to check back lol.

For Knurren/Wilbur they diagnosed and replaced a bad p/s pump and the pressure hose which had a hole in it and was the source of the major leak. They also replaced the valve cover because the old VC gasket was leaking badly. They replaced the gasket on the brake vacuum pump as it was leaking quite badly.

When they did a once over on the car as I requested to identify any other issues, they found that the D/F spring was broken. They also found that a couple of the LCA bushings had split and there was a lot of play as well as some splitting in the tie rod end boots (i think its a boot).

I had them replace the struts, springs, tie rod ends, ball joints, CA’s... basically most of the entire front end suspension.

They kept me informed with phone calls the whole time as well as via xoxocar.com which I’ve never seen before, but I kinda liked it. They put all that they found, good and bad, and all their recommendations, with pictures for most of it.

I was very satisfied with not only the services but how friendly it was to interact with them. They love talking tdi and I have been very happy so far. I asked about other services and It seems like they do everything but body work. I asked some questions about how they do tb changes and it sounds like how it’s been described/written up here. I’ve not done one myself yet, so I may have forgotten some questions.


Both owners/mechanics drive ALHs. One drives a wagon and I think the other a golf. (not that it makes them good mechanics, but they say they specialize in tdi’s)

Asking for a friend.......long time ex member here. (had a 2012). A friends future daughter in law has a 2006 and she is in Cincinnati Ohio. Dealer telling her $2600 for a long list of items. She plans on trading it in around 2 months. Is there anyone trustworthy in Cincy that would look at it for her?
