Hey,

Just checking to see if anyone else can't get the list to come up. Every time I try I get a message that there is a problem and Google is notified. This has happened on 2 different PC's and different systems to make sure it wasn't my old crappy one, or, firewall issues.

If it is down, does anyone know a good wrench in Greenville, SC? Need to have diagnostics checked with VAG-COM. Engine light troubles.

Thanks,
72junky
Just tried both, the map and the list, and both opened normal using firefox.

If your Golf has TDI-specific problems, then it should be worth driving two hours (or further) to have an expert take a look at it.

Does anyone have any first-hand experience with EverythingEuro located in Winston-Salem, NC ? They are the only Malone Tune shop in NC.

Thinking about getting the Rawtek exhaust (DPF delete) with Malone Tune. I'd rather not have to drive to Canada to have this done. IF I do it at all.

I am in the Berkeley area and am looking for a Guru in the area. Thomas Sport Tuning is on the list, but from my experience they are more of a gasser fix/mod shop.
Any info? Diesel mechanic looking for side work?

Thanks!

Does anybody know where to go check some transmission components (VSS, Shift solenoid) in my 2005 Passat TDI with 230000 km on the clock before the decision to replace the entire transmission? Code P0732 just popped out and only solution they have is to rebuild slushbox or convert to gear box. I'm in Great Toronto Area, Ontario.
I will be very happy with any advice

I would like to recommend Richard55 as a very competent and trustworthy TDI mechanic just East of Atlanta near I-20. He uses the right tools, and works very hard to meet his commitments.

Twice in the last year he has driven the 6 hour round trip to my place for parts he unexpectedly needed for a job he was commited to. Since these were both unexpected failures that he could not plan ahead for, he could have just told the customer "Sorry the framistat broke, it will be 3 days for parts", instead he called around to see who had what he needed, and went the extra mile (or several hundred).

He has helped at GTGs for years, and has held a couple himself. He always is ready to lend a hand. Ready to ask questions and learn instead of bulling ahead, and just as ready to teach something that he sees you could do better. He is widely known and respected in the SC, NC, & GA area.

Recently he has picked up his work, as he has "retired" and has more time. I asked him if he was ready to be placed on the Recommended Mechanics list, and he finally said yes.

"Repairs at Richard's
1571 Keencheefoonee Road
Rutledge, Ga 30663 541-980-1466

I do the following; 1. timing belts, ahu, alh, bew, brm and cr; 2. front and rear main seals; 3. clutches; 4. injector installation; 5. tune installs; 6. Injection pump replacements and resealing; 6. cam replacement. 7. complete suspension overhaul; other work can be done on request."

Seconding ButlerNative90 above. Everything Euro in Winston-Salem has moved to 3190 Peters Creek Parkway, to a much bigger 5-bay shop. They generally only work on VW and Audi, and are lifelong expert enthusiast level techs. They've fixed a number of issues on my '96 Passat TDI that another shop did puzzled, mediocre work on. They're brutally honest, and LOVE what they do. Rates are reasonable and fair. Owner Tom Landock grew up around his dad's obsession with VW, and well and truly internalized it. The main technician, Walt, is a highly certified VW-trained tech, and is the TDI guru there. I highly recommend them, without reservation. They also host a GTG one evening a month, which is great company and food and VW talk.

Winston Salem...

I live in Winston and just bought a new 2013 Jetta TDI in August.

I would love to have a Guru do my regular maintenance but the free 10K maintenance from the dealer is tempting.

Currently, I have 7700 miles and the first maintenance is coming up.

What does the TDI hivemind think: free dealership oil change or a trusted Guru?

Paul

PS: Everything Euro in Winston only uses Lubro Molly (sp?) and I'd really like to use the Castrol that VW recommends. Any wisdom on this issue?

An oil change is an oil change.
But I know what oil I should use and what is good for my car, so I either change my own oil or have my trusted mechanic do it with the oil and filter that give him.

As long as the oil meets the 507 requirements, then the only difference is paying out of pocket versus included in the purchase. It might be a good way to get to know the people at Everything Euro.

I'm sure Tom and guys @ Everything Euro will use whatever you the customer would want, but they may talk you into how Liqui-Molly is superior. So long as you are using an oil that is compliant with what VW recommends, you're good.

Thanks

MacBuckeye, they are a great shop. The only place I will go and my in-laws actually schedule their visits from FL with us here in NC around their Jetta's (MKV TDI) maintenance needs just to take their car to Everything Euro

Thanks

I too have to vouch for the guys over at Everything Euro in Winston Salem NC. I've tried some other local shops with my cars and Tom and his crew are the best around. My in-laws just had a bunch of service done there for the second visit and now they plan their Jetta's maintenance around visits from FL to NC just to use this shop. That should tell you enough right there.

I am buying a MKIV Jetta TDI with 163,000 miles on it. Does anyone know if this is a good shop? What should I look for before purchasing? It is a 5spd manual

Thanks, Dom!

Even thought it may cost me some money, I think I'll go with everythingeuro.com for my 10K service.

However, has anyone heard anything BAD about the Service Department at Flow VW in Winston Salem?

I'm still kind of on the fence about this. I don't mind paying $100 for peace of mind at a Guru.

But still, free 10K service is hard to pass up.

Is this list updated. I was just wondering.
jwlionking updates it continuously, based on what people are recommending. Lately I think there have been more deletions than additions, unfortunately.

Also, the list includes TDI gurus plus some others who are not TDI specialists. If you see someone on the list who is near your location, do a complete search of the website to see what everyone has said about that mechanic, and how recent the information is.

Most of the time a TDI owner doesn't really need a TDI specialist, just a competent VW mechanic or German car mechanic. You do not need a TDI guy to work on the brakes or suspension or starter or alternator.

But if you have a problem or issue with the engine, turbo, or fuel system, that's when it would probably be worth traveling a considerable distance to have a TDI specialist diagnose or work on your TDI. Some states and provinces have quite a few TDI experts, but others have none at all. If there's no one near you, that's when you have to go outside the list, to find a competent person who may not work on TDIs on a regular basis.

Paul, I don't like to speak ill of other shops, so I won't. In all honesty, I'm sure they aren't going to mess your car up. It'd be pretty hard to pass up a free service, but at the very least, just come on by and check us out. We'd love to be able to help ya out any way we can.

I am sure he is in here somewhere but I didn't see him. Franks TDI in Lockwood, MO. I am not sure I am recommending him or not. I think he is good but very very expensive. And there was some question on honesty I cant prove it so I wont do any more than mention its possible. I could be wrong on that but even so. I still say he is expensive.

First off, Frank is very honest, I've dealt with him for years.

Secondly, if you have a complaint then post it here: http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=241854

Also make up your mind if you have a complaint or not, sounds like you're not very sure, lol.

Frank is not on the list because he is not a TDI mechanic. Mainly he rebuild cylinder heads or sells rebuilt ones, sells or calibrates injectors, and sells timing belt kits on the side. He has a shop but he does not have a garage, or a lift, or most of the equipment that an automotive mechanic will typically have.

I do not think he is very expensive. He charges a fair rate for quality work, and does not cut corners. If you want work done cheaply, find someone else.
