Utah Imports needs to be removed from this list.
It has been many years since anyone posted a positive comment about Utah Imports; management may have changed, good mechanics may have moved on to other shops.

Can you explain why you think Utah Imports should be deleted?

I recommend this Eastern WIsconsin TDI mechanic.

I'm referring this shop to be added to the trusted TDI mechanic list. Kevin is the lead mechanic and is honest and reliable. He performed all of the 40K service (except tire rotation and cabin filter change) on my 2010 TDI sport wagon including the DSG transmission service for under $400. The entire service took less than 2 hours and he used the 407 spec. VW part # engine oil.

Please consider adding this shop to the recommended TDI VW mechanic's list.

This is the contact information;

I am looking for a trusted mechanic in the Elkhart/South Bend area of Indiana. We just moved to the area and don't necessarily need any work done at the moment, but you never know, knock on wood.

I talked to someone at the shop who didn't seem to know the difference between an ALH and PD. Said some ridiculous things about engine oil.

Kerma (Charlie) also SLC apparently no longer wrenches on cars. His tune business seems to be the focus. Both names should go.

I would like to tip hat to V-Dub Auto

if you are in Houston, and find yourself in need of a mechanic for your precious VW. Christian is a straight up mechanic, he doesn't try to bull**** you, he gives you explain the work, and tries his best to work with you if you are in a jam.

I'm very happy with what he has done for me so far, and I am absolutely willing to spend more money with him to prove it.

He does cost a little more than I would spend on my Chevy. But that is not comparing apples to apples.

Bottom line is he is an excellent mechanic, and a cool guy to bull**** with. He has me as a customer for life, which actually might sucks for him.

My two bits,
~Junior

I'd strongly discourage using Diesel Land in Golden, CO. Not sure if this is the right place to post my experience, but I got his info (anuthee) from here and was massively let down.

I explained the symptoms the car was giving me, which are the same as one of my posts on here recently. Everyone agreed it was classic injection pump failure. I tried to have the car serviced sooner than later, but he couldn't diagnose the car. Finally, car lost all prime and I arranged to have it towed on an agreed date. Booked the date 3 weeks in advance and waited.

I bought a new injection pump in the meantime because I suspected that it could be the problem. Anuthee seemed pissed and condescending that I would be so stupid as to buy a pump and it was definitely not the problem. Whatever... it's my money and I would rather have a pump ready if it is indeed the problem. Through the whole process, i'd rate his customer service skills as offensive.

Moving forward, the car ran like crap and finally lost all prime and would not start. Had it towed to his shop on the night before the date scheduled.

I called in the afternoon and asked how things were going with the car. I took it in on thursday and figured that in a likely scenario, it would be done on friday. Anuthee told me he might not get to it and he's leaving the shop on friday so it would sit until monday. I told him that's going to be a problem and I would need to tow it somewhere else to get it running. I was planning on having the car for moving on the weekend (i understand if a part has to be shipped, it may take longer). He let me know it's my own fault for thinking he'd finish it that day or a day later. Pretty much acted like a douche IMO. The conversation ended with us agreeing that he'd call if he got around to it and let me know what the diagnosis is. No call, nothing. The next day i get a text saying it's done and it was a fuel line. I would have preferred to authorize the work being done, since I actually did want the pump installed anyways, but that was water under the bridge. I paid his other guy at the shop cash plus a little extra because I thought the job was done right.

5 minutes after leaving, car runs like crap and loses prime and dies. Exactly the same as when I brought it in. I had to tow it again. I towed it to VW and they diagnosed it as having a bad pump. They installed a new pump in about 5 hours and the car has run fine for over 1000 miles now. I drove the car to ND with no problems.

This is probably so frustrating since I requested a new pump be put on from the beginning. I think it may be a pride issue to have a customer self diagnose his own car. I have no idea. I basically paid for a tow on an agreed date, paid for a wrong diagnosis, and paid for work that wasn't the right work and then paid for another tow to have someone else do the job right. The whole process was a huge pain and his attitude to me was crappy.

I've never said anything bad about anyone on here. I've had other people service my car with no issues. JasonTDI is fantastic, and I don't think he'd say i'm a difficult customer. I personally would not recommend anuthee considering he couldn't diagnose a simple problem correctly and made the whole process a huge pain.

VW had the same information as him and same symptoms... I don't even think VW is that great, but based on the information they had, they diagnosed and properly fixed my car in a short amount of time.

I experienced the exact same thing last spring in a late model 1999.5 Jetta TDI. It turned out to be a cracked fuel supply line from the tank to the filter. Replaced the fuel line so no trouble since.
ooh, mine was definitely more than a cracked fuel line. Replaced pump, and not a hiccup since:)

Sometimes perfectly good injection pumps are replaced unnecessarily. I had a problem with the thermo-T on a fuel filter, allowing air to get sucked into the fuel line. Three bonafide gurus were pretty sure I needed a new injection pump, even though it worked just fine when I drove to the GTG. A different fuel filter solved the problem.

I replaced that also when I installed the new fuel line..........the one that had been in there came apart when I pulled it out.

New thermo-T and rings, and new filter both installed prior. Lines checked too. If lines, filter, and thermo-T are good, Seems like there's only one other reason fuel isn't getting to the car.... = Pump. Mine had like 320k on it. It had a good life from what I know about these things.

tperretta has never been a problem customer. Over what....7-8 years. Even while living out west. I did a lot of the last work, and agreed with him on the pump issue.

I've dealt with Anuthee on several different occasions, he helped me out of a serious jam once while I was traveling.

Sorry to hear you had a bad experience, but I know this is not his typical way of doing business. Through the years I've referred customers that have moved to CO to him and they all had a positive experience.

Glad you were able to get your TDI fixed and back on the road though, in spite of everything that transpired.

Cheers,
Ben

Maybe he doesn't care like he used to. I did let him know that the car had the same symptoms and quit running. He didn't show interest in helping correct the problem, stand by his work, or refund me. I paid him cash so I'm basically SOL. Might be time to quit referring him.

Excellent Jetta Mechanic RI

I brought my car to Jeremy Crafts (Chepatchet RI)
on Saturday to have the timing belt changed. He is so dedicated to his work. Any question you have about these cars he has an answer. He takes his time to make sure everything is done right. Also he checked out my whole car to make sure there were no other problems.
Look how clean he left my engine!

Sacramento to East Bay Trusted TDI Wrenches?

Howdy, y'all!

As a new Northern California TDI owner quickly becoming an enthusiast, I eagerly scanned the Trusted Mechanics list to discover a good shop in my area.

Surprise! None are listed -- the closest shown is European Auto in Alameda. So does anyone know of a trusted TDI wrench in the Sacramento-Davis-Vacaville area?

And does anyone have experience with Mark Malone's dealer in NorCal, Karmakanix in Berkeley? (It would be wise to wait until our new Passat is past warranty, but I'm already itching to see what another 40 hp and 100 lb/ft of torque will do!)

I want to add information about one TDI expert already on the list, and add another shop which, while not TDI-specific, may be of use to Twin Cities TDI owners.

First, Eric Merker ("Merk"), TDI Club handle Merkerguitar. He works at Midwest Motorworks in Hudson, Wisconsin, an eastern suburb of the Twin Cities. Bob Cook is the owner and proprietor, and seems to be very knowledgeable about Volkswagens and Audis, but Merk is the TDI expert.

Second, South Central Imports, located in South Minneapolis. Chad and Paul are VW and Audi experts, not TDI experts, but they both know Volkswagens inside and out. SCI was recommended to me by Jon Fettig (JFettig) who is a pretty good wrench himself, and now I recommend SCI to all of you in South Minneapolis or the west side of Saint Paul.

Not that funny... I had to drive 4 hours (each way) to get my first (emergency) timing belt changed... Some around here have driven 9 hours...

That said, many things on these cars can be repaired by any decent import garage (brakes, suspension, starters, alternators, windshield wiper motors, etc.)... The TDI-specific chores such as timing belt systems are worth seeking out someone who works on these cars on a regular basis.

Also, turbo-related issues and injection-system issues. Regular shops including those which specialize in VW and Audi usually do not do a good job trouble-shooting these systems. But they are fine with the ordinary Volkswagen stuff.

EUREKA! I just located an old buddy who has a German import shop around 30 minutes from me and is glad to catch up. I'm heading there in the am...

Metaphorically speaking, someone who takes 'the road less traveled' is acting independently, freeing themselves from the conformity of others (who choose to take 'the road more often traveled'), generally making their own choices, and perhaps leaving a new trail that will become the road more often traveled (until, of course, someone takes the road less traveled from there, and happens upon something even better than the first improvement; in that way, the cycle always repeats itself.

Can't get into list

Hey,

Just checking to see if anyone else can't get the list to come up. Every time I try I get a message that there is a problem and Google is notified. This has happened on 2 different PC's and different systems to make sure it wasn't my old crappy one, or, firewall issues.

If it is down, does anyone know a good wrench in Greenville, SC? Need to have diagnostics checked with VAG-COM. Engine light troubles.

Thanks,
72junky
