Tennessee Trusted Mechanic
I had the water pump die on my 2001 Golf TDI (105000 miles) enroute from St. Louis, Missouri to Titusville, Florida. I was really reluctant to allow a dealership to look at it for reasons we're all too familiar with, but I didn't have a lot of good options. Prior to allowing any work, I asked if I could speak with the technician. Much to my surprise, they led me out to the shop to meet one of the most knowledgeable mechanics I have ever seen in a dealership. I asked him how he'd do it and he outlined the exact procedure as it is written in the Bentley's (I've since checked) from memory. In just a few minutes he put me at completely at ease for two reasons. First, he was an adult. Many dealership technicians are fresh out of tech school but this guy clearly had been around and was familiar with my engine. Second, he went over how he'd be extremely careful to keep coolant and other fluids off the belt as he was just doing the water pump today and he wouldn't be removing my motor mount. I asked him if he'd let me inspect the timing belt once he had the upper and lower covers off and he agreed- I wanted to see if I needed to do the timing belt right now or could wait per schedule. The best thing was that he seemed to be motivated by my concern for my engine because he not only called me out as I requested, but he called me out once he had the WP out to show me the damage (impeller broken off the shaft as expected) and called me out a final time to show me the timing once he had it buttoned up. It was a hair advanced which is EXACTLY where it was the last time I checked it with my vag-com.
While I don't, as a general rule, recommend dealerships, these guys have proven themselves to me so long as Jimmy Napier is doing the work. I also feel I should mention the service manager, Bailey Thompson, who was able to get me in and out in 2.5 hours on what was clearly a busy day.
