I noticed that there are no mechanics listed in Iowa. Does anyone know how I can locate a reputable mechanic other than using the local Dealership I purchased from.

Many thanks!!

CycloneTurboHead
There may be some good VW mechanics in Iowa, but there are no TDI experts.

Or at least none for your generation of TDI. Depending on what kind of work you need done, you may have to travel a considerable distance.

Any TDI experts in or near West Virginia?

Hi to Everyone,

Can anyone point me to or recommend a TDI expert near Bridgeport WV 26330?
I'm about 1.5hrs away from Pittsburgh. A 2hour driving radius would be preferrable. I've got hot start problem, overboost (found that out when I sent boost log to Malone Tuning), and some suspension noise that needs to be looked at.

I have 99.5 5speed with 147k. I plan to keep my steed for a very looong time.:)

Trusted Mechanic in Houston, TX

We were in the middle of a road trip from AZ to Houston, TX when we noticed the front of our 2004 Passat TDI wagon was vibrating on acceleration, and much more than it had been. We suspected a failing CV joint. But where to find a mechanic? We checked "trusted mechanics" on this forum and found VDub Autohaus near Houston International Airport. Christian immediately put the car on a lift and showed us that a chinese replacement axle was failing. He gave us a loaner car, and our car was fixed within 5 hours. About 3 miles after leaving his shop w experienced the (new to us) limp mode. We returned to Christian's shop were he hooked up a computer to find what initiated limp mode, diagnosed and found the problem was a rip in the rubber elbow on the turbo boost hose (Not related to the axle repair). Again he ordered a part quickly (30 hrs), repaired it, and we were able to continue with our driving vacation.

It is good to know that Trusted Mechanics are available in many place, and that VDub Autohaus in Houston, TX is one of them.

My TDI mechanic recommendation

I would like to recommend John to be added to the TDI guru list.

John Andryszewski
JA Autowerks
193 Newman Springs Road
Shrewsbury, NJ 07701
(732) 268-7381
jaautowerks@gmail.com

John did lots of routine maintenance work on my TDI. He did full TB service, including a water pump with metal propeller. I also had full AC system maintenance performed, brake fluid flush, rotor/pad change, new tire install/ballance. John knows our TDIs and has all the tools needed (I did some looking around his shop).

He's on the list, but I don't know when he was added. Maybe tonight, maybe six months ago.

But additional recommendations are always welcome.

I recommended John and that must have been at least 2 years ago.

I have a kudos to post:
I took my car to Ray in Okla on the guru list for a second opinion on a $650 quote to replace the front left axle assembly to remedy the vibration under load problem. I took it to shop next to my work just to rule out unbalanced tires and they exaggerated how bad the vibration was such as 'it shook like crazy when braking and when going 80'- I never experienced that. He determined it was the right side that needed to be replaced. He saved me a lot of money! And no more vibration!

Shout Out to Trusted Mechanic in Georgia!

So, no father with 3 children, aged 6, 4, and 1, wants to get a call from their wife that their cross country road trip starting from Florida and ending in Colorado hit a snag somewhere in between. I got that call. My wife, frantically trying to figure what to do, told me that the car was spewing large amounts of black smoke, some of it was getting in the cabin, children were crying, so was she, and the car had absolutely no power to get up to speed. I told her to get off the nearest exit, and that I would try and fix it from there. So, step 1, determine where she was. Marrietta, GA. Check. Step 2, go straight to TDI trusted mechanics list, and pray and pray that someone there is close to where she is. Check. Step 3, pray that this person nearest her will answer the phone on my first call...check. Troy Sentz, aka TNTKNC, answered the phone on first call, and quickly heard what my issues where, and immediately made himself available to remedy the situation. It was Thursday last week, and he may have received the call somewhere around 4 pm. I don't know if he had to drop anything else he was doing, but he said he understood how grave my situation was, and that my car would have his full attention (I'm not sure, but he may have even taken leave from work on Friday to work on my car...haven't asked him). Step 4, call cab to get family to hotel, and get car towed to Troy's place. Check. Troy assessed the issue, kept me in the loop the whole time, sent pictures, and told me that camshaft, lifters where all in a bad way. I believed it. And, he also had the complete kit I needed. That was a wow. I trusted Troy's judgement on this matter, but being far away removed from them, and trying to resolve this from another state, I had no choice but to trust him. I read some of his posts, and could see he was a straight up guy as well from some of the advice he has offered others in the past. All in all, he got my wife on the road the next day by 1 pm. That is insanely good service. The car has since run like a champ. There have been no hiccups with the car, and am really thankful for TDICLUB for what a great resource of info it is, and am thankful that Troy got my family back on the road. My hats off to him. I commend him to others looking for work done on their car in Georgia.

Troy is a good guy.. I bought my first TDI from him back in 2005 when he lived up here by me.. I often forget he lives down there now.. I just drove through Georgia last week..

MrMopar does not own a TDI and does not partisipate in any discussion of TDI repair. I do not know any local gurus in the area.

The nearest independent shop (that I know of) that does TDI repair is Chubs Auto in Taylorville.

Unfortunately, Derek's shop suffered a fire a few months ago and I don't know he is open yet.

Stay away from Sud's for any repair other than warranty.

Hi ,Can any one please suggest for a trusted Mechanic in Normal/Bloomington IL .

Thanks

Not sure how to add someone to the trusted list. Just had the delete kit done on my 05 Passat. I live in Winnipeg MB Canada. It is very hard to find someone here in Winnipeg that even knows about the BSM problems with these cars. Jerome at Steel Brothers is the only person I've found that actually knows what he is talking about. If possible please add him to the list of trusted mechanics. He only works on VW so his focus is in the right place.

Took an hour & 20 minute drive out to M & M Auto Cycle in Montague, NJ to have TDI GURU Mike Hevner do a TB change on my TDI I just bought. Not only did he do the TB change, but he informed me of some other minor issues as well and took care of them all for a very, VERY reasonable price. The labor was done very meticulously and Mike and his mechanics were very straight forward and honest. As I said I drove an hour & 20 minutes to have work done...Mike told me about the surrounding area, where to kill time and even offered to drive me to go get breakfast and lunch. (was @ the shop right when it opened this am) So my words of advice to everyone out there is that if you are nearby or within a decent driving distance from Montague,NJ/Port Jervis, definitely take the trip and have Mike and his team work on your car. They are truly great. First experience and I'm already sold that he is going to be my mechanic for a long time...regardless of the drive...it's well worth it!

One of the worst overall experiences I have ever had.
Go here for specifics.
You still don't tell us who it is!! What are we supposed to do for you?

If you want a new system for trusted mechanics, start working on it. I'd love to see what you have in mind!

The system we have now is not perfect and nobody claims that it is. If you have a better idea, we would all love to hear it! Start a post in TDIClub Forum Help & Suggestions and I'm sure plenty of other users will join you in hashing out possible ideas.

The ideal format for the trusted mechanics list would be something like Yelp. Users post ratings and reviews, you can search the map for nearby mechanics, etc. Any programmers around here want to spend some time working in something like this? We've been needing it for a long time!!

Its pretty simple. Start a sticky thread with a list of hotlinks to different states. This would bring you to a list of mechanics in each state as a hotlink. Click on the mechanic and have a poll set up excellent through terrible rating. People could comment afterthought poll. Make the poll. Make the poll so that a specific user could comment more than once after a certain length of time. Just the beginning of an idea. I'm not going to sit here's and argue over this. My point is that people throw around the word guru and trusted mechanic too easily. A guy like HermTDI deserves to be on the list. My recent experience makes me realize that many people are probably getting inferior service compared to the type Ive always received from Herm. Again, it's easier for us to think that all the grass is green over here. I have pretty high standards when it comes to mechanical repairs an I like to do it right the first time. Maybe some of you guys have a different outlook on this than I.
At veedubtdi:
What are you going to "do for me" if I post the guys name? Releasing his name doesn't change the fact that the system needs to be changed in how people are rated. Right now it's set up like a miniature yellow pages. Pick and cross your fingers.

Polls don't work because you are locked in to your original vote FOREVER. That's just the way vBulletin works.

In the current setup, mechanics are added to the list based on positive reviews. Mechanics are removed from the list based on negative reviews. If you refuse to post a negative review, your guy will remain on the list!

Gurus and trusted mechanics ARE NOT the same thing. It sounds to me like you're expecting everyone on the trusted mechanics list to perform at the same level as Herm.
