None of the Bosch shops in AZ will touch the TDI injection pump but this place will. Probably worth adding to the list with a note that they are for injection pumps, not general mechanic work. I can never find the info when I need it

Hello fellow TDi'ers. Has anyone in the Pioneer Valley of Massachusetts been to Seven Sisters Auto? They are very close by, and I was recommended to them by a SVO Rabbit owner. (see story below). I'm fairly new to this whole TDI thing, and I'm fairly certain I'll need to change my timing belt soon. I would do it, but as an apartment dweller and grad-student I neither have the time, nor the place to do such a job. Anyway, any experience with them?


Now the story. (also posted in the other forum, but I figured it was appropriate here too)

So I was out at a local hardware store looking for the #20 Torx security bit for the MAF to take it apart after replacing it. As I walked out of the store, I heard the clatter of a diesel drive by. I saw the driver's head swivel to check out my car, and then he proceeded to park behind me. First thing he asks is the "whats your mileage" question. It turns out he was running SVO in his late model non-turbo Diesel for a while. We talked for a while, and he recommened Seven Sisters auto as they did his converstion to SVO a while back. I pointed him to the TDI site and we parted ways. That was my first experience as a TDIer getting stopped by someone out of the blue. I've seen a beige Golf TDI around here in Amherst, but that was before I knew about the site and the cards. NETHED, I imagine Chris Hill (mrchill) is the closest TDI guru to you. Other shops like Seven Sisters may be fine for some projects, but with timing belts you want someone who absolutely knows what he is doing.

They have been in the VW business, selling and repairing (only repairing now) since 1959. I have spoke to the owner (not Ed) about my 04 TDI Jetta and he will do the timing belt/water pump for a very reasonable price. He had 2 other TDI's that he was working on one getting a new turbo and one just towed in that wont start ( I mentioned relay 109 ) and he said thats first on the list.

I can do some work in the Pioneer Valley area. I haven't done a TDI timing belt yet, but I have done a 1.8T gasser TB, CV joint replacement, brakes, intake cleaning, injectors, glow plugs, clutch, and a bunch of other stuff I can't remember right now.

Does Ken have experience with TDI timing belts, both VE and PD? That is always the big question.

Mike Staley at BARTuning is a VW Audi specialist. He has done lots of work for me and I have always come away satisfied with his work.

The last major install he did for me was putting in my ERF 6 speed. My Eurojet will also be installed by him.

Mike is not the cheapest place to get work done (He is cheaper than the dealer) but he does the work right the first time.

When your there ask to see his 82 rabbit 1.9 TDI that is turned back to run 25lbs of boost. It absolutely flys.

Avoid School Street Garage, Acton, MA

Be careful not to go by the recomendations on the cartalk.com web site and trust School Street Garage in South Acton, MA. They put the top of my air filter box on crooked letting my engine inhale unfiltered air, dirt, leaves, etc. until I found it 2000 miles later. They also deny that they could have done this 2 months after the fact, so they are not prepared to learn from their mistakes. Why did I let someone else do something as elementary as changing the air filter? I had just bought the car ('98 Jetta) and it needed rear brakes and a fuel filter as well.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I recently relocated to Panama City Beach, FL where there are no VW shops other than the Stealership . My fuel injector pump is leaking so I talked to some mechanics at some local shops that were suggested to me but they had little to no experience with German cars and joked about German pumps saying they where weird . So I broadened my search and found a shop in Fort Walton Beach, FL called VW Specialty, Inc. I talked to him with all these details I found here on tdiclub.com and he was on the money, well as far as I am concerned he said all the right things. Apparently there is a shop in Pensacola that repairs pumps.

I dropped it off a couple of days ago; he has one service garage with a fenced lot. It is located in the middle of a trailer park. Pulling up I said no way until I saw what he was working on. About 6 new bugs, an Audi TT a VW phaeton, several newer Jettas and some Golfs, not to mention some way older stuff and several of these were TDIs. Another customer was there and mentioned to me that the Stealership hates this guy because he is taking their business. Oh well if the Stealership did good work at reasonable prices they would be my number one source.

I also mentioned that my wiper switch was busted he said he has a used one he is going to replace it with. He sent my pump to Pensacola to be rebuilt.

I will fill in the costs and other details when I have them all.

Michigan mechanic recommendation

I took my beloved '99 NB TDI to Marty (http://www.martinbergelllc.com) for a timing belt change, and I couldn't be happier. I bought the car in Feb '06, and first took it to a place in Ann Arbor to get it checked out and get the oil changed. They charged me an arm and a leg, and didn't do much at all.

I found Marty via this forum, and he did a wonderful job with the timing belt, but he also took the time to really check everything out, and found a few more things that needed to be taken care of. He fixed those - all at a very reasonable price in a timely fashion.

If you're in the Lansing/Detroit area, I HIGHLY recommend taking your TDI to Marty. There is nothing like finding a good, trusted mechanic!

Next, I'm going back to Marty to replace the EGR and get my bug chipped.

he is a factory trained Mercedes diesel mechanic, and has been working on diesels a very long time (my guess is over 25 years) they work on all types of cars tehre but he specilizes in vw and mercedes diesels.

He is good at finding the very weird problems as he has seen it all. he is the one who helped me though my engine rebuild. he did all the head work in house. yes he is also a machinist. I know he has pop test equipment as well. i've not found anyting he cant do.
he is not familiar with some of the 'mods' we like to do but once you explain it, he is good to go.

i woulnt be asking him to disable egr's etc as he is a licenced mechanic / inspection station. however he has never given me grief over my egr blockoff or elephant hose.

his work quality is excellent, for major work i trust him.

he is not a member here on the board so for example, id bring him a diesel geek kit or somting to to a tb change to get 100k parts, otherwise he would get the parts by the book.

He is down the road from me literaly, so if you find yourself going over there for some work then drop me a note and i'll stop over and say hi.

TDIJetta99 is already listed... it's how I found him, but I wanted to say that he's really excellent. Pulled and reinstalled my engine head, did timing belt, injectors, and some turbo repair. Some more details in my post about his repair.

I highly recommend him, he was well worth the two hour travel time for me.
