Alex has been extremely helpful. He has diagnosed and fixed a compression leak for me, cleaned my filthy injectors, sourced some parts, pop tested my new Bosios, did the install...the list goes on and on. The best part is that I ask a ton of questions, and he has taught me much regarding the TDIs. I definitely trust his judgement and ability under the hood of these cars. +1 for a top-notch TDI mechanic and trustworthy person.

Two thumbs up for Rob! Thanks for the great job on the timing belt. If anyone in the Austin area is looking to have work done contact Rob, you won't be disappointed.

hi jake - do you have any experience with burdick? i only recently moved to the syracuse area, and their part department seemed pretty sharp, but i was hoping to ask you what your experience has been. i am thinking about utilizing them for oil changes, etc. thanks.

In Syracuse, Ed Karpinsky has long been recommended. His garage is on Tipp Hill... Marcellus Street Garage (315) 475-7034 … 321 S Wilbur Ave.

Guys this list is awsome!
I noted Jeff's VW repair near Indy was entered back in 2006ish.
Any guidance on anyone else in Indy that you guys recommend?
I have a 2000 Jetta TDI that just started some concerning knocking that want to get checked out before it turns ugly. Any info appreciated.
Thanks all,
tgb

If your running SVO and it's knocking it's probably too late. You are doing OCI in the 2-3 K mile range right? Rod bearings don't like oil thats polymerized.

I think it should be noted that Zack at Springfield German Auto no longer has any repairs going on, he only sells parts. However, he gives top notch advice and he can get a hold of any products that TDI-Parts or whatever can, usually at the same or lower price (I bought Diesel Purge for $8 a can).

When he parted his business out the mechanics went and formed Edge Motor Sport, and Ron Gates Auto (and maybe some more). Ron Gates handles the TDI stuff, I have no idea how good he is though.

How far you should/need to travel will depend on what work needs to be performed.

If it's time for a new timing belt, or anything specific to the TDI engine like the injection system or turbo, then you might make arrangements with one of the guys from Sioux Falls or Rapid City, or even in the Twin Cities if you might be making a trip there anyways.

For brakes or suspension stuff, the electrical system, transmission, etc., then you do not need a TDI expert, just someone competent to work on German cars.

I think it is the case that TDI owners in places like South Dakota must become even more knowledgeable about their own cars than the ones who have reliable mechanics close by. So spend as much time as possible here at TDI Club, learn all you can about your car -- so that if you ever have to let a mechanic work on your car who does not have any TDI experience, you will be able to provide guidance in the troubleshooting.

If you go to a mechanic and say, I think I have a problem with the X or the Y, but I'm not sure which, most mechanics will be able to check those things. (You'll probably not be happy with any mechanic who refuses to listen to your ideas.)

OTOH, if you don't have any idea where the problem is, and the mechanic doesn't have any experience with our cars, then he might start replacing some perfectly good parts until he accidentally finds the problem. (Or maybe he never solves the problem -- but you might spend thousands before you give up on him.)

What kind repairs you need to get done? Was it you the one called me couple weeks ago with glow plug issues? I have my own shop now in Sioux Falls, so give me a call or PM me.

I'm very picky about my cars, but Kirk the owner is one of the few people I trust with my Car. He just did the BS and timing belt on my 05 passat and has done at least one other I know of. His prices are better than the dealer and He is a former VW/Audi mechanic. He also works on BMW and Mecades. High standard and easy to work with

Call he 632-0664.:)

TDI timing belt replacement via Rich Trembley

Rich is located in NH and just did my timing belt today. He used the complete kit with tensioners, serpentine belt, water pump, new hardware etc. I have worked on several different cars over the years but looked at this as something that would take me a considerable amount of time since I have never done one. Rich showed up on time, was a professional, did the job effeciently and at a very reasonable price. And no Rich is not my brother ha ha just someone who I have complete confidence in recommending to anyone looking for this or any other repairs on thier TDIs.

I guess you are referring to Rich Tremblay? (I suppose there are other guys named Rich in New Hampshire, though)

Here is one for San Diego People...

Euro Auto Service
157 S. Anderson Dr. "A"
Escondido, CA 92029
(760)746-9968

I went there to get my car inspected before purchase, the techs where very knowledgeable and when i asked questions they gave real answers and not dumbed down ones, while i was there 3 other diesel cars where being worked on and other owners seemed to like this shop.
It was family run and reasonable prices.

If I was in SD I would use them as my shop.

I am taking my car to Renner Motorsports on monday for some clutch work i will probe them on the TDIs and see what they know, might be another addition to the list.

I am going to guess that you meant to type "157 S Andreason Dr". Google Maps shows Euro Auto Service at that address, just off Auto Park Way.

This sounds like a great place for non-TDI-specific work like brakes, clutches, suspension stuff, AC compressors, electrical problems, etc. For TDI-specific stuff, I'd still recommend a TDI specialist -- and I still don't know of any in San Diego County.

yes you got the right address, some reason the invoice looked like Anderson to me (long day battling the hydraulic systems...).

Dieselyeti's response:
They closed a few years ago. That dealer became Miller Ford, and most recently Miller Nissan.

Could someone maybe update our list in post #1?
Thanks!

Lars, best to ask whether one of the Philadelphia-area "recommended shops" is better than the others. Plus, how convenient they are to "north of Philly" is known only to you.

They did a great job replacing both front wheel bearings on my car and I've heard good things about their timing belt service for TDI. A bit out of the way, but worth it.

What can't I say? Gerich has worked on my vehicle for the past 100,000 miles since news. REVO chip around 2500 miles, Unitronic chip at 33,000 miles, new clutch and flywheel around 35,000 miles, rear brakes and rotors at 35k miles (sticky caliper), and timing belt at 90k miles.

At the 90k mile service the engine had to be removed, I busted the infamous "dog ear" off my engine block, and a van gough from DieselGeek was modified to fit onto the vehicle and installed. Gerich did my belt on a stand, and enjoyed every minute of it. Since he's done his mother's BEW 04 Wagon and enjoyed repairing it.

Gerich's history has been with VWs since he could drive. His father has owned a variety of cars, both diesel and gas, and Gerich has grown up doing self-repair. His passion would be VR6 Corrados, and in my experience, Corrado owners have to be mechanically inclined to own the vehicle. He is ASE certified and worked for a large Ford dealer for several years before starting his own shop focusing on only VW/Audi vehicles.

I've been very happy, and feel they're a good one-stop shop for most anything you could need or want for your TDI. Stocking 505.01 approved oils and BRM oil/fuel filters, you'll be hard pressed to find an item the shop doesn't stock or cannot obtain for your TDI.

Sounds like a good shop but pulling the motor to install the alternate mount? Madness....seriously. I've done a dozen of them in the car. It's tight but it can be done easily enough with patience.
