If you are in the St. Louis, MO area, go to Pacific MO and see Brian at Rising Sun Automotive. He is the most knowledgeable person I know when it comes to VW.

He even knows about Peugeot! The first person that even knew they still make them. WOW!

Ditto on the Dallas mechanic. I just bought an '82 Jetta and am considering doing stuff myself, but would like a backup for if (more likely when) I break something.

Another vote for People's Auto in Somers, CT.

I brought my golf there due to the recommendations here for a bunch of small issues I've been having and a not so small issue with my brakes.

I left it there for a week while on vacation with a laundry list of items and asked that it be in condition to pass emissions and fix anythign else wrong before I get back.

They did an EXCELLENT job and the guys there were super friendly. They called me on my cell while I was on vacation (even honoring my request to not call before noon due to the time difference!) and told me what was going on. I got out the door for a repair bill that was 1/3 of what I was expecting.

They are definatly a VW specialist as I saw atleast 10 VW's, a few Audi's and MB's when I picked up my Golf.

I've been looking for someone in the New Orleans area to nearly no avail. When I find someone who claims to be a VW ace, I ask if they have a VagCom (half don't) and then ask about intake cleaning and TB change procedures. I've read enough here about these two maintenance procedures (considering each myself) to at least evaluate basic competancy based on their responses. I found someone who appears to know *** is going on in a TDI. Richard @ SACCO Imports in Gretna, LA. Price quotes are unreasonable though (TB ~ $1800 !!!?). Anyway, I wanted to at least mention it in this thread incase others are in a bind. I'm convinced that when the time comes, I'll drive 6-8 hours and find one of the recommended names for both TB and intake cleaning. Thanks for maintaining this thread!!

As long as you're willing to drive 6 to 8 hours, I'd recommend runonbeer in Austin.

I'd definitely drive 8 hours for a TB guru. Lucky for me rob is 3 hours away.

Just thought I'd say that Oldpoopie in Oregon is located in East Portland, 7 minutes from the Ross Island bridge. Could you update the original post to reflect that he is located here?

Justin changed out my timing belt and repositioned my tranny last night. We ran into some problems when a stripped out bolt hole was discovered in the auxillary belt tensioner. Amazingly, Justin and I went to the 24 hour auto parts store 4 times (they had a heli coil kit mis packaged), so we had to drill a new hole and do a bolt/nut combination for that.

Justin showed dogged determination and meticulously detailed work. He is amazing. No, I do not profit in any way from this...I'm just astounded. He truly is one of the Tdi Guru's!

Although I was pleased with my last timing belt job at Springfield German Auto, Justin is just amazing, charging $275 for labor. Parts were reasonable too (I think the TB kit was $250--ish for the complete 'deluxe' kit.) For comparision, last time at Springfield German Auto, my total bill for the same service was $795. That time, I purchased Diesel Geeks's deluxe TB kit.

Well worth the 2 hour drive from Eugene/Bend/The coast/Olympia. I cannot rave enough about his excellence of service and professionalism.

These guys are very competent, and continuously find issues with my TDIs that other places missed (loose bolts and stuff). They are Porsche mechanics, however, and charge accordingly, but their service is top notch and professional (I'd take my Porsche there if I had one). An oil change with Voll Sythese is $100, but they keep their eyes open while they're under there! And they're right by the Goose Hollow MAX stop.

...he is showing me how to do TBs so when I move to mIssissippi next week, I can hopefully help some tdiers down there. Jason is very thorough and knows his stuff. he cares for the car like it was his own. he wants the tdi to run forever, but knows it needs help to do it, and is not afraid to tell you.

I'll vouch for him. He's a long time TDI driver and with some practice and a solid place to work he'll be great for you guys. Heck, the NAVY trusted him to power subs for 6 years.....He's gone trough about 5 of them with me so he's getting it. Just takes some practice to get proficient. Beetles though....man they can take some time with all the stuff that comes out....

Kook (Erik) just got his 4th TB lesson and should be good to go with the tutorial in hand. He's going to order the tools soon and be in MS pretty soon. Give him a shout if you need one as I can say he'd be better than a blind, dumb, overcharging dealer. Oh, a couple of intakes too and a beatle thrown into the mix.

I was going to recommend Paramedick in Versailles KY, near Frankfort.

But you'd have to ask him if he is up to speed on PD engines. AFAIK they are not harder to work on, only different. Keep him in mind when your 2006 Jetta TDI is ready for a timing belt, or other out-of-warranty issues.

We use APTuning (www.aptuning.com) in Lebanon, PA. They have been pretty good to us. They did our chip, skid plate, big brakes, inspection and we will ask them for a muffler delete soon. I would trust them.
