In the interest of collecting more information here on TDIClub, I'm starting a poll about what transmission type our members have.

Please be sure to read the options carefully if you have more than one Passat! :)

If anyone in the know has any production figures for vehicles sold in the US or Canada regarding percentage of Manual vs. DSG transmissions that would be helpful - or at least interesting. I have heard numbers from VW dealership personnel like 10% or less have manual transmissions in the US but I have no way of verifying that.

My wife and I made a compromise when it was time to replace my B4 Passat (5 speed). She doesn't drive stick, so I agreed to get an automatic car (my first since the 1980's). If you are wondering what the other side of the compromise was, you obviously aren't married or haven't been for very long...

My previous Passat with a 2002 GLX with a 5 speed manual transmission. Prior to that I had a 97 Dodge Stratus with an automatic and prior to that I had a 1987 Dodge Omni with a 5 speed.

When I was shopping for my TDI, I just decided to get the auto/DSG option as I'm just kinda over shifting at this point. It's also easier for my wife to deal with (although she could drive the manual, she just preferred not having to think about it)...so she uses the car a lot more than she would have otherwise and gets the better mileage and keeps miles over her leased vehicle.

Manual.

My wife and I both wanted our next vehicle to be a manual, and we were forced to have an automatic with our van. As far as I know, the Passat is the only mid-sized in the North American market to still offer a manual transmission.

I find I have so much more control over the car this way.

In our van that does towing duty, I find myself often wishing for a manual, especially while towing, so that I can pick a lower gear instead of a higher gear the vehicle thinks it wants, or defer a shift if I see other factors that a vehicle simply can't see.

Nord, I think you may have selected the wrong option in the poll, as I recall you having three Passats. Let me know if you'd like me to change that for you.

While our Passat is the DSG, if the SEL Premium were offered with the manual in the U.S., that's what we'd be driving.

All turned back to VW. Now a 2017 Hundai Tuscon. Not a single squalk in 10k miles.

Got it! I'll update your entry to reflect three Passats - two manual and one DSG, the caveat being that your name will no longer show up in the poll results.

My wife and i kind of did the same thing. She previously had an audi S4 six speed and was kind of tired of the stickshift (i dont understand but whatever). I can say that for an automatic, i really enjoy and am impressed with the DSG although i would still have preferred a manual trans. It's her car though, i have my sports car and bike, this is our trip car and her daily driver.

nord - you have THREE!? You are officially my hero.

Have a 6-speed, if I got a 2nd I'd get a DSG just for the variety :)

Everyone bemoans that Europe manufacturers think we Americans can't drive sticks and so they don't offer a lot of manuals - or loaded manuals - here, and then you guys all support the stereotype and go and buy DSGs. :(

I'm so disappointed... :(

Mike It's not matter of can't. I have no problem with a manual. I grew up with them. I just don't want to. Can't and don't want to are two different issues. I would be disappointed if no automatic was available in a midsize family car.

Been very pleased with the DSG. It shifts faster than I do. It's great in traffic. Almost as efficient as a stick. I don't want to drive another transmission now.

If I'm I mood to drive a manual, I'll have to resort to a motorcycle.

Yes, my wife also let me get the car she selected, with DSG. Can't complain through for our anniversary I gave her an iPad 2 and she gave me a JSW TDI 6 speed manual. I think I will keep her. Hope she feels the same way about me.

I can't comment on previous manual Tdi's, but my '14 is the chunkiest feeling manual I've ever come across. I used to mostly be a mopar guy so my experience would be with neon's, Ram's and jeeps with manual transmissions. None of which had issues going into first or second when its cold like my '14 does.

Perhaps your shift linkage needs to be adjusted.

My 13 TDI is a DSG, it's phenomenal, and I though I wanted a manual, I'll get a manual when I get my Porsche / VW Premium ;)
Edit:
My new 14 TDI is also a DSG, now have 2 DSG's, it's still phenomenal.
