So I just bought a 04 Jetta Wagon TDI with an automatic transmission and it has a hitch installed should I add a transmission cooler like what you do for a truck or would the tranny temp be O.K. without.

The cooler is on top of the Trans and is coolant cooled. Not sure if there are any direct fit large replacement coolers available but I don't think so. . To get an additional radiator type cooler would take some custom work.

Yes, you can buy adapters to get rid of the stock, crappy cooler and run a proper aftermarket unit. Sonnax I believe makes them.

I believe your answering with a solution for the 01m. I haven't seen any adapters made for the 09A. Original poster should have a 09A trans.

I would ask the original poster... how heavy, how far, and how often do you plan on towing. I have a sailboat which is very light and only tow to the lake once a week at the most a few times during the summer. Plus I'm only towing 20-30 miles each way. Extra cooling just isn't always needed. Especially if you tow in "3" as your supposed to instead of "D". Yes you may need to slow down.

Good point but I don't think the 09A cooler is much better. Guess I"ll have to take the cooler off my 09A and see what fittings they use.

I towed a 5x10 trailer last year with my sedan, didn't monitor temps but it did ok. With the new wagon, going to put a cooler on as I plan on towing a bit this year.
