hey, for the guys who have done this, what type of wire/connectors did you use to connect the defeat switch and how much/many are needed?

my unit should be here this week, as well as the switch.

thanks again!

Ok, finally got around to doing this today. I followed everything I've read so far, installed the new mk60 pump. When I went to use vcds to activate the pump, it didn't have me do it multiple times like Ive read. I hit "go" and it ran the pump for a second or two, then it told me to open both front bleeders, then pump the brake 10 times, then close the bleeders. I hit next and it said "NA". After reading this post (http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=255349&highlight=abs+with+vagcom) I figured that once it said "NA", I was done.

At any rate, the brakes had decent pressure, and I was running out of daylight, so I decided to go ahead and pressure bleed the rears, doing the LR first, followed by RR. Its actually the first time I've bled these brakes and using my motive power bleeder. I filled the master cylinder, pumped the power bleeder to 14.5 psi, and opened the LR bleeder nut. Fluid came out, but no bubbles. I kept an eye on the master cylinder to make sure that it remained full during the procedure. Again, 5 mins or so and no bubbles, so I closed it and moved to the RR. Followed the same procedure for it, and again, some dirty fluid, but no bubbles. It was dark at this point so i put the tires back on, and went for a drive. I actually wasn't sure if I still needed to pressure bleed the front two - since I ran the pump with vcds and during that procedure I saw some small bubbles, but from what I could tell, there weren't many.

Brake pedal feel isn't as hard as before, and ASR definitely isn't active. I found some loose gravel and was able to spin the tires. I hooked up VAG and it recognizes the mk60 pump with ASR so I know that it is not the unit, also, the ABS works.

I guess I'm going to go ahead and try to bleed all 4 again tomorrow with the power bleeder. Maybe I'll try to run the pump through vcds again? I'm not really sure where to start to troubleshoot the issue.

I posted this here in case you guys are able to help - it might also help any other noob's who are attempting this retrofit.

*EDIT* - I rebled everything this morning, starting with the vag abs function. I didn't realize that vag would run the pump, and give the "NA" after the 10 sec pump run when it was done. I only had to run it 2 times total. Rebled the entire system. When I started the car, the (!) dash light came on for the first time! Went out and found some leaves and TADAAA! ASR works! Now on to the switch!

Thanks again guys!

Is this really as simple as replacing the ABS pump? Or am I missing something?

Question goes for both my '01 Golf and possibly my dad's '97 Passat.

I don't really care about the defeat switches.

Very very cool... definitely a post-tax season mod for me.

NB, I was hoping you'd have the write-up on your site, get to it! :p

apparently ":p" does not equal :p.

So does anyone have a big bunch of these pumps on the cheap? I'm gonna be needing a pair . . .

I found mine on vortex for $80 ($100 shipped) It came off a GTI that was rearended with 80k km's. It took me a couple of hours to install, and about an hr to install the defeat switch...

I've been following this thread for a while, and have a question.

I purchased the pump, switch and enough wire to add it to my dash. What I'm having a problem with is locating the proper ECM/ECU.

How have people with a 2002 been sourcing ECUs? My 2002 has a 2.0 gasser and manual trans, and I don't think ASR was actually offered for this engine/transmission combination. I know it was an option for the TDI, but from what I can see, not for the GL/2.0. Am I in trouble, or are there options out there for me? Can I use a 1.8T ECM?

(help me obi-wan kenobi)....

Thanks,

-t

ASR was never offered in the US market for TDI's either. For most of us, it was just a matter of hooking it up, and leaving the ECU as it was. I think it was only 2003(or maybe it was 02?) TDI's that had an issue with ASR and the stock ECU's. Might want to try checking over on vortex to see if people have done 2 liters before.

it was only '02 US market TDIs that have the issue. The solution is a Euro '02 program, or swap to an '03 ECU.

I'd imagine a similar fix could happen for a 2.sl0

It would be nice to know if the ECU supports it before hand. I suppose I could ask the dealer what does ECU p/n XYZ support. Who knows if they can give an answer.

Just wanted to make mention that ASR does work properly with a USA 99.5's EB computer. Got to test it last night when I got stuck in a snow drift

I have had the ASR since it was first found out it would work and have never had to use the defeat switch. IMHO it is a waste of time to hook it up as there is really no reason to turn the ASR off that I can find. When I find a ASR for the 03 I just bought I will not wire one in, just hook up the brake lines and use the VCDS to bleed the front brakes ( you don't need it to do the back) bleed the back and I will be done. No extra wires to run, time saved.

I am about to order the 1J0 614 417 D pump for my car. Looking on Car-Part I found several that are in my price range. One thing I am wandering about, does the controller come off of these pumps? One of the places I called asked if I was after the pump or the controller. I thought it was all one unit. Can someone please confirm this? Also, if they do come separate then which controller do I need for this pump? Part number would be best.

Hi,

Mine came as one complete assembly. One thing to be aware of though - make sure you get the mounting bracket that goes with it. :)

I haven't installed this in my 2002 yet, but I'm now contemplating selling it. The assembly that I purchased came with the various bolts, rubber insulators and bracket. Make sure you get those pieces.

Do no buy them if they are separated. They are suppose to be attached all the time. If someone had the hair brained scheme to remove the controller and sell it separately, walk away and find one else where.

That was the answer I needed. I figured they were supposed to be all one unit but I was not sure.

I have some extra money sitting in my papal account so I started searching for the pump I need for the 99.5. Found out a couple things:

1. MK20 pumps are much more rare than MK60 ones. MK60's are everywhere. I guess I could use a MK60 in the 04 PD, but I really want to do the 99.5 with ASR.

2.Not all the "long" pumps are ABS/EDL/ASR. I have seen at least one that had the extra length, but was a ABS/EDL pump only. So now to add even more complexity to a already complex search, I need the seller to post a pic of the bottom plate before I buy.

3. I posted a WTB on vortex and got 0 interest. PM'ed several members parting out cars and either they blow me off or the pump is wrong.

Is it really that hard to find someone parting out an early GTI or 1.8T/VR6 Jetta?
Nope, I've sold two here and installed one myself.

Speaking of which. I have another to sell. If anyone is interested.
