I was in the exact same situation as you two weeks ago last Sunday. Signed order, VIN number in hand. The dealer said "a few days" and I said "exactly what does that mean" and he said "real soon now" and I said "so worst case scenario, how long?" and he said "well one time it took a month but yours should be here this week, it's in Kent" (Washingon, which he claimed to be the distribution point, which turned out to be a lie)
Few days later, called again.. still no car. "probably by the end of the week". Sure.
Sunday rolls around again.. call the dealer again. "oh it got "sent back", it will be another week". Me: "sent back to WHERE exactly??" them: "where it was coming from" me:"and where was that??" them:"I'm not sure"
Meanwhile, I visit another dealer, trying to get them to screw the original dealer by giving me a better deal (21k for an 01 Golf GLS TDI with lux, CWP and Monsoon). This dealer looks up the VIN and says that the orignal dealer had lied to me (no surprise) and the car was a month out(which as it turns out was also a lie, again no surprise). He also says that there is no other car remotely like the one I want available at this time. Sigh.
Meanwhile, my friend wants to by my old car, but he has to sell his old car first, and he doesn't want to go forward with that until he can actually take posession of my old car, which won't happen until my new car arrives. It's now Sunday again, two weeks since we made the deal. To break the logjam, I call the dealer and say "i've sold my car, I need something to drive NOW". They give me an 00 Mitsubishi Montero Sport! About the last loaner car I was expecting, and about as far from a Golf TDI as you can get. Nice ride though.
On Tuesday my car arrived. Between sunday and tuesday I managed to put 640 miles and about an hour of offroad hill climbing on the Montero. =)
So in this case, a few days meant 16 days. The car is dandy though, so far the only problem is an overzealous front-right seatbelt retractor lock.
And to answer your question, throughout this debacle I was told repeatedly by the dealer that they really truely didn't know when the car was going to arrive. I didn't believe them either, but from everything I've been able to learn in the meanwhile, it seems to be true.
