Tough Shiftin\' HEY ANYONE OUT THERE????

98 Jetta TDI / 5 speed, with 153,000 beautiful low maintenance miles. The 5 speed has been tough to get into 1st or 2nd lately. Is this typically a shifter bushing thing?
Also, I read about a short shifter setup (say that 3 times fast). Has anyone had experience in changing from stock to short shift, that can rate it in a scale of difficulty? Thanks / Ho

Most likely clutch presure plate fatique. I've noticed the same thing on mine. I've re-adjusted all my linkage and its still there. Sometimes its stiff and other times it shifts fine, which leads me to belive it is indeed my pressure plate going.

I sure hope you are right, but it sounds very plausible. For me, first gear is tough to get into when cold, and second almost feels like it is just about to grind the gear (can feel the gear in the shift stick). I am due for a clutch some time in the next few months anyhow, so when I upgrade to the VR6, I am going to get a release bearing anyhow.
