RE original post, I looked at and drove the JGC diesel before I got my Touareg. I liked the drive. My concern was a # of posts about problems with the Jeep's transmission. So far, after 1 year, no problems with my Touareg TDI sport. Best car I've owned.

It won't be called the Tiguan - that is already in use on the SUV below the Touareg.

Other countries have had the Amarok for several years. It has a 2.0 diesel and even in the automatic model, it goes well.

Not sure. I did read a week of so ago that when this comes out of Tennessee it might be called Tiguan. Rumors are stating the 3rd row seating would be an option, so with two rows there should be significant cargo space.

And I agree that VW makes a 2L diesel that would be just fine. Might be a reason to justify the higher powered one Europe already has, and once the engine is certified perhaps the GTD will make it here as well? :p

And indeed it "would be just fine". However one competitor, MB has the 2.1 L TT making 369 # ft. mated to a 7 speed A/T. One CUV that it is in, weighs app 4,300 #'s.

So what were the costs?
The battery I bought rebuilt by Falcon Re-builders in New Jersey for $1450 and 262 for two way shipping. The Core was $400.00 refundable and I just put it UPS for the trip back.
The total with freight for the battery was $ 1712.
This puts the total I have spent on unscheduled maintenance in the 190,000 miles about $1900.00 for the battery, 150 for an inverter water pump and serpentine belt and a set of spark plugs. It works out to about $0.01 per mile for unscheduled maintenance expense over 13 years.
Not bad for moving from A to B, but not flashy or sexy.

Touareg is sitting on the Cayenne chassis and comes with great brakes already OEM, hear and written that they are non labeled brembo brakes, love the T-reg!! test drove Porsche Cayenne, BMW X5, Audi Q5, Lexus RX350, Toyota Highlander and 4Runner, and for a higher up/ more luxury, the Touareg 2013 TDI i got was the best out of them and price, value and quality too!! especially because 2013 T-Reg and Golf are still made in Germany! and Cayenne couldn't afford haha!

Touareg vehicles and Cayenne bodies are produced at the VW plant in Bratislava, Slovakia

hi there, no they are assembled in Bratislava, Slovakia only, main production of parts all in Germany, but was just merely pointing out that I can see the difference in quality of the European products versus South American...

Um...... the drivetrain is about 30% of the value of the vehicle. The main construction of the vehicle is in Bratislava. I am not sure n this case but many VW/Audi engines are produced in Hungary. The transmission for this vehicle, by the way, is Japanese.

Late to the party (as usual) but a few comments:
My '11 Touareg now has about 83K and is going strong.
Consumer Reports has listed the current V6 version as having "average" reliability.
If you read what qualified as reliable in the "good old days", you can see that cars, in spite of their complexity, have gotten more reliable.
As a certifiable Medicare eligible old-guy, I have countless horror stories about the cars from back in the good old days (when reaching 100K miles was pretty much the upper limit).
I have an '05 Prius also, with about 100K. You can see which one I prefer to drive. Also have a Volt which falls between the two. It is so much quieter than the buzzy little Prius.
Maintenance costs in my Touareg haven't been excessive. Wear items, like tires, naturally wear out. If that's a problem order them from Tire Rack and save some bucks over the dealer. And add you own AdBlu purchased from PepBoys, it's much cheaper than the VW stuff.
The car is a joy to drive and, so far, has been quite reasonable to maintain.
