Tomorrow is Christmas! Going to pick up our new JSW! (Updated with pictures!)

So, my husband and I had sadly come to the conclusion that it would probably be months before we got our hands on the JSW TDI we've been obsessing over. Then, over lunch today I did a random autotrader search and found our perfect car sitting on a lot in Wisconsin! We signed a contract and it is ready to come home with us tomorrow :D

It's only a little over 5 hours away, so we rented a car tonight (one way) and will be leaving first thing in the morning to go pick it up.

It is a salsa red manual TDI, cornsilk interior, with pano, rear side airbags and 17" porto wheels. And that is a really hard mix of options to locate! Wish it had the MDI/Ipod option but I think we can work around it.

I don't know if I'm going to be able to sleep tonight I'm so excited!

My husband wanted the black interior too and I agree that it does look really nice, but I have bad memories of his all black exterior/interior Integra a decade ago. So hot in the summer and it showed every bit of dirt. Plus, we travel with our three mutts a lot so i think the cornsilk color will do a better job of hiding stray dog hairs. I like the two-tone look with the black on the dash and top of the door interiors too.

Is the adapter kit you're referring to the $400 one here? I'm not sure it's worth that much to us. I'm not really sure we need it actually. I think we may have enough functionality with our iphones(3gs) and the bluetooth. But I think we need to mess around with it for a few weeks to see if we are happy with the performance. I'd be happy to hear about others' experiences here.

Oh, and congrats on your order ibid, sorry you have to wait. We love the Golf, and would prolly have gotten it if we didn't need the extra cargo room for all of our camping/animals/home improvement hauling around.

Ok, I'm actually going to try and go to sleep now. Alarm goes off at 5!

X2. Same reasons we ordered Cornsilk in ours. :)
Another big improvement over that butterscotch nightmare beige in the '09s is Cornsilk has black carpet. Complaints about the beige carpet in the previous models is fairly common.

So the black shows every little bit of dirt.

So the beige is supposed to be better. But people complain about the beige carpet. So the new '09's with cornslik have black carpet. And this is apprently better.

I'm confused.

It does sound weird right? The way I see it, the carpet is going to get dirty no matter what because everyone tracks in mud and dirt on their feet. So having it be darker helps hide grime, and since it's at your feet it's less noticeable.

The seats are a different matter to me, I'm not so worried about mud and grime, no feet go up on the seats! We do tend to get sand, bits of paper, and especially dog hair and even my own stupid blond hair stuck in seat creases and it just stands out more on black. I know I will have to clean the seats if mud does get on them, but I think I would do that no matter what color.

I guess it's just about the color of your particular "dirt" and how you want to camouflage it :p

Almost on the road!

Been on the road for a little bit now, amazing sunrise with the typical gorgeous Indiana fall color so it has been fun so far.
Ironically, we just drove by the Subaru plant in Lafayette and had to stick our tongues out at them. Our current vehicle is a 2002 Forester. It was the perfect size and I loved the AWD in winter, but we had all kinds of reliability issues and service problems. We aren't naive about VW's reliabilty record but we expected more from a company with one of the highest reliabilty ratings. And we got pretty bad mileage. The only way I would have been willing to buy another one was if they brought the diesel to the US. Rumors kept us waiting for over a year, but then we test drove the JSW and the manual Jetta. (haven't actually gotten to try a manual JSW yet!) We decided to give up on Subaru.

Since our JSW TDI will be the wife's car, and she isn't necessarily the VW diehard that I am, we did make an honest attempt to consider other makes/models before ordering ours, including a couple of Subarus. Agree, wasn't impressed with their mpg either.

In general I was pretty disappointed that in these days after $4/gal gas and everyone preaching about foreign oil dependance and carbon footprints, that mpg figures still aren't any better than what they are.
Bottom line, there simply wasn't anything out there with the same cargo capacity of a JSW TDI that gets any better than about 28 mpg highway on a 4-cyl.
(Subsequent to ordering the JSW, Chevy announced the improved '10 Equinox with 22/32, but that still doesn't compare to 30/41 ;). Would have to be a LOT better for me to change my vote for a JSW TDI :D )

Congrats and enjoy! This is our first TDI and first VW in 30 yrs. We kind of fell into ours like you did. We have a grin everytime we (I) drive it. The black and tan interior is really sharp and the cornsilk does match our golden retriever.

There are little grab handles in the headliner that will help avoid that.
Funny! Though we call them "oh sh**" handles around here ;) and they look pretty in the cornsilk color too.
I just finished my first real turn at driving our new baby. Only stalled it once, which is better than I expected and mostly due to nerves- not the car. It is so smooth and so much fun. I could not stop grinning the entire time. Between our goofy happy expressions and our odd "break-in" driving techniques, I'm pretty sure other travelers on the road think we are lunatics. If we had driven this route with our forester, we would have had to fill up about 65 miles back. The car reports that we still have 300 miles until fillup. Amazing.
We are already planning on what we want to do first, including tinting and clear film on the hood, and many other fun things for which this forum will be an invaluable tool for research! I appreciate all the comments from fellow tdi owners - thanks for being so welcoming!

We should be home in an hour, pictures to follow within a day!

Finally got pictures loaded to our computer. Meet our new car....

17" Porto wheels with splash guards. Wouldn't have gotten these if we had ordered one, but now we are kinda in love with them :p

Cornsilk Interior

Love this roof!

Final approval? All three dogs fit in cargo area with room to spare! (Had to use a blanket until we get our rubber mats and rear door protector)

Question to anyone with a JSW: What parts of this car above the 'beltline' (the glass area and up) is fabric-covered, and what is hard plastic?

The reason I ask is that I have a 2000 Golf with the light beige interior. I love it, because it makes the car feel lighter and roomier than a black interior. I like driving with the windows down, and occasionally with the sunroof open. The problem is that there are so many fuzzy parts in my car that they pick up a lot of dust from the air with the windows open. Even the rubber weatherstrip around the interior of the doors are fabric-covered. All of this stuff -- the fuzzy seals, the fabric covered pillar trim, the headliner -- picks up dust, and I have to vacuum the roof when I clean the car. And some of it doesn't come out, so it starts to look dingy.

So have they gone with basic plastic pillar trim, like most cars? Is the headliner fabric fuzzy, or more of a flat-woven cloth? Just curious...

I really love that cornsilk. Classy!

Wow, that is one sweet looking machine, I hadn't seen a red one yet, I think it's a very close race as to whether I personally like the black, or red better....

Congrats!!
I'm getting the clear bra and window tinting done on mine this week...it's going to look nice, we're going to go for the blackout look eventually....

Awesome pics!!

looks really nice.. only photo missing is the back side with the hatch closed!

I'm still 2-3 months away from my 2-door golf TDI :( ...but my 17 pound dog will love the cloth front seat... so I just have no need for the wagon like you do!

More pictures and a new tint job!

I can't believe I've had this car for a week already!

frugality-
Yep the 2010 still has the fabric lined roof and it extends down the top of pillars to cover the airbag compartments. It does concern me that it will get a little dingy (especially around the sunroof opening) it doesn't seem like it will get fuzzy. Our forester had a felt-like ceiling and it pilled up and got pretty fuzzy, the JSW doesn't look like it will be that bad. Here's some close up pix of the fabric:

Sunroof interior edge:

Upper (fabric) and lower pillar (hard plastic):

Closeup of fabric:

ibid- Here's a pic of the back with hatch down

Oh, and here's our before and after tint "makeover" that we got done today.
Here it was sitting outside the tint shop this morning:

And now back home in the driveway with 35% tint all the way around (obviously not on front, or sunroof). She's so purty! :p

Finally, I wanted to share an element I haven't read much about on this car. Nighttime ambience. Yes, I'm a girl and this is mostly just an aesthetic thing. But this car is smoking hot at night. There are two red LEDs in front of the sunroof that make the instrument panel lightly glow red at night and all the dials are done in a way that make them easy to read but not so bright that it distracts you at night. We do a lot of highway driving in the evening, and we were constantly fighting a battle with our forester over lights being too bright/too dim as the sun sets. The JSW handles this perfectly and it is just plain nice design. Of course, I think it works especially well with the salsa red exterior  Honestly, I think it looks classier than my dad's caddy at night. It is hard to photograph this in a way to get my point across, but here's my attempts:

Jettawolfs98- if you have something in particular you want to see in an interior shot and I'll get one for ya!

Thanks for all the congrats! It's nice to hear it from people who actually know why the car is special. No one we know really understands why we were so excited when we were able to find this baby!

Looks nice! The 35% tint goes very well with the black roof rails. Drove a 2010 DSG tdi wagon today and i was very impressed. Enjoy!

I noticed the red lights last night. Very nice touch. You don't have to be a girl to appreciate aesthetics.

I also love the new white dash lights. I was so upset when I read about the blue lights going away, but VW did good with the dash.
